§17#117.
17.
Hippocrates to Damagetus, greeting.
This is that very thing, Damagetus, which we were conjecturing: Democritus was not out of his mind, but was contemplating all things with supreme detachment, and he was bringing us to our senses, and through us, all of mankind.
And I have sent to you, my dear friend, what is truly the Asclepiadean ship, to which add, along with the sea, "health" as its emblem, since by divine guidance it has indeed run under sail and sailed into Abdera on the very day on which I had sent word to them that I would arrive.
Therefore we found everyone gathered before the gates, as was natural, waiting for us—not only men, but also women, and moreover old men and children, by the gods, downcast, even the infants.
And they indeed were in this state because of Democritus being mad, while he at that time was philosophizing with supreme precision.
When they saw me, they seemed to have come to themselves a little, and they conceived good hopes.
Philopoemen was eager to lead me to his guest-house, and that seemed good to them as well.
But I said, "Abderites, there is nothing more pressing for me than to see Democritus." Hearing this, they praised and were pleased, and they led me quickly through the marketplace, some following, others running ahead from different directions, saying, "Save him, help, cure him!" And I exhorted them to take courage, saying that perhaps there was nothing wrong, relying on the season of the Etesian winds, and if indeed there was some slight thing, it would be easily corrected; and while saying these things, I went along, for the house was not far, or rather, not even the whole city.
We arrived, for it happened to be near the wall, and they led me up quietly.
Then behind the tower there was a certain high hill, shaded by tall and thick poplars; from there the dwelling of Democritus could be seen, and Democritus himself was sitting under a certain leafy and very low plane tree, in a thick tunic, alone, unanointed, on a stone seat, very pale and thin, with his beard overgrown.
Beside him on the right, a trickling stream of water, running gently down the slope of the hill, murmured quietly.
There was a certain sacred precinct above that hill, as one might conjecture in suspicion, dedicated to the nymphs, covered with wild-growing vines.
He held a book on his knees in great orderliness, and some other books lay beside him on both sides, and there was also a pile of many animals dissected through and through.
At one moment he wrote intensely, bending over, and at another moment he remained quiet for a very long time, pausing and pondering within himself; then after a short while, while doing these things, he stood up and walked about, inspecting the entrails of the animals, and putting them down, he went back and sat down again.
The Abderites, standing around me, downcast and with their faces not far from tears, said, "Do you see the life of Democritus, Hippocrates, how he is mad, and knows neither what he wants nor what he does?" And one of them, wishing to show his madness even more, wailed shrilly like a woman mourning over the death of her child, and then another cried out in turn, imitating a traveler who had lost something he was carrying; and Democritus, listening, now smiled, now laughed aloud, and no longer wrote anything, but shook his head frequently.
But I said, "Abderites, you remain here, and I myself, getting closer to both the words and person of the man, and having seen and heard him, will know the truth of his condition." Having said this, I began to go down quietly.
That place was steep and slippery; with difficulty, therefore, supporting myself, I made my way through.
And as I drew near, it happened that when I came upon him, he was writing something enthusiastically and with great impulse.
Εἱστήκειν οὖν αὐτόθι περιμένων αὐτέου τὸν καιρὸν τῆς ἀναπαύσιος· ὁ δὲ μετὰ σμικρὸν τῆς φορῆς λήξας τοῦ γραφίου ἀνέβλεψέ τε ἐς ἐμὲ προσιόντα καὶ φησὶ, χαῖρε, ξένε. Κᾀγὼ, πολλά γε καὶ σὺ, Δημόκριτε, ἀνδρῶν σοφώτατε. Ὁ δὲ αἰδεσθεὶς, οἶμαι, ὅτι οὐκ ὀνομαστὶ προσεῖπέ με, σὲ δὲ, ἔφη, τί καλέομεν;
I stood there, therefore, waiting for his moment of rest; and after a little while, having ceased the movement of his pen, he looked up at me approaching and said, "Greetings, stranger." And I said, "Many greetings to you as well, Democritus, wisest of men." But he, being ashamed, I think, because he did not address me by name, said, "And what shall we call you?
For ignorance of your name was the excuse for the address of 'stranger'." "Hippocrates," I said, "is my name, the physician." And he said, "The nobility of the Asclepiadae and the great fame of your wisdom in medicine has traveled far and has reached even us.
Τί δὲ χρέος, ἑταῖρε, δεῦρό σε ἤγαγε;
What business, friend, has brought you here?"
