§5.26.1μετὰ δὲ τὴν ταραχὴν ταύτην αἱ μὲν ἐν τῇ Φωκίδι προφανεῖσαι πράξεις ἐμποδισμούς τινας ἔσχον· οἱ δὲ περὶ τὸν Λεόντιον, §5.26.2ἀπεγνωκότες τὰς ἐν αὑτοῖς ἐλπίδας διὰ τὸ μηδὲν σφίσι προχωρεῖν τῶν ἐπινοουμένων, κατέφευγον ἐπὶ τὸν Ἀπελλῆν καὶ διαπεμπόμενοι συνεχῶς ἐκάλουν αὐτὸν ἐκ τῆς Χαλκίδος, ἀπολογιζόμενοι τὴν περὶ σφᾶς ἀπορίαν καὶ δυσχρηστίαν ἐκ τῆς πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα διαφορᾶς.
After this disturbance, the operations which had been started in Phocis met with some hindrances; while Leontius and his party, having despaired of their own hopes because none of their plans succeeded for them, sought refuge in Apelles and, sending messages continuously, summoned him from Chalcis, explaining their own difficulty and distress arising from their dispute with the king.
§5.26.3συνέβαινε δὲ τὸν Ἀπελλῆν πεποιῆσθαι τὴν ἐν τῇ Χαλκίδι διατριβὴν ἐξουσιαστικώτερον τοῦ καθήκοντος αὐτῷ· §5.26.4τὸν μὲν γὰρ βασιλέα, νέον ἔτι καὶ τὸ πλεῖον ὑφʼ αὑτὸν ὄντα καὶ μηδενὸς κύριον ἀπεδείκνυε, τὸν δὲ τῶν πραγμάτων χειρισμὸν καὶ τὴν τῶν ὅλων ἐξουσίαν εἰς αὑτὸν ἐπανῆγε.
Now it happened that Apelles made his stay in Chalcis in a manner more authoritative than was proper for him; for he pointed out that the king was still young, and mostly under his influence, and master of nothing, while he referred the management of affairs and the authority over everything to himself.
§5.26.5διόπερ οἵ τʼ ἀπὸ Μακεδονίας καὶ Θετταλίας ἐπιστάται καὶ χειρισταὶ τὴν ἀναφορὰν ἐποιοῦντο πρὸς ἐκεῖνον, αἵ τε κατὰ τὴν Ἑλλάδα πόλεις ἐν τοῖς ψηφίσμασι καὶ τιμαῖς καὶ δωρεαῖς ἐπὶ βραχὺ μὲν ἐμνημόνευον τοῦ βασιλέως, τὸ δʼ ὅλον αὐτοῖς ἦν καὶ τὸ πᾶν Ἀπελλῆς.
Therefore, the administrators and officials from Macedonia and Thessaly made their reports to him, and the cities in Greece, in their decrees, honours, and gifts, made but brief mention of the king, while Apelles was their all in all.
§5.26.6ἐφʼ οἷς Φίλιππος πυνθανόμενος πάλαι μὲν ἐσχετλίαζε καὶ δυσχερῶς ἔφερε τὸ γινόμενον, ἅτε καὶ παρὰ πλευρὰν ὄντος Ἀράτου καὶ πραγματικῶς ἐξεργαζομένου τὴν ὑπόθεσιν· ἀλλʼ ἐκαρτέρει καὶ πᾶσιν ἄδηλος ἦν ἐπὶ τί φέρεται καὶ ἐπὶ ποίας ὑπάρχει γνώμης.
Hearing of these things, Philip had long been indignant and bore what was happening with difficulty, especially since Aratus was at his side and systematically working on the matter; but he held his peace and kept everyone in the dark as to his drift and what his intention was.
§5.26.7ὁ δʼ Ἀπελλῆς, ἀγνοῶν τὰ καθʼ αὑτόν, πεπεισμένος δʼ, ἐὰν εἰς ὄψιν ἔλθῃ τῷ Φιλίππῳ, πάντα κατὰ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ γνώμην διοικήσειν, ὥρμησε τοῖς περὶ τὸν Λεόντιον ἐπικουρήσων ἐκ τῆς Χαλκίδος.
But Apelles, ignorant of his own position, and convinced that if he came into Philip's presence he would manage everything according to his own mind, set out from Chalcis to help Leontius and his party.
§5.26.8παραγενομένου δʼ εἰς τὴν Κόρινθον αὐτοῦ, μεγάλην σπουδὴν ἐποιοῦντο καὶ παρώξυνον τοὺς νέους εἰς τὴν ἀπάντησιν οἱ περὶ τὸν Λεόντιον καὶ Πτολεμαῖον καὶ Μεγαλέαν, ὄντες ἡγεμόνες τῶν τε πελταστῶν καὶ τῶν ἄλλων τῶν ἐπιφανεστάτων συστημάτων.
When he arrived in Corinth, Leontius, Ptolemy, and Megaleas, being commanders of the peltasts and of the other most distinguished corps, made great haste and urged the young men to go out to meet him.
§5.26.9γενομένης δὲ τῆς εἰσόδου τραγικῆς διὰ τὸ πλῆθος τῶν ἀπαντησάντων ἡγεμόνων καὶ στρατιωτῶν, ἧκε πρὸς τὴν αὐλὴν ὁ προειρημένος εὐθέως ἐκ πορείας.
His entry being made theatrical owing to the crowd of officers and soldiers who met him, the aforesaid person went straight to the palace from his journey.
§5.26.10βουλομένου δʼ αὐτοῦ κατὰ τὴν προγεγενημένην συνήθειαν εἰσιέναι, παρακατέσχε τις τῶν ῥαβδούχων κατὰ τὸ συντεταγμένον, φήσας οὐκ εὐκαίρως ἔχειν τὸν βασιλέα.
But when he wished to enter according to his former custom, one of the lictors stopped him in accordance with his orders, saying that the king was not at leisure.
§5.26.11ξενισθεὶς δὲ καὶ διαπορήσας ἐπὶ πολὺν χρόνον διὰ τὸ παράδοξον ὁ μὲν Ἀπελλῆς ἐπανῆγε διατετραμμένος, οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ παραχρῆμα πάντες ἀπέρρεον ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ προφανῶς, ὥστε τὸ τελευταῖον μόνον μετὰ τῶν ἰδίων παίδων εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν αὑτοῦ κατάλυσιν.
Astonished and bewildered for a long time by this unexpected reception, Apelles retired in confusion, and all the rest immediately fell away from him so visibly, that at last he entered his own lodging accompanied only by his own servants.
§5.26.12βραχεῖς γὰρ δὴ πάνυ καιροὶ πάντας μὲν ἀνθρώπους ὡς ἐπίπαν ὑψοῦσι καὶ πάλιν ταπεινοῦσι, μάλιστα δὲ τοὺς ἐν ταῖς βασιλείαις.
For indeed, very brief moments generally raise and again depress all men, and especially those in royal courts.
§5.26.13ὄντως γάρ εἰσιν οὗτοι παραπλήσιοι ταῖς ἐπὶ τῶν ἀβακίων ψήφοις· ἐκεῖναί τε γὰρ κατὰ τὴν τοῦ ψηφίζοντος βούλησιν ἄρτι χαλκοῦν καὶ παραυτίκα τάλαντον ἰσχύουσιν, οἵ τε περὶ τὰς αὐλὰς κατὰ τὸ τοῦ βασιλέως νεῦμα μακάριοι καὶ παρὰ πόδας ἐλεεινοὶ γίνονται.
For these are truly like the calculi on reckoning-boards; for those, according to the will of the calculator, are worth now a copper coin and the next moment a talent, and those at court, by the nod of the king, become happy and in an instant pitiable.
§5.26.14ὁ δὲ Μεγαλέας, ὁρῶν παρὰ δόξαν ἐκβαίνουσαν αὑτοῖς τὴν ἐπικουρίαν τὴν κατὰ τὸν Ἀπελλῆν, φόβου πλήρης ἦν καὶ περὶ δρασμὸν ἐγένετο.
And Megaleas, seeing that the help they expected from Apelles was turning out contrary to their expectation, was filled with fear and began to think of flight.
§5.26.15ὁ δʼ Ἀπελλῆς ἐπὶ μὲν τὰς συνουσίας καὶ τοιαῦτα τῶν τιμῶν παρελαμβάνετο, τῶν δὲ διαβουλίων καὶ τῆς μεθʼ ἡμέραν συμπεριφορᾶς οὐ μετεῖχε.
And Apelles was indeed admitted to social gatherings and similar honours, but he did not take part in the councils or in the daily companionship.
§5.26.16ταῖς δʼ ἑξῆς ἡμέραις ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐπὶ τὰς κατὰ τὴν Φωκίδα πράξεις πάλιν ἐκ τοῦ Λεχαίου ποιούμενος τὸν πλοῦν ἐπεσπάσατο τὸν Ἀπελλῆν.
In the following days, the king, making his voyage again from Lechaeum for the operations in Phocis, took Apelles with him.
διαπεσούσης δʼ αὐτῷ τῆς ἐπιβολῆς, οὗτος μὲν αὖτις ἐξ
