Αἱ ὄψιες αἱ διεφθαρμέναι, αὐτόματοι μὲν κυανίτιδες γιγνόμεναι, ἐξαπίνης γίνονται, καὶ ἐπειδὰν γένωνται, οὐκ ἔστιν ἴησις τοιαύτη.
Ruined visions, when they spontaneously become dark-blue, occur suddenly, and when they have occurred, there is no such cure.
Αἱ δὲ θαλασσοειδέες γιγνόμεναι, κατὰ μικρὸν ἐν πολλῷ χρόνῳ διαφθείρονται, καὶ πολλάκις ὁ ἕτερος ὀφθαλμὸς ἐν πολλῷ χρόνῳ ὕστερον διεφθάρη.
But those that become sea-green are destroyed gradually over a long time, and often the other eye is destroyed a long time afterwards.
Τουτέου δὲ χρὴ καθαίρειν τὴν κεφαλὴν καὶ καίειν τὰς φλέβας· κἢν ἀρχόμενος θεραπευθῇ ταῦτα, ἵσταται τὸ κακὸν καὶ οὐ χωρέει ἐπὶ τὸ φαυλότερον.
For this, one must purge the head and cauterize the veins; and if these things are treated at the beginning, the evil stops and does not proceed to a worse state.
Αἱ δὲ μεταξὺ τῆς τε κυανίτιδος καὶ τῆς θαλασσοειδοῦς, ἢν μὲν νέῳ ἐόντι γένωνται, πρεσβυτέρῳ γενομένῳ καθίστανται· ἢν δὲ πρεσβυτέρῳ ἐόντι γίγνωνται ἐτέων ἑπτὰ,. . . . βέλτιον ὁρῇ· τὰ μεγάλα δὲ πάνυ καὶ λαμπρὰ, καὶ ἀπὸ πρόσθεν, ὁρῇ μὲν, σαφῶς δὲ οὐ, καὶ ὅτι ἂν πάνυ πρὸς ἑωυτὸν τὸν ὀφθαλμὸν προσθῇ, καὶ τοῦτο, ἄλλο δὲ οὐδέν.
As for those between the dark-blue and the sea-green, if they occur when one is young, they are restored when he becomes older; but if they occur when one is older, for seven years,.... he sees better; yet very large and bright objects, and those in front, he indeed sees, but not clearly, and whatever he brings very close to his own eye, this also [he sees], but nothing else.
Ξυμφέρει δὲ τουτέῳ κάθαρσίς τε καὶ καῦσις τῆς κεφαλῆς· αἷμα δὲ τουτέοισιν οὐ ξυμφέρει ἀφιέναι, οὔτε τῇ κυανίτιδι, οὔτε τῇ θαλασσοειδεῖ.
It is beneficial for this patient to have purging and cauterization of the head; but to let blood is not beneficial for these patients, neither in the dark-blue nor in the sea-green.\n\n2.
§22. Καὶ τὸ ὄμμα ἐν τοῖσιν ὀφθαλμοῖσι, τῆς ὄψιος ὑγιέος οὔσης τῶν νεωτέρων ἀνθρώπων, ἤν τε θήλεια ᾖ ἤν τ’ ἄρσην, οὐκ ἂν ὠφελείης ποιέων οὐθὲν, ἕως ἂν αὔξηται τὸ σῶμα ἔτι.
And as for the pupil in the eyes, when the vision is healthy in younger people, whether female or male, you would do no good by treating it, as long as the body is still growing.
Ὅταν δὲ μηκέτι αὐξάνηται, αὐτέῳ τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ σκεψάμενος τὰ βλέφαρα λεπτύνειν, ξύων, ἢν δοκέῃ προσδέεσθαι, καὶ ἐπικαίων ἔνδοθεν μὴ διαφανέσιν.
But when it no longer grows, after examining the eye itself, one should thin the eyelids, by scraping them, if it seems to be necessary, and by cauterizing them from within with cauteries that do not penetrate.\n\n3.....
§33. . . . . Ἔπειτα ἀναδήσας, τὰ σκέλεα ἐκτείνας, δίφρον ὑποθεὶς ἀφ’ οὗ στηρίζηται τῇσι χερσί· μέσον δέ τις ἐχέτω.
Then having bound him, having stretched out the legs, having placed a stool underneath from which he may support himself with his hands; and let someone hold him by the middle.
Ἔπειτα διασημήνασθαι τὰς νωτιαίας φλέβας, σκοπεῖν δὲ ὄπισθεν.
Then, one must mark the veins of the back, and examine them from behind.
Ἔπειτα καίειν παχέσι σιδηρίοισι καὶ ἡσυχίῃ διαθερμαίνειν, ὅκως ἂν μὴ ῥαγῇ αἷμα καίοντι· προαφιέναι δὲ τοῦ αἵματος, ἢν δοκέῃ καιρὸς εἶναι.
Then cauterize with thick irons and heat gently, so that blood may not burst out during the cauterization; and let some blood flow beforehand, if it seems to be the right time.
Καίειν δὲ πρὸς τὸ ὀστέον ὄπισθεν.
Cauterize down to the bone from behind.
Ἔπειτα ἐνθεὶς σπόγγον ἠλαιωμένον ἐγκατακαίειν, πλὴν τοῦ πάνυ πρὸς αὐτῷ τῷ ὀστέῳ· ἢν δὲ προσδέχηται τῷ καυστηρίῳ τὸ σπόγγιον, ἕτερον λιπαρώτερον ἐνθεὶς ἐγκατακαίειν.
Then, having inserted an oiled sponge, cauterize deep within, except for the part very close to the bone itself; and if the sponge is affected by the cautery, insert another more oily one and cauterize inside.
Ἔπειτα τοῦ ἄρου ἐν μέλιτι δεύων, ἐντιθέναι τῇσιν ἐσχάρῃσιν.
Then, dipping some arum in honey, apply it to the eschars.
Ὅταν δὲ φλέβα παρακαύσῃς ἢ διακαύσῃς, ἐπειδὰν ἐκπέσῃ ἐσχάρη, ὁμοίως τέταται ἡ φλὲψ καὶ πεφύσηται καὶ πλήρης φαίνεται, καὶ σφύζει ὅτε κάτωθεν τὸ ἐπιῤῥέον· ἢν δὲ διακεκαυμένος ᾖ ὁ κάτωθεν, ταῦτα πάντα ἧσσον πάσχει.
When you cauterize a vein along the side or through, after the eschar falls off, the vein is stretched in the same way, and is swollen and appears full, and it throbs when that which flows from below [presses]; but if the lower part has been completely cauterized, it suffers all these things less.
Διακαίειν δὲ χρὴ αὖθις, ἢν μὴ τὸ πρῶτον διακαύσῃς· τά τε σπόγγια χρὴ ἰσχυρῶς ἐγκατακαίειν, πρὸς τῆς ῥεούσης φλεβὸς μᾶλλον.
One must cauterize through again, if you do not cauterize through at first; and one must cauterize the sponges strongly inside, rather on the side of the flowing vein.
Αἱ ἐσχάραι αἱ μᾶλλον ὀπτηθεῖσαι τάχει ἐκπίπτουσιν.
The eschars that are more thoroughly burnt fall off more quickly.
Αἱ καιόμεναι οὖλαι πρὸς τὸ ὀστέον καλλίονες γίνονται.
The scars burnt down to the bone become better.
Ἐπειδὰν δὲ τὰ ἕλκεα ὑγιέα γίνονται, αὖθις ἀναφυσῶνται καὶ ἐπαίρονται, καὶ ἐρυθραί εἰσι παρὰ τὸ ἄλλο, καὶ ὥσπερ ἀναιρησόμεναι φαίνονται, ἕως ἂν χρόνος ἐπιγένηται· καὶ κεφαλῆς καυθείσης καὶ στήθεος, ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ παντὶ τῷ σώματι ὅκου ἂν καυθῇ.
When the wounds become healthy, they swell up again and are raised, and they are red compared to the rest, and they look as if they are going to break out, until time passes; and this is the case whether the head or chest is cauterized, and likewise on the whole body wherever it may be cauterized.
