§10.27.1ἔστι τοίνυν ἡ Μηδία κατά τε τὸ μέγεθος τῆς χώρας ἀξιοχρεωτάτη τῶν κατὰ τὴν Ἀσίαν δυναστειῶν καὶ κατὰ τὸ πλῆθος καὶ κατὰ τὰς ἀρετὰς τῶν ἀνδρῶν, ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ τῶν ἵππων·
Now Media is, in terms of the size of its country, the most important of the principalities in Asia, as well as in terms of the multitude and the excellent qualities of its men, and likewise of its horses.
§10.27.2τοῖς γὰρ ζῴοις τούτοις σχεδὸν ἅπασαν χορηγεῖ τὴν Ἀσίαν τῷ καὶ τὰ βασιλικὰ συστήματα τῶν ἱπποτροφιῶν Μήδοις ἐπιτετράφθαι διὰ τὴν τῶν τόπων εὐφυΐαν.
For it supplies almost the whole of Asia with these animals, because the royal establishments of horse-breeding have been entrusted to the Medes on account of the natural suitability of the terrain.
§10.27.3περιοικεῖται δὲ πόλεσιν Ἑλληνίσι κατὰ τὴν ὑφήγησιν τὴν Ἀλεξάνδρου, φυλακῆς ἕνεκεν τῶν συγκυρούντων αὐτῇ βαρβάρων πλὴν Ἐκβατάνων.
And it is surrounded by Greek cities according to the direction of Alexander, for the sake of protection against the barbarians bordering on it, except for Ecbatana.
§10.27.4αὕτη δʼ ἔκτισται μὲν ἐν τοῖς πρὸς τὰς ἄρκτους μέρεσι τῆς Μηδίας, ἐπίκειται δὲ τοῖς περὶ τὴν Μαιῶτιν καὶ τὸν Εὔξεινον μέρεσι τῆς Ἀσίας,
This city is built in the northern parts of Media, and commands those parts of Asia around the Maeotis and the Euxine.
§10.27.5ἦν δὲ βασίλειον ἐξ ἀρχῆς Μήδων, πλούτῳ δὲ καὶ τῇ τῆς κατασκευῆς πολυτελείᾳ μέγα τι παρὰ τὰς ἄλλας δοκεῖ διενηνοχέναι πόλεις.
It was from the beginning the royal residence of the Medes, and in wealth and the costliness of its structure it seems to have far excelled all other cities.
§10.27.6κεῖται μὲν οὖν ὑπὸ τὴν παρώρειαν τὴν παρὰ τὸν Ὀρόντην, ἀτείχιστος οὖσα, ἄκραν δʼ ἐν αὑτῇ χειροποίητον ἔχει, θαυμασίως πρὸς ὀχυρότητα κατεσκευασμένην.
It lies under the skirt of the mountain range along the Orontes, being without walls, but it has within it a hand-made citadel, wonderfully constructed for security.
§10.27.7ὑπὸ δὲ ταύτην ἐστὶ βασίλεια, περὶ ὧν καὶ τὸ λέγειν κατὰ μέρος καὶ τὸ παρασιωπᾶν ἔχει τινʼ ἀπορίαν·
And below this is the palace, concerning which both speaking in detail and keeping silent present some difficulty.
§10.27.8τοῖς μὲν γὰρ αἱρουμένοις τὰς ἐκπληκτικὰς τῶν διηγήσεων προφέρεσθαι καὶ μετʼ αὐξήσεως ἔνια καὶ διαθέσεως εἰθισμένοις ἐξαγγέλλειν καλλίστην ὑπόθεσιν ἡ προειρημένη πόλις ἔχει, τοῖς δʼ εὐλαβῶς προσπορευομένοις πρὸς πᾶν τὸ παρὰ τὴν κοινὴν ἔννοιαν λεγόμενον ἀπορίαν παρασκευάζει καὶ δυσχρηστίαν.
For to those who choose to put forward startling accounts and are accustomed to report some things with exaggeration and dramatic arrangement, the aforementioned city offers an excellent subject, but to those who approach with caution everything that is said contrary to common belief, it causes difficulty and embarrassment.
§10.27.9πλὴν ἔστι γε τὰ βασίλεια τῷ μὲν μεγέθει σχεδὸν ἑπτὰ σταδίων ἔχοντα τὴν περιγραφήν, τῇ δὲ τῶν κατὰ μέρος κατασκευασμάτων πολυτελείᾳ μεγάλην ἐμφαίνοντα τὴν τῶν ἐξ ἀρχῆς καταβαλλομένων εὐκαιρίαν.
At any rate, the palace has a circumference of nearly seven stades in size, and by the costliness of its detailed structures, it displays the great wealth of those who laid its foundations at the beginning.
§10.27.10οὔσης γὰρ τῆς ξυλείας ἁπάσης κεδρίνης καὶ κυπαριττίνης, οὐδεμίαν αὐτῶν γεγυμνῶσθαι συνέβαινεν, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὰς δοκοὺς καὶ τὰ φατνώματα καὶ τοὺς κίονας τοὺς ἐν ταῖς στοαῖς καὶ περιστύλοις, τοὺς μὲν ἀργυραῖς, τοὺς δὲ χρυσαῖς λεπίσι περιειλῆφθαι, τὰς δὲ κεραμίδας ἀργυρᾶς εἶναι πάσας.
For as all the timber-work was of cedar and cypress, none of it happened to be left bare, but the beams, the coffered ceilings, and the columns in the porticoes and peristyles were covered, some with plates of silver and others of gold, and all the roof-tiles were of silver.
§10.27.11τούτων δὲ τὰ μὲν πλεῖστα συνέβη λεπισθῆναι κατὰ τὴν Ἀλεξάνδρου καὶ Μακεδόνων ἔφοδον, τὰ δὲ λοιπὰ κατὰ τὴν Ἀντιγόνου καὶ Σελεύκου τοῦ Νικάνορος δυναστείαν.
Most of these happened to be stripped during the invasion of Alexander and the Macedonians, and the rest during the reign of Antigonus and of Seleucus Nicator.
§10.27.12ὅμως δὲ κατὰ τὴν Ἀντιόχου παρουσίαν ὅ τε ναὸς αὐτὸς ὁ τῆς Αἴνης προσαγορευόμενος ἔτι τοὺς κίονας εἶχε τοὺς πέριξ κεχρυσωμένους, καὶ κεραμίδες ἀργυραῖ καὶ πλείους ἐν αὐτῷ συνετέθειντο, πλίνθοι δὲ χρυσαῖ τινες ὀλίγαι μὲν ἦσαν, ἀργυραῖ δὲ καὶ πλείους ὑπέμενον.
Nevertheless, at the time of Antiochus's arrival, the temple itself, called that of Aene, still had the columns around it gilded, and a good many silver tiles were piled up in it, while a few gold bricks and a larger number of silver ones still remained.
§10.27.13ἐκ δὲ πάντων τῶν προειρημένων τὸ χαραχθὲν εἰς τὸ βασιλικὸν ἡθροίσθη νόμισμα μικρῷ λεῖπον τετρακισχιλίων ταλάντων. —
And from all the aforementioned materials, the amount coined into royal money was collected, falling little short of four thousand talents.
