After the death of Seleucus, the successors who received the rule over Syria from father to son were these: first, this Antiochus, the one who fell in love with his stepmother, who was also surnamed Soter (Savior) for having driven out the Galatians who had invaded Asia from Europe; and second, another Antiochus, born of this marriage, who was first given the surname Theos (God) by the Milesians because he overthrew the tyrant Timarchus for them.
But this "Theos" was killed by his wife with poison.
He had two wives, Laodice and Berenice, daughter of Ptolemy Philadelphus, the latter through love and betrothal; and Laodice killed him, and after him Berenice and the infant of Berenice.
And Ptolemy, the son of Philadelphus, avenging these things, killed Laodice, invaded Syria, and marched as far as Babylon.
And the Parthians then began their revolt, since the rule of the Seleucids was thrown into confusion.
After the "Theos," Seleucus, the son of the "Theos" and Laodice, became king of Syria, who had the surname Kallinikos (Glorious Victor).
And after Seleucus, his two sons, each according to their age, Seleucus and Antiochus.
For Seleucus, being weak and poor and having a disobedient army, was plotted against by his friends with poison, and ruled for only two years; and Antiochus is this one surnamed the Great, about whom I have spoken long ago as having waged war against the Romans.
He ruled for thirty-seven years.
And I have spoken before about both of his sons who ruled, Seleucus and Antiochus, Seleucus for twelve years, inactively and weakly due to his father's misfortune, and Antiochus for less than twelve years, in which he took Artaxias the Armenian and campaigned against Egypt against Ptolemy VI, who was left an orphan with his brother.
And when he was encamped near Alexandria, Popilius came as an ambassador from the Romans, carrying a tablet in which it was written that Antiochus should not make war on the Ptolemies.
When he had read it and said he would deliberate, Popilius drew a circle around him with his staff and said: "Deliberate here." And he, being astounded, retreated, plundered the temple of Aphrodite of Elymais, and died of wasting away, leaving behind a nine-year-old child, Antiochus Eupator, as I have also spoken about him.
And I have also spoken about Demetrius who came after him, who was a hostage in Rome, and having escaped his hostage-ship, became king, and he too was called Soter (Savior) by the Syrians, being the second to be so named after the son of Seleucus Nicator.
But a certain Alexander rose up against him, falsely claiming to be of the Seleucid line; and Ptolemy, the king of Egypt, helped Alexander out of hatred for Demetrius.
And Demetrius, on account of Ptolemy, lost his rule and died; but Demetrius, the son of this Demetrius Soter, drove out Alexander, and for this, having defeated a man who was a bastard of the race, he was named Nicator (Victor) by the Syrians, he too being the second after Seleucus.
He too, after Seleucus, campaigned against the Parthians, and being taken prisoner, lived at the court of King Phraates, and the king joined his sister Rhodogune to him in marriage.
