The history begins with Aeneas, the son of Anchises, the son of Capys, who flourished during the Trojan War, fled after the capture of Troy, and, after a long wandering, sailed into a certain shore of Italy called Laurentum, where his camp is still shown, and they call the shore Troy after him.
At that time, Faunus, the son of Ares, ruled over the Aborigines, the Italians of that region; he joined his daughter Lavinia in marriage to Aeneas and gave him land with a circumference of four hundred stades.
Aeneas founded a city and named it Lavinium after his wife.
In the third year after Faunus died, Aeneas succeeded to the rule by virtue of his marriage connection, and named the Aborigines Latins after his father-in-law Latinus Faunus.
Again in the third year, on account of his wife Lavinia, who had been betrothed to the king of the Rutuli, a Tyrrhenian people, Aeneas was slain by the law of war, and Euryleon, renamed Ascanius, succeeded to the rule; he was born to Aeneas by Creusa, the daughter of Priam, who had been his wife in Ilium.
But some say that Ascanius, the successor to the rule, was born to him by Lavinia.
When Ascanius died, in the fourth year after the founding of Alba (for he too had founded a city, calling it Alba, and had relocated the people from Lavinium), Silvius succeeded to the rule.
And they say that the son of Silvius was Aeneas Silvius, and of Aeneas, Latinus Silvius, and of him, Capys, and of Capys, Capetus was born, and of Capetus, Tiberinus, and of him, Agrippa, and of him, Romulus.
And this last was struck by lightning; of him was born a son, Aventinus, and of Aventinus, Proca was born.
And the name Silvius was a surname for all of them.
To Proca two sons were born, the elder Numitor, and the younger Amulius.
When the elder received the rule from his dying father, the younger took possession of it by insolence and force, having wrested it away.
He killed his brother's son Egestus, and appointed his daughter Rhea Silvia as a priestess, so that she might remain childless; however, Numitor was saved from the conspiracy against his life by the gentleness of his character and his great moderation.
But Silvia became pregnant contrary to the law.
Amulius seized her for punishment, and gave the two boys born of her to shepherds, to cast the infants into the nearby river; the name of the river was Thybris, and the boys were Romus and Romulus, tracing their descent from Aeneas on their mother's side; for the one who begot them was unknown.
