Conception Advice and Treatments for Miscarriage and Pyometra

Passage 4 of 7 · Greek

Summary

This section explains the precautions during intercourse to promote conception, the uterine dilation treatment for habitual miscarriages occurring repeatedly at specific months, and the drainage treatment using a probe along with oral remedies made from insects for uterine suppuration.

§2626.
26.
When it seems to be in a good state and she must go to her husband, let the woman be fasting, and let the man be sober, having bathed in cold water and having eaten suitable food; and if she knows that she has conceived the seed, let her not go to her husband during the first period, but let her remain quiet.
And she will know it thus: if the man says that he has emitted, but the woman, because of dryness, does not perceive it; but if the womb gives back the seed again into the private parts and she becomes wet, let her couple again until she conceives.
§2727.
27.
If a woman conceives indeed, but miscarries children at exactly two months, precisely at the same time and neither sooner nor later, and suffers this twice or thrice in the same way, or if she miscarries after a longer time, whether at three months or four months or longer, in this same manner, in these women the womb does not increase to a larger size, while the child is growing and exceeding the limit of two months or three months or of whatever age it may be; but while the child grows, the womb is no longer sufficient, and on this account miscarriage occurs at the same time.
For this woman, one must wash out the womb and dilate it as much as possible with the following applied remedies: having pounded the marrow of the gourd and sifted it, then mix it in boiled honey, the honey being slightly more, and a little silphium; and let the honey be well boiled; smear this around a probe, making its thickness as much as the cervix will admit; then apply it to the mouth of the womb and push it so that it passes into the inside of the womb; and when the remedy has melted, remove the probe.
And apply elaterium in this way, and wild colocynth likewise.
And let her eat during this time as much garlic as possible, and the stalk of silphium, and whatever produces wind in the belly.
And let the application be applied every third day, until it seems to be in a good state, and as much quantity as it admits; and on the intermediate days use softening remedies.
When the mouth of the womb is settled by the softening remedies, having waited after the menses have appeared, let her couple when she is already dry.
§2828.
28.
In any woman whose womb becomes purulent, either after childbirth or from miscarriage or in some other way, and the pus is not in another vessel and membrane as in an abscess, it is beneficial to introduce a lubricated probe into the mouth of the womb; for she will have less need of washing out if the pus should come out along the probe; then having collected caterpillars from spurge, which indeed have prickles, cut them gently so that the juice does not run out; then dry them in the sun and pound them; and likewise dry the dung-beetles in the sun, then pound them; and mix two Aeginetan obols by weight of the caterpillar, and double of the beetles, and a little anise, or some of such kind; for it becomes foul-smelling; and having pounded these smooth, dissolve them in sweet-smelling white wine; and when she drinks it, heaviness occurs and numbness falls upon her belly; if therefore this occurs, let her drink a little hydromel after it.

Notes

  1. §26γνώσεται δὲ ἢν μὲν ὁ ἀνὴρ φῇ ἀφιέναι, ἡ δὲ γυνὴ ἀγνοῇ ὑπὸ ξηρότητος — Following the main verb γνώσεται ("she will know"), a complex conditional structure starting with ἢν μὲν ... ἡ δὲ ... describes the conditions for determining whether conception has occurred. The object of the verb ἀγνοῇ ("does not perceive/is unaware") is contextually the semen emitted by the husband. The woman's lack of awareness of any seminal discharge due to dryness (ὑπὸ ξηρότητος) is interpreted as a sign that the womb has retained the seed (conceived).
  2. §27τοῦ παιδίου αὐξανομένου καὶ ὑπερβάλλοντος ἐκ τοῦ διμήνου ἢ τριμήνου ἢ ὁπηλίκου δήποτ’ οὖν — This is a genitive absolute construction with τοῦ παιδίου acting as the logical subject of the participles αὐξανομένου καὶ ὑπερβάλλοντος. It describes a temporal and causal circumstance where, as the fetus grows and exceeds the limit of two, three, or however many months, the womb (as stated in the main clause αἱ μῆτραι οὐκ ἐπιδιδόασιν ἐπὶ τὸ μέζον) fails to expand accordingly, leading to miscarriage.
  3. §28καὶ μὴ ἐν τεύχει ἑτέρῳ καὶ χιτῶνι τὸ πῦον ὥσπερ ἐπὶ φύματος ᾖ — This is a conditional relative clause with the subjunctive ᾖ and the negative particle μή within the broader relative structure introduced by ᾟ τινι... The expression "not in another vessel and membrane" (ἐν τεύχει ἑτέρῳ καὶ χιτῶνι) is metaphorical, specifying a condition where the pus is not encapsulated in a localized abscess (φῦμα) but is free and accumulating within the uterine cavity.
