§4.80.1ἔτι δὴ τούτων πραττομένων οἱ Λεπρεᾶται καταλαβόμενοι τόπον τινὰ τῆς πόλεως ἠξίουν ἐκχωρεῖν τῆς ἄκρας καὶ τῆς πόλεως τοὺς Ἠλείους καὶ τοὺς Αἰτωλούς, ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ τοὺς παρὰ Λακεδαιμονίων· ἧκε γὰρ καὶ παρʼ ἐκείνων αὐτοῖς βοήθεια.
While these things were still being done, the Lepreans, having occupied a certain part of the city, demanded that the Eleans and Aetolians, and likewise those from the Lacedaemonians, depart from the citadel and the city; for help had come to them from the Lacedaemonians as well.
§4.80.2τὸ μὲν οὖν πρῶτον οἱ περὶ τὸν Φιλλίδαν οὐ προσεῖχον, ἀλλʼ ἔμενον, ὡς καταπληξόμενοι τοὺς ἐν τῇ πόλει·
At first, Philidas and his men paid no attention, but remained, as if they were going to terrify those in the city.
§4.80.3τοῦ δὲ βασιλέως εἰς μὲν τὴν Φιγάλειαν Ταυρίωνα μετὰ στρατιωτῶν ἐξαποστείλαντος, αὐτοῦ δὲ προάγοντος εἰς τὸ Λέπρεον καὶ συνεγγίζοντος ἤδη τῇ πόλει, συνέντες οἱ περὶ τὸν Φιλλίδαν ἐταπεινώθησαν, οἱ δὲ Λεπρεᾶται προσεπερρώσθησαν ταῖς ὁρμαῖς.
But when the king dispatched Taurion with soldiers to Phigalea, and himself advanced to Lepreum and was already drawing near to the city, Philidas and his men, realizing this, lost heart, while the Lepreans were further strengthened in their impulses.
§4.80.4καλὸν γὰρ δὴ τοῦτο Λεπρεάταις ἔργον πέπρακται, τὸ χιλίων μὲν ἔνδον ὄντων Ἠλείων, χιλίων δὲ σὺν τοῖς πειραταῖς Αἰτωλῶν, πεντακοσίων δὲ μισθοφόρων, διακοσίων δὲ Λακεδαιμονίων, πρὸς δὲ τούτοις τῆς ἄκρας κατεχομένης, ὅμως ἀντιποιήσασθαι τῆς ἑαυτῶν πατρίδος καὶ μὴ προέσθαι τὰς σφετέρας ἐλπίδας.
For indeed, a noble deed was achieved by the Lepreans: although there were inside a thousand Eleans, a thousand Aetolians including the pirates, five hundred mercenaries, and two hundred Lacedaemonians, and in addition the citadel was occupied, they nevertheless laid claim to their own fatherland and did not abandon their hopes.
§4.80.5ὁ δὲ Φιλλίδας, ὁρῶν τοὺς Λεπρεάτας ἀνδρωδῶς ὑφισταμένους καὶ τοὺς Μακεδόνας ἐγγίζοντας, ἐξεχώρησε τῆς πόλεως ἅμα τοῖς Ἠλείοις καὶ τοῖς παρὰ τῶν Λακεδαιμονίων.
Philidas, seeing the Lepreans resisting manfully and the Macedonians approaching, departed from the city together with the Eleans and those from the Lacedaemonians.
§4.80.6οἱ μὲν οὖν παρὰ τῶν Σπαρτιατῶν Κρῆτες διὰ τῆς Μεσσηνίας εἰς τὴν οἰκείαν ἐπανῆλθον, οἱ δὲ περὶ τὸν Φιλλίδαν ἐποιοῦντο τὴν ἀπόλυσιν ὡς ἐπὶ τὸ Σαμικόν.
Now the Cretans sent by the Spartans returned to their own home through Messenia, while Philidas and his men made their departure towards Samicum.
τὸ δὲ τῶν Λεπρεατῶν πλῆθος, §4.80.7ἐγκρατὲς γεγονὸς τῆς πατρίδος, ἐξαπέστελλε πρεσβευτάς, ἐγχειρίζον τῷ Φιλίππῳ τὴν πόλιν.
But the multitude of the Lepreans, having gained control of their fatherland, sent ambassadors, surrendering the city to Philip.
§4.80.8ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς ἀκούσας τὰ γεγονότα, τὴν μὲν λοιπὴν δύναμιν εἰς τὸ Λέπρεον ἀπέστειλε, τοὺς δὲ πελταστὰς καὶ τοὺς εὐζώνους ἀναλαβὼν ἡγεῖτο, συνάψαι σπεύδων τοῖς περὶ τὸν Φιλλίδαν.
And the king, having heard of these events, sent the rest of his force to Lepreum, while taking the peltasts and the light-armed troops, he led them, hastening to catch up with Philidas and his men.
§4.80.9καταλαβὼν δὲ τῆς μὲν ἀποσκευῆς ἐγκρατὴς ἐγένετο πάσης, οἱ δὲ περὶ τὸν Φιλλίδαν κατετάχησαν εἰς τὸ Σαμικὸν παραπεσόντες.
Having overtaken them, he got possession of all their baggage, while Philidas and his men, making a hasty escape, threw themselves into Samicum.
§4.80.10προσστρατοπεδεύσας δὲ τῷ χωρίῳ, καὶ τὴν λοιπὴν ἐπισπασάμενος ἐκ τοῦ Λεπρέου δύναμιν, ἔμφασιν ἐποίει τοῖς ἔνδον ὡς πολιορκήσων τὸ χωρίον.
Encamping before the place, and having summoned the rest of his force from Lepreum, he made it clear to those inside that he was about to besiege the stronghold.
§4.80.11οἱ δʼ Αἰτωλοὶ μετὰ τῶν Ἠλείων οὐδὲν ἔχοντες ἕτοιμον πρὸς πολιορκίαν πλὴν χερῶν, καταπλαγέντες τὴν περίστασιν ἐλάλουν περὶ ἀσφαλείας πρὸς τὸν Φίλιππον.
And the Aetolians and Eleans, having nothing ready for a siege except their hands, and being terrified by the situation, began parleying with Philip for their safety.
§4.80.12λαβόντες δὲ συγχώρημα μετὰ τῶν ὅπλων ποιήσασθαι τὴν ἀπόλυσιν, οὗτοι μὲν ὥρμησαν εἰς τὴν Ἠλείαν· ὁ δὲ βασιλεὺς τοῦ μὲν Σαμικοῦ παραυτίκα κύριος ἐγένετο,
Having obtained permission to make their departure with their arms, these men set out for Elis; while the king immediately became master of Samicum.
§4.80.13μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα, παραγενομένων πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ τῶν ἄλλων μεθʼ ἱκετηρίας, παρέλαβε Φρίξαν, Στυλάγγιον, Αἴπιον, Βώλακα, Πύργον, Ἐπιτάλιον.
After this, when the others also came to him with supplications, he took over Phrixa, Stylangium, Aepium, Bolax, Pyrgos, and Epitalium.
§4.80.14ταῦτα δὲ διαπραξάμενος ἐπανῆλθε πάλιν εἰς τὸ Λέπρεον, πᾶσαν ὑφʼ ἑαυτὸν πεποιημένος τὴν Τριφυλίαν ἐν ἡμέραις ἕξ.
Having accomplished these things, he returned again to Lepreum, having brought the whole of Triphylia under his subjection in six days.
§4.80.15παρακαλέσας δὲ τοὺς Λεπρεάτας τὰ πρέποντα τῷ καιρῷ, καὶ φυλακὴν εἰσαγαγὼν εἰς τὴν ἄκραν, ἀνέζευξε μετὰ τῆς δυνάμεως ἐφʼ Ἡραίας, ἀπολιπὼν ἐπιμελητὴν τῆς Τριφυλίας Λάδικον τὸν Ἀκαρνᾶνα.
Having exhorted the Lepreans as was fitting for the occasion, and having introduced a garrison into the citadel, he marched off with his force towards Heraea, leaving Ladicus the Acarnanian as governor of Triphylia.
§4.80.16παραγενόμενος δʼ εἰς τὴν προειρημένην πόλιν τὴν μὲν λείαν διένειμε πᾶσαν, τὴν δʼ ἀποσκευὴν ἀναλαβὼν ἐκ τῆς Ἡραίας ἦλθε μέσου χειμῶνος εἰς Μεγάλην πόλιν.
Arriving at the aforesaid city, he distributed all the booty, and taking up his baggage, he went from Heraea in the middle of winter to Megalopolis.
