Φύσιες δὲ ὡς πρὸς τὰς ὥρας, αἱ μὲν πρὸς θέρος, αἱ δὲ πρὸς χειμῶνα εὖ καὶ κακῶς πεφύκασιν, αἱ δὲ πρὸς χώρας καὶ ἡλικίας καὶ διαίτας καὶ τὰς ἄλλας καταστάσιας τῶν νούσων ἄλλαι πρὸς ἄλλας εὖ καὶ κακῶς πεφύκασι, καὶ ἡλικίαι πρὸς ὥρας καὶ χώρας καὶ διαίτας καὶ πρὸς καταστάσιας νούσων·
As for constitutions with respect to the seasons, some are well or ill-disposed towards summer, others towards winter, and others towards localities, ages, regimens, and other constitutions of diseases, different ones being well or ill-disposed towards different things; so also ages with respect to seasons, localities, regimens, and constitutions of diseases.
καὶ ἐν τῇσιν ὥρῃσι, δίαιται, καὶ σιτία, καὶ ποτὰ, ὁ μὲν γὰρ χειμὼν ἀργὸς ἔργων, καὶ πέπονα τὰ ἐσιόντα καὶ ἁπλᾶ, μέγα γὰρ καὶ τοῦτο· αἱ ὀπῶραι δὲ ἐργάσιμοι, ἡλιώσιες, τὰ πινόμενα πυκνὰ, ἀκατάστατα σιτία, οἶνοι, ἀκρόδρυα.
And in the seasons, regimens, food, and drink; for winter is idle from work, and the things entering are digested and simple, which is also a great thing; but autumn is laborious, sun-exposed, drinks are frequent, foods irregular, wines and tree-fruits.

Ὥσπερ δὲ ἐκ τῶν ὡρέων τὰς νούσους ἐστὶ τεκμήρασθαι, ἔστι ποτὲ καὶ ἐκ τῶν νούσων ὕδατα καὶ ἀνέμους καὶ ανυδρίας· προγινώσκειν, οἷον βόρεια, νότια· ἔστι γὰρ εὖ μαθόντι καὶ ὀρθῶς, ὅθεν σκεπτέα, οἷον καὶ λέπραι τινὲς καὶ περὶ τὰ ἄρθρα πόνοι, ὕδατα ὅταν μέλλῃ, κνησμώδεές εἰσι, καὶ ἄλλα τοιαῦτα.
And just as it is possible to conjecture diseases from the seasons, so it is sometimes possible from the diseases to foreknow rains, winds, and droughts, as for example northern or southern ones; for it is possible for one who has learned well and correctly whence to observe, as for example some skin eruptions and pains about the joints are itchy when rains are about to occur, and other such things.

Καὶ ὑσμάτων οἷα ἢ διὰ τρίτης, ἢ ἑκάστης, ἢ διὰ περιόδων ἄλλων, καὶ τὰ συνεχέα καὶ ἀνέμων οἱ μὲν πολυήμεροι πνέουσι, καὶ ἀντιπνέουσι ἀλλήλοισιν, ἄλλοι δὲ διὰ βραχυτέρων, οἱ δὲ καὶ αὐτοὶ κατὰ περίοδον ταῦτα ἔχει τῇσι καταστάσεσιν ὁμοιότητας, ἐπὶ βραχύτερον δὲ τὰ τοιαῦτα.
And what kind of rains occur, whether every other day, or daily, or through other periods, and the continuous ones, and of winds, some blow for many days, and blow against each other, others through shorter intervals, and others themselves according to a period, these have similarities to the constitutions of the seasons, but such things occur for a shorter duration.
Καὶ εἰ μὲν ἐπὶ πλέον τὸ ἔτος· τοιοῦτον ἐὸν τὴν κατάστασιν ἐποίησε τοιαύτην, ἐπὶ πλέον καὶ τὰ νουσήματα τοιαῦτα καὶ μᾶλλον ἰσχυρότερα καὶ μέγιστα νουσήματα οὕτως ἐγένετο καὶ κοινότατα καὶ ἐπὶ πλεῖστον χρόνον.
And if the year for the most part, being such, made the constitution such, the diseases also for the most part became such, and more severe and the greatest diseases thus occurred, both most common and for the longest time.
Ἐκ τῶν πρώτων ὑδάτων, ὅταν ἐξ ἀνυδρίης πολλῆς μέλλῃ ὕδωρ ἔσεσθαι, ἔστι περὶ ὑδρώπων· προειπεῖν, καὶ ὁκόταν τἄλλα σμικρὰ σημήϊα φανῇ ἐν νηνεμίη, ἐν μεταβολῇ, ξυνακτέον, ὅσαι μὲν ἐφ᾿ οἵοισιν ὕδασιν ἢ ἀνέμοισι νοῦσοι ἐπισημαίνουσι, καὶ ἀκουστέον εἴ τις οἶδε, τοιοῦδε χειμῶνος προγενομένου, οἷον ἦρ ἢ θέρος ἔσται.
From the first rains, when rain is about to occur after great drought, it is possible to foretell about dropsies; and when other small signs appear in calm and in change, one must gather how many diseases show signs upon what kind of rains or winds, and one must listen if anyone knows, such a winter having preceded, what kind of spring or summer it will be.

Τὰ χρώματα οὐχ ὅμοια ἐν τῇσιν ὥρῃσιν, οὐδὲ ἐν βορείοισι καὶ νοτίοισιν, οὐδ᾿ ἐν τῇσιν ἡλικίῃσιν αὐτὸς πρὸς ἑωυτὸν, οὐδ᾿ ἄλλος ἄλλῳ οὐδενί.
Colors are not the same in the seasons, nor in northern and southern winds, nor in ages of a person compared to himself, nor of one to any other.
Σκεπτέον δὲ ἐξ ὧν ἴσμεν καὶ παρεόντων καὶ ἀτρεμεόντων περὶ χροιῶν, καὶ ὅτι αἱ ἡλικίαι τῇσιν ὥρῃσιν ἐμφερέες εἰσὶ καὶ χροιῇ καὶ τρόπῳ.
But we must observe concerning complexions from what we know, both present and stable, and that ages are similar to the seasons both in complexion and in manner.

Οἱ αἱμῤῥοΐδας ἔχοντες οὔτε πλευρίτιδι, οὔτε περιπνευμονίῃ, οὔτε φαγεδαίνῃ, οὔτε δοθιῆσιν, οὔτε τερμίνθοισιν ἁλίσκονται, ἴσως δὲ οὐδὲ λέπρῃσιν, ἴσως δὲ οὐδὲ ἀλφοῖσιν· ἰητρευθέντες γε μὴν ἀκαίρως, συχνοὶ τοιούτοισιν οὐ βραδέως ἑάλωσαν, καὶ ὀλέθρια οὕτως·
Those who have hemorrhoids are neither attacked by pleurisy, nor by pneumonia, nor by phagedena, nor by boils, nor by terminthi, nor perhaps by leprosy, nor perhaps by alphos; yet if they are treated unseasonably, many are quickly captured by such, and thus fatally.
καὶ ὅσαι ἄλλαι ἀποστάσιες, οἷον σύριγγες, ἑτέρων ἄκος· ὅσα δὲ, ἐφ᾿ οἷσι γενόμενα ῥύεται, τούτων προγενόμενα κωλύματα·
And all other metastases, such as fistulae, are the cure of other things; and whatever things, by occurring upon certain conditions, save them, the prior occurrence of these acts as preventive.
οἱ ὕποπτοι τόποι ὑποδεξάμενοι πόνῳ ἢ βάρει, ἢ ἄλλῳ τινὶ ῥύονται· ἄλλοισιν αἱ κοινωνίαι·
Suspected places, by receiving pain, heaviness, or some other thing, save the patient; in others there are communications.
διὰ τὴν ῥοπὴν οὐκ ἔτι αἷμα ἔρχεται, ἀλλὰ κατὰ τοῦ χυμοῦ τὴν ξυγγένειαν τοιαῦτα πτύουσιν·
Because of the inclination, blood no longer comes, but according to the affinity of the humor they spit up such things.
ἔστιν οἷσιν αἷμα ἀφίεσθαι ἐν καιρῷ ἐπὶ τοῖσι τοιούτοισιν, ἐπ᾿ ἄλλοισι δὲ ὥσπερ ἐπὶ τούτοισι τοῦτο οὐκ εἰκὸς, κώλυσις, ἐπὶ τοῖσι δὲ δὴ αἱματώδεα πτύουσιν ὥρη, πλευρῖτις, χολή.
There are some for whom it is proper to let blood in season for such things, but for others, as for these, this is not reasonable, but a prevention; and indeed, for those who spit up bloody things, the season, pleurisy, and bile are responsible.
Τὰ παρὰ τὸ οὖς οἷσιν ἀμφὶ κρίσιν γενόμενα μὴ ἐκπυήσει, τούτου λαπασσομένου, ὑποστροφὴ γίνεται· καὶ κατὰ λόγον τῶν ὑποστροφέων τῆς ὑποστροφῆς γενομένης, αὖθις αἴρεται καὶ παραμένει, ὥσπερ αἱ τῶν πυρετῶν ὑποστροφαὶ, ἐν ὁμοίῃ περιόδῳ· ἐπὶ τούτοισιν ἐλπὶς ἐς ἄρθρα ἀφίστασθαι.
Parotid swellings which occur around the crisis and do not suppurate, when this subsides, a relapse occurs; and according to the proportion of the relapses when the relapse occurs, it rises again and remains, just like the relapses of fevers in a similar period; in these there is hope of metastasis to the joints.
Οὖρον παχὺ, λευκὸν, οἷον τῷ τοῦ Ἀντιγένεος, ἐπὶ τοῖσι κοπιώδεσι τεταρταίοισιν ἔστιν ὅτε ἔρχεται, καὶ ῥύεται τῆς ἀποστάσιος, ἢν δὲ πρὸς τούτῳ καὶ αἱμοῤῥαγήσῃ ἀπὸ ῥινῶν ἱκανῶς, καὶ πάνυ.
Thick, white urine, such as that of Antigenis, sometimes comes in fatiguing quartan fevers, and saves from metastasis, but if in addition to this there is also sufficient hemorrhage from the nose, completely so.
ᾯ τὸ ἔντερον ἐπὶ δεξιὰ ἀρθριτικῷ πάθει ἐγένετο, ἦν ἡσυχαίτερος, ἐπεὶ δὲ τοῦτο ἰητρεύθη, ἐπιπονώτερος.
He whose bowel was displaced to the right in an arthritic disease was easier, but when this was cured, he was in greater pain.
