When Hannibal, since his attempt had failed, returned immediately to his camp and revealed his deception, not even this taught Terentius to suspect all of Hannibal's moves. Instead, just as he was, rushing in arms into the general's tent while the senators, commanders, and tribunes were still present, he accused Aemilius of using the auspices as a pretext and robbing the state of a clear victory, hesitating out of cowardice or opposing him out of jealousy.
As he shouted thus in anger, the army surrounding the tent listened and began to abuse Aemilius.
He said many useful things to those inside, but in vain; and as the others except Servilius agreed with Terentius, he yielded.
On the following day, Aemilius himself led and drew up the army, for Terentius gave way.
Hannibal noticed this, and at that time did not go out against them (for he had not yet drawn up his army for battle). On the next day, both sides descended into the plain, the Romans drawn up in three divisions, standing at a short distance from one another, and each part had the infantry in the center, and the light-armed troops and cavalry on either side.
As commanders, Aemilius was stationed in the center, Servilius on the left, and Terentius on the right, each having a thousand select cavalry around himself to assist wherever there might be distress.
Thus the Romans drew up.
Hannibal, first of all, knowing that around midday a dark east wind customarily blew in that place, secured beforehand the position where he would have the wind at his back.
Next, in a woody and ravine-filled hill, he placed cavalry and light-armed troops in ambush, who were ordered to fall upon the enemy's rear when the phalanxes were engaged in battle and the wind had risen.
He also girded five hundred Celtiberians with other shorter swords under their tunics, in addition to their long swords, whom he himself intended to signal when there was need to use them.
He too divided his entire army into three parts, and placed the cavalry on the wings at large intervals, to see if they could encircle the enemy.
He placed his brother Mago on the right wing, and his nephew Hannon on the other; he himself held the center to counter the reputation of Aemilius's experience.
Two thousand select cavalry rode beside him, and Maharbal, having another thousand, was on reserve to support wherever he saw any distress.
While doing these things, he prolonged the time until the second hour, so that the wind might rise sooner.
When everything was ready on both sides, the generals ran through the ranks encouraging them; the Romans reminded them of parents, children, wives, and their past defeat, as they were to be judged concerning their survival in this battle; while Hannibal reminded his men of their past successes against these very opponents, and how shameful it was to be defeated by those who had already been defeated.
When the trumpets sounded and the phalanxes shouted, first their archers, slingers, and stone-throwers ran forward into the space between and began the engagement. After these, the phalanxes advanced to the work, and there was much slaughter and distress, both sides fighting with great spirit. Meanwhile, Hannibal signaled to his cavalry to encircle the enemy's wings, and the Roman cavalry, being fewer than the enemy, advanced against them, and though stretching their line thin, they fought with eagerness, especially those on the left wing by the sea.
Hannibal and Maharbal together led those around them with an immense and barbaric shout, thinking to terrify their opponents.
But the Romans withstood even them steadily and without fear.
