§6.31.1ὁ δʼ ὑπὸ τὰς τῶν χιλιάρχων σκηνὰς ὄπισθεν τόπος ὑποπεπτωκώς, ἐξ ἑκατέρου δὲ τοῦ μέρους τῆς τοῦ στρατηγίου περιστάσεως παρακείμενος, ὁ μὲν εἰς ἀγορὰν γίνεται τόπος, ὁ δʼ ἕτερος τῷ τε ταμιείῳ καὶ ταῖς ἅμα τούτῳ χορηγίαις. §6.31.2ἀπὸ δὲ τῆς ἐφʼ ἑκάτερα τελευταίας τῶν χιλιάρχων σκηνῆς κατόπιν οἷον ἐπικάμπιον ἔχοντες τάξιν πρὸς τὰς σκηνάς, οἱ τῶν ἐπιλέκτων ἱππέων ἀπόλεκτοι καί τινες τῶν ἐθελοντὴν στρατευομένων τῇ τῶν ὑπάτων χάριτι, πάντες οὗτοι στρατοπεδεύουσι παρὰ τὰς ἐκ τῶν πλαγίων τοῦ χάρακος ἐπιφανείας, βλέποντες οἱ μὲν ἐπὶ τὰς τοῦ ταμιείου παρασκευάς, οἱ δʼ ἐκ θατέρου μέρους εἰς τὴν ἀγοράν. §6.31.3ὡς δʼ ἐπὶ τὸ πολὺ συμβαίνει τούτοις μὴ μόνον στρατοπεδεύειν σύνεγγυς τῶν ὑπάτων, ἀλλὰ καὶ κατὰ τὰς πορείας καὶ κατὰ τὰς ἄλλας χρείας περὶ τὸν ὕπατον καὶ τὸν ταμίαν ποιεῖσθαι τὴν ἐπιμέλειαν καὶ τὴν ὅλην διατριβήν. §6.31.4ἀντίκεινται δὲ τούτοις ἐπὶ τὸν χάρακα βλέποντες οἱ τὴν παραπλήσιον χρείαν παρεχόμενοι πεζοὶ τοῖς προειρημένοις ἱππεῦσιν. §6.31.5ἑξῆς δὲ τούτοις δίοδος ἀπολείπεται πλάτος ποδῶν ἑκατόν, παράλληλος μὲν ταῖς τῶν χιλιάρχων σκηναῖς, ἐπὶ θάτερα δὲ τῆς ἀγορᾶς καὶ στρατηγίου καὶ ταμιείου παρατείνουσα παρὰ πάντα τὰ προειρημένα μέρη τοῦ χάρακος. §6.31.6παρὰ δὲ τὴν ἀνωτέρω πλευρὰν ταύτης οἱ τῶν συμμάχων ἱππεῖς ἐπίλεκτοι στρατοπεδεύουσι, βλέποντες ἐπί τε τὴν ἀγορὰν ἅμα καὶ τὸ στρατήγιον καὶ τὸ ταμιεῖον. §6.31.7κατὰ μέσην δὲ τὴν τούτων τῶν ἱππέων παρεμβολὴν καὶ κατʼ αὐτὴν τὴν τοῦ στρατηγίου περίστασιν δίοδος ἀπολείπεται πεντήκοντα ποδῶν, φέρουσα μὲν ἐπὶ τὴν ὄπισθε πλευρὰν τῆς στρατοπεδείας, τῇ δὲ τάξει πρὸς ὀρθὰς κειμένη τῇ προειρημένῃ πλατείᾳ. §6.31.8τοῖς δʼ ἱππεῦσι τούτοις ἀντίτυποι τίθενται πάλιν οἱ τῶν συμμάχων ἐπίλεκτοι πεζοί, βλέποντες πρὸς τὸν χάρακα καὶ τὴν ὄπισθεν ἐπιφάνειαν τῆς ὅλης στρατοπεδείας. §6.31.9τὸ δʼ ἀπολειπόμενον ἐξ ἑκατέρου τοῦ μέρους τούτων κένωμα παρὰ τὰς ἐκ τῶν πλαγίων πλευρὰς δίδοται τοῖς ἀλλοφύλοις καὶ τοῖς ἐκ τοῦ καιροῦ προσγινομένοις συμμάχοις. §6.31.10τούτων δʼ οὕτως ἐχόντων τὸ μὲν σύμπαν σχῆμα γίνεται τῆς στρατοπεδείας τετράγωνον ἰσόπλευρον, τὰ δὲ κατὰ μέρος ἤδη τῆς τε ῥυμοτομίας ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ τῆς ἄλλης οἰκονομίας πόλει παραπλησίαν ἔχει τὴν διάθεσιν. §6.31.11τὸν δὲ χάρακα τῶν σκηνῶν ἀφιστᾶσι κατὰ πάσας τὰς ἐπιφανείας διακοσίους πόδας.
The space situated behind, below the tents of the tribunes, and adjacent on each side to the space around the praetorium, becomes in one part the forum, and in the other the quaestorium and the supplies stored with it. Behind the last tent of the tribunes on either side, holding a formation as it were at a right angle to the tents, the picked men of the extraordinary cavalry and some of those serving voluntarily through favor to the consuls, all these encamp along the side faces of the rampart, some facing the supplies of the quaestorium, and others on the other side facing the forum. And as a rule it happens that these not only encamp near the consuls, but also on marches and in other services they attend to and spend all their time around the consul and the quaestor. Opposite to these, facing the rampart, are placed the infantry who perform a similar service to the aforementioned cavalry. Next to these, a passage is left of a width of a hundred feet, parallel to the tents of the tribunes, but extending on the other side of the forum, the praetorium, and the quaestorium, along all the aforementioned parts of the rampart. Along the upper side of this passage, the select cavalry of the allies encamp, facing both the forum, the praetorium, and the quaestorium. In the middle of the camp of these cavalry, and right opposite the space around the praetorium, a passage of fifty feet is left, leading to the rear side of the camp, and situated perpendicular to the aforementioned broad street. Opposite to these cavalry again are placed the select infantry of the allies, facing the rampart and the rear face of the whole camp. The empty space left on each side of these along the side faces is given to foreigners and to allies who happen to join as occasion demands. This being so, the overall shape of the camp becomes an equilateral square, and the internal details of its street-planning and other arrangements resemble the layout of a city. They keep the rampart at a distance of two hundred feet from the tents on all sides.
τοῦτο δὲ τὸ κένωμα πολλὰς καὶ δοκίμους αὐτοῖς παρέχεται χρείας. §6.31.12πρός τε γὰρ τὰς εἰσαγωγὰς καὶ τὰς ἐξαγωγὰς τῶν στρατοπέδων εὐφυῶς ἔχει καὶ δεόντως ἕκαστοι γὰρ κατὰ τὰς ἑαυτῶν ῥύμας εἰς τοῦτο τὸ κένωμα ποιοῦνται τὴν ἔξοδον, ἀλλʼ οὐκ εἰς μίαν συμπίπτοντες ἀνατρέπουσι καὶ συμπατοῦσιν ἀλλήλους· §6.31.13τάς τε τῶν παρεισαγομένων θρεμμάτων καὶ τὰς ἐκ τῶν πολεμίων λείας εἰς τοῦτο παράγοντες ἀσφαλῶς τηροῦσι τὰς νύκτας. §6.31.14τὸ δὲ μέγιστον, ἐν ταῖς ἐπιθέσεσι ταῖς νυκτεριναῖς οὔτε πῦρ οὔτε βέλος ἐξικνεῖται πρὸς αὐτοὺς πλὴν τελείως ὀλίγων· γίνεται δὲ καὶ ταῦτα σχεδὸν ἀβλαβῆ διά τε τὸ μέγεθος τῆς ἀποστάσεως καὶ διὰ τὴν τῶν σκηνῶν περίστασιν.
This empty space provides them with many excellent uses. For it is extremely well and properly suited for both the entry and exit of the forces; for each division makes its exit into this empty space along its own street, and they do not, by crowding into a single one, knock down and trample one another; and bringing into this space the cattle brought in and the booty taken from the enemy, they keep them safe during the nights. And what is greatest of all, in night attacks neither fire nor missile reaches them, except for a very few; and even these become virtually harmless because of the great distance and because of the surrounding line of tents.
