In connection with this anarchy, Diodotus, a slave of the kings, brought the child Alexander, son of Alexander the bastard and the daughter of Ptolemy, to the kingship.
And having killed the child, he himself laid hands on the rule, renaming himself Tryphon.
But Antiochus, the brother of Demetrius the captive, having heard about the captivity while in Rhodes, killed him, returning to his ancestral land with much labor.
And he too campaigned against Phraates, demanding his brother.
Phraates indeed feared him and sent Demetrius away; but Antiochus, even so, engaged with the Parthians, and being defeated, killed himself.
And his wife Cleopatra also killed Demetrius when he returned to his kingship, murdering him through jealousy of his marriage with Rhodogune, for which very reason she had previously married Antiochus, the brother of Demetrius.
And she had two sons by Demetrius, Seleucus and Antiochus, who was surnamed Grypus, and by Antiochus, Antiochus, who was surnamed Cyzicenus.
Of these, she had sent Grypus to Athens, and Cyzicenus to Cyzicus, to be brought up.
And Seleucus, who immediately after his father Demetrius put on the diadem, she killed by shooting him with an arrow, either because she feared for her murder of his father, or from a mad hatred toward everyone.
After Seleucus, Grypus became king, and forced his mother to drink the poison she had mixed for him.
She indeed finally paid the penalty, but Grypus too proved to be worthy of his mother; for he plotted against Cyzicenus, even though he was his half-brother by the same mother.
But he, having learned of it, made war against him and drove him out of his rule, and became king of the Syrians in his stead.
But from him too, Seleucus, the son of Antiochus Grypus, marching against him though he was his uncle, took away the rule.
And being violent and extremely tyrannical, he was burned to death in the gymnasium at Mopsuestia in Cilicia.
And Antiochus, the son of Cyzicenus, succeeded him; whom, when plotted against by his cousin Seleucus, the Syrians believe was saved because of his piety, and for this reason they nicknamed him Eusebes—though a courtesan saved him, having fallen in love with his beauty—but to me, the Syrians seem to have given him the name in mockery; for this "Pious" one married Selene, who had also been married to his father Cyzicenus, and to his uncle Grypus.
Therefore, because God pursued him, Tigranes drove him out of his rule.
And his son, born to him of Selene, who was brought up in Asia and for this reason nicknamed Asiaticus, Pompey deprived of the rule of Syria, as has been said by me, who was the seventeenth king of the Syrians from Seleucus (for I exclude Alexander and the son of Alexander as bastards, and their slave Diodotus), having ruled for only one year during the preoccupations of Pompey.
The rule of the Seleucids lasted for two hundred and thirty years; and if one should examine the time from Alexander to the Romans, one must add the fourteen years of Tigranes to the two hundred and thirty years.
This much indeed I had to say about the Macedonians who ruled Syria, as in a history of others.
