§6.30.1ἀπὸ τῶν ἁστάτων πεντήκοντα πάλιν διαλείποντες πόδας τοὺς τῶν συμμάχων ἱππεῖς ἀντίους παρεμβάλλουσι τούτοις, ποιούμενοι τὴν ἀρχὴν ἀπὸ τῆς αὐτῆς εὐθείας καὶ λήγοντες ἐπὶ τὴν αὐτήν.
Having left again a distance of fifty feet from the hastati, they place the cavalry of the allies opposite to them, making their start from the same straight line and ending at the same.
§6.30.2ἔστι δὲ τὸ πλῆθος τῶν συμμάχων, ὡς ἐπάνω προεῖπα, τὸ μὲν τῶν πεζῶν πάρισον τοῖς Ῥωμαϊκοῖς στρατοπέδοις, λεῖπον τοῖς ἐπιλέκτοις, τὸ δὲ τῶν ἱππέων διπλάσιον, ἀφῃρημένου καὶ τούτων τοῦ τρίτου μέρους εἰς τοὺς ἐπιλέκτους.
The number of the allies, as I said above, is nearly equal to the Roman legions in infantry, being less by the extraordinary troops, but double in cavalry, a third part of these too having been taken for the extraordinary troops.
§6.30.3διὸ καὶ τὸ βάθος αὔξοντες τούτοις πρὸς λόγον ἐν τοῖς στρατοπεδευτικοῖς σχήμασι, πειρῶνται κατὰ τὸ μῆκος ἐξισοῦν τοῖς τῶν Ῥωμαίων στρατοπέδοις.
Therefore, by increasing their depth proportionally in the camp layouts, they endeavor to make them equal in length to the Roman legions.
§6.30.4ἀποτελεσθεισῶν δὲ τῶν ἁπασῶν πέντε διόδων, αὖθις εἰς τοὔμπαλιν ἀπεστραμμένας ὁμοίως τοῖς ἱππεῦσι τιθέασι τὰς τῶν συμμαχικῶν πεζῶν σημαίας, αὔξοντες τὸ βάθος πρὸς λόγον, βλεπούσας δὲ πρὸς τὸν χάρακα καὶ πρὸς τὰς ἐκ τῶν πλαγίων ἐπιφανείας ἑκατέρας.
When all five passages have been completed, they place the companies of the allied infantry turned in the opposite direction, in the same manner as the cavalry, increasing their depth proportionally, and making them face toward the rampart and toward each of the two sides.
§6.30.5καθʼ ἑκάστην δὲ σημαίαν τὰς πρώτας ἀφʼ ἑκατέρου τοῦ μέρους σκηνὰς οἱ ταξίαρχοι λαμβάνουσιν.
In each company, the centurions take the first tents from each side.
ἅμα δὲ τὸν προειρημένον τρόπον παρεμβάλλοντες καθʼ ἕκαστον μέρος τὸν ἕκτον οὐλαμὸν ἀπὸ τοῦ πέμπτου πεντήκοντα πόδας ἀφιστᾶσι, παραπλησίως δὲ καὶ τὰς τῶν πεζῶν τάξεις, §6.30.6ὥστε γίνεσθαι καὶ ταύτην ἄλλην διὰ μέσων τῶν στρατοπέδων δίοδον, ἐπικάρσιον μὲν πρὸς τὰς ῥύμας, παράλληλον δὲ ταῖς τῶν χιλιάρχων σκηναῖς, ἣν καλοῦσι πέμπτην διὰ τὸ παρὰ τὰ πέμπτα τάγματα παρήκειν.
At the same time, encamping each part in the aforementioned manner, they separate the sixth troop fifty feet from the fifth, and in a similar way the companies of infantry also, so that this also becomes another passage through the middle of the camp, perpendicular to the streets, but parallel to the tents of the tribunes, which they call "the Fifth" because it runs along the fifth divisions.
