Ἢν δὲ ἐν πυρετῷ χειμερινῷ ἡ γλῶσσα τρηχείη γένηται καὶ ἀψυχίαι ἐνέωσι, φιλέει τῷ τοιῷδε καὶ ἐπάνεσις εἶναι τοῦ πυρετοῦ ἀλλ᾿ ὅμως τὸν τοιόνδε παραφυλάσσειν τῇ λιμοκτονίῃ καὶ ὑδατοποσίῃ καὶ μελικρήτου πόσει·
And if, in a winter fever, the tongue becomes rough and there is fainting, in such a patient there is also accustomed to be a remission of the fever; but nevertheless, one must watch such a patient with starvation, drinking of water, and drinking of hydromel.
καὶ χυλοῖσι παραφύλασσε, μηδὲν πιστεύων τῇ ἀνέσει τῶν πυρετῶν, ὡς οἱ τοιάδε ἔχοντες σημεῖα, ἐπικίνδυνοί εἰσι θνήσκειν·
And watch him with broths, not at all trusting the remission of the fevers, because those who have such symptoms are in danger of dying.
ὁκόταν δὲ ταῦτα συνειδῇς, οὅτω προλέγειν, ἤν σοι ἀρέσκῃ, θεωρήσας εὖ μάλα.
And when you are aware of these things, predict accordingly, if it pleases you, having observed very well.
Ὁκόταν δὲ πυρετοῖσε φοβερόν τι γένηται πεμπταίοισιν ἐοῦσιν, ἡ κοιλίη ἐξαίφνης ὑγρὰ διαχωρήσῃ, καὶ ἀψυχίη γένηται, ἢ ἀφωνίη ἐπιλάβῃ, ἢ σπασμώδης γένηται ἢ λυγμώδης, ἐπὶ τούτοισιν ἀσώδεα φιλέει γίγνεσθαι, καὶ περὶ ὑποῤῥίνιον καὶ μέτωπον ἱδρῶτες καὶ αὐχένα ὄπισθεν τῆς κεφαλῆς·
And when, in fevers on the fifth day, something terrible happens—the belly suddenly discharges liquid, and fainting occurs, or loss of speech seizes him, or he becomes convulsed or hiccuping—on top of these symptoms, nausea is accustomed to occur, and sweats around the philtrum, the forehead, and the neck behind the head.
οἱ δὲ ταῦτα πάσχοντες θνήσκουσιν οὐκ ἐς μακρὸν πνευματωθέντες.
And those who suffer these things die not long after, becoming bloated with gas.
Ὁκόσοισι δὲ ἐν πυρετοῖσι τὰ σκέλεα γίγνεται φυματώδεα, καὶ ἐγχρονιζόμενα μὴ ἐκπεπαίνεται ἔτι ἐόντων ἐν πυρετοῖσιν, ἢν καὶ προσπέσῃ πνιγμὸς ἐν φάρυγγι, ἰσχνων ἐόντων τῶν περὶ φάρυγγα, καὶ μὴ πεπαίνηται, ἀλλὰ σβεσθῇ, φιλέει τῷ τοιῷδε αἷμα ἐκ τῶν ῥινῶν ῥέειν·
And for those in whom, during fevers, the legs become swollen, and though time passes they do not ripen while they are still in fevers—if also choking in the throat attacks them while the parts about the throat are thin, and it does not ripen but is extinguished—blood is accustomed to flow from the nose of such a patient.
κἄν μὲν πουλὺ ῥυῇ, λύσιν σημαίνει τῆς νούσου· ἢν δὲ μὴ, μακρήν· ὁκόσῳ δ᾿ ἂν ἔλασσον ῥυῇ, τοσῷδε χεῖρον καὶ ἐπίμηκες·
And if indeed it flows abundantly, it indicates a resolution of the disease; but if not, a long one; and by how much less it flows, by so much worse and more prolonged it is.
ἢν δὲ τἄλλα ῥήϊστα γένηται, προσδέχεσθαι τῷ τοιῷδε ἐς πόδας ἀλγήματα·
But if other things become very easy, expect in such a patient pains in the feet.
ἢν δὲ ἅψηται τοῦ ποδὸς, καὶ ἐπώδυνος γενόμενος παραμένῃ πυριφλεγὴς γενόμενος, καὶ μὴ λυθῇ, κατὰ σμικρὸν ἥξει καὶ ἐς αὐχένα ἀλγήματα καὶ ἐς κληἴδα καὶ ἐς ὦμον καὶ ἐς στῆθος καὶ ἐς ἄρθρον, καὶ τοῦτο δεήσει φυματῶδες γενέσθαι·
And if it attacks the foot, and remaining painful, continues burning hot, and is not resolved, pains will gradually come also to the neck, the clavicle, the shoulder, the chest, and the joint, and this will necessarily become swollen.
σβεννυμένων δὲ τουτέων, ἢν αἱ χεῖρες ἐφέλκωνται ἢ τρομεραὶ γένωνται, σπασμὸς τὸν τοιόνδε ἐπιλαμβάνει καὶ παραφροσύνη· ἀτὰρ καὶ φλυζάκια ἐπὶ τὴν ὀφρὺν, καὶ ἐρυθήματα ἴσχει, καὶ τὸ βλέφαρον τὸ ἕτερον παρὰ τὸ ἕτερον παραβλαστάνει, καὶ σκληρὴ φλεγμονὴ κατέχει, καὶ οἰδέει ἰσχυρῶς ὁ ὀφθαλμὸς, καὶ ἡ παραφροσύνη μέγα ἐπιδιδοῖ·
And when these are extinguished, if the hands are drawn or become trembling, convulsion and delirium seize such a patient; furthermore, small pustules appear on the eyebrow, and redness, and one eyelid grows abnormally compared to the other, and a hard inflammation possesses it, and the eye swells greatly, and delirium increases vastly.
αἱ δὲ νύκτες μᾶλλον σημαίνουσιν ἢ αἱ ἡμέραι τὰ περὶ τὴν παραφροσύνην.
And the nights rather than the days indicate the things concerning delirium.
Τὰ δὲ σημεῖα μάλιστα γίγνεται πολλὰ ἐπὶ τὸν περισσὸν ἀριθμὸν ἢ ἐπὶ τὸν ἄρτιον· ὁκοτέρῳ δ᾿ ἂν τούτων τῶν ἀριθμῶν γίγνηται, ὄλεθροι ἐπιγίγνονται.
And the symptoms especially occur in great numbers on the odd day or on the even day; on whichever of these numbers they occur, destruction follows.
Τοὺς τοιούτους δὲ ἢν μὲν ἐξ ἀρχῆς φαρμακεύειν προαιρῇ, πρὸ τῆς πέμπτης, ἢν βορβορύζῃ ἡ κοιλίη· εἰ δὲ μὴ, ἐᾷν ἀφαρμακεύτους εἶναι·
And if you choose to treat such patients with medicine from the beginning, do so before the fifth day, if the belly rumbles; but if not, let them be without medicine.
ἢν δὲ διαβορβορύζῃ, καὶ τὰ ὑποχωρήματα χολώδεα ᾖ, σκαμμωνίῳ ὑποκάθαιρε μετρίως·
And if it rumbles continuously and the stools are bilious, purge moderately with scammony.
τῇ δὲ ἄλλῃ θεραπείῃ, ὡς ἐλάχιστα προσφέρειν πόματα καὶ ῥοφήματα, ἵνα βελτιόνως ἔχῃ, ἢν μὴ ὑπερβῶσι τὴν τεσσαρεσκαιδεκάτην ἐπανέντες.
In other treatment, administer as few drinks and broths as possible, so that they may be better off, unless they pass the fourteenth day having remitted.
Ὁκόταν πυρέσσοντι τεσσαρεσκαιδεκαταίῳ ἐόντι ἀφωνίη προσγένηται, οὐ φιλέει ἥκειν λύσις ταχείη, οὐδ᾿ ἀπαλλαγὴ τοῦ νουσήματος γίγνεσθαι, ἀλλὰ χρόνον τῷ τοιῷδε σημαίνει· ὁκόταν δὲ φανῇ ἐπὶ τῇ ἡμέρῃ ταύτῃ, μακρότερον ξυμπίπτει.
When loss of speech occurs in a patient on the fourteenth day of fever, a rapid resolution is not accustomed to come, nor does release from the disease happen, but it indicates a long duration for such a patient; and when it appears on this day, it turns out to be more prolonged.
Ὁκόταν δὲ πυρέσσοντι τεταρταίῳ ἡ γλῶσσα ἐκτεταραγμένα διαλέγηται, καὶ ἡ κοιλίη χολώδεα ὑποχωρέῃ ὑγρὰ, φιλέει παραληρέειν ὁ τοιόσδε· ἀλλὰ χρὴ παραφυλάσσειν παρεπόμενον τοῖσιν ἀποβαίνουσιν.
And when, in a patient on the fourth day of fever, the tongue speaks confusedly, and the belly discharges liquid bilious stools, such a person is accustomed to become delirious; but one must watch closely, following along with the outcomes.
Θερινῆς καὶ μετοπωρινῆς ὥρης ἐπὶ τῶν ὀξέων αἵματος ἀπόσταξις ἐξαπίνης ξυντονίην καὶ πολλὴν θεραπείην κατὰ τὰς φλέβας δηλοῖ, καὶ ἐς τὴν ὑστεραίην λεπτῶν οὔρων ἐπιφάσιας·
In the summer and autumn season, in acute diseases, a sudden dripping of blood from the nose indicates tension and much treatment in the veins, and on the next day appearances of thin urine.
καὶ ἢν ἀκμάζῃ τῇ ἡλικίῃ, καὶ τὸ σῶμα ἐκ γυμνασίων ἢ εὐσαρκώσιος ἔχῃ, ἢ μελαγχολικὸς ᾖ, ἢ ἐκ πόσιος χεῖρες τρομεραὶ, καλῶς ἔχει παραφροσύνην προειπεῖν ἢ σπασμόν·
And if he is in the prime of life, and has a body from exercise or abundant flesh, or is melancholic, or has trembling hands from drinking, it is well to predict delirium or convulsion.
κἢν μὲν ἐν ἀρτίῃσιν ἐπιγένηται, βέλτιον, ἐν κρισίμῃσι δὲ ὀλέθριον·
And if indeed it occurs on even days, it is better, but on critical days, destructive.
ἢν μὲν πουλὺ ἀλὲς ἀποσυθὲν αἷμα ἐξόδους ποιήσηται, τῆς πλεονεξίης κατὰ ῥῖνας, ἢ κατὰ ἕδρην ἐμπλησθείσης, ἀπόστασιν, ἢ πόνους ἐν ὑποχονδρίῳ, ἢ ἐς ὄρχιας, ἢ ἐς σκέλεα·
If indeed a large amount of blood rushes out in a mass, making exits from the nose, or from the rectum being filled with the excess, it brings about a metastasis, or resolution of pains in the hypochondrium, or in the testicles, or in the legs.
λυθέντων δὲ τουτέων, ἔξοδοι γίγνονται πτυσμῶν παχέων, οὔρων λείων, λευκῶν.
And when these are resolved, exits occur of thick spittle and smooth, white urine.
Πυρετῷ λυγγώδει, ὀπὸν σιλφίου, ὀξύμελι, δαῦκον τρίψας, πιεῖν δίδου, καὶ χαλβάνην ἐν μέλιτι, καὶ κύμινον ἐκλεικτικὸν, καὶ χυλὸν πτισάνης ἐπὶ τουτέοισι ῥοφέειν·
For a fever with hiccups, give to drink silphium juice, oxymel, and wild carrot, having ground them, and galbanum in honey, and cumin as an electuary, and let him sup broth of barley upon these.
ἄφυκτος δὲ ὁ τοιοῦτος, ἢν μὴ ἱδρῶτες κριτικοὶ καὶ ὕπνοι ὁμαλοὶ ἐπιγένωνται, καὶ οὖρα παχέα καὶ δριμέα καταδράμῃ, ἢ ἐς ἀπόστασιν στηρίξῃ·
And such a patient cannot escape, unless critical sweats and even sleep follow, and thick and acrid urine runs down, or settles into a metastasis.
κόκκαλος καὶ σμύρνα ἐκλεικτόν· πίνειν δὲ τούτοισι διδόναι ὀξύμελι ὡς ἐλάχιστον· ἢν δὲ διψώδεες ἔωσι σφόδρα, τοῦ κριθίνου ὕδατος.
Pine-nut and myrrh as an electuary; and to these give oxymel to drink as little as possible; and if they are very thirsty, some of the barley water.
