§19εἰ τοὺς μὲν οὐχ οἵους τε ὄντας ἐξάρνους εἶναι μὴ οὐ χρήματα ἔχειν ὑμῶν, τούτους μὲν ἀφεῖτε ἀνδρὶ ἐξαιτουμένῳ, ἡμῖν δὲ αὐτοῖς τε προθύμοις γεγενημένοις περὶ τὸ πλῆθος τὸ ὑμέτερον, καὶ τοῦ πατρὸς οὐδὲν ὑμᾶς ἠδικηκότος, οὐ χαριεῖσθε.
you acquit those who are unable to deny that they have your money, at the request of a man who begs them off, will you not show favor to us, who have ourselves been zealous for your democracy, and when our father has done you no wrong?
καὶ εἰ μὲν ξένος τις ἐλθὼν ὑμᾶς ἢ χρήματα ᾔτει ἢ εὐεργέτης ἀναγραφῆναι ἠξίου, ἔδοτε ἂν αὐτῷ· ἡμῖν δὲ οὐ δώσετε ἡμᾶς αὐτοὺς ἐπιτίμους ὑμῖν γενέσθαι; §20εἰ δέ τινες κακόνοι ἐγένοντο εἰς τὰ ὑμέτερα πράγματα ἢ γνώμην μὴ ἐπιτηδείαν εἶπον, οὐχ οἱ ἀπόντες τούτων αἴτιοί εἰσιν, ἐπεὶ καὶ τοὺς παρόντας ὑμεῖς ἀπελύσατε.
And if some foreigner came and asked you for money or claimed to be enrolled as a benefactor, you would have given it to him; but to us, will you not grant that we ourselves should retain our citizenship among you? if some have been ill-disposed toward your affairs or have expressed unsuitable opinions, those who were absent are not responsible for these things, since you acquitted even those who were present.
οὐδὲ γὰρ εἴ τις τῶν ἐνθάδε μὴ τὰ ἄριστα λέγων πείθει ὑμᾶς, οὐχ ὑμεῖς ἐστε αἴτιοι, §21ἀλλʼ ὁ ἐξαπατῶν ὑμᾶς.
For indeed, even if someone here, by not saying what is best, persuades you, you are not the ones responsible, the one who deceives you.
ἐκεῖνοι δὲ σφῶν αὐτῶν προκαταγνόντες ἀδικεῖν οἴχονται, ἵνα μὴ δοῖεν δίκην· καὶ εἴ τινες ἄλλοι ἀδικοῦσιν, ἧττον μὲν ἐκείνων, ἀδικοῦσι δέ, τὸ δέος αὐτοὺς ποιεῖ τό τε ὑμέτερον καὶ τὸ τῶν κατηγόρων μὴ ἐπιδημεῖν ἀλλὰ στρατεύεσθαι, ἵνα ἢ ὑμᾶς πραοτέρους ποιῶσιν ἢ τούτους πείθωσιν. §22οὗτος δὲ ὑμῖν δίκην δέδωκεν, οὐδὲν ὑμᾶς ἀδικῶν, εὐθὺς μετὰ τὰ πράγματα, ὅτε ὑμεῖς τε μάλιστα ἐμέμνησθε τῶν γενομένων καὶ οὗτος ἐλεγχθήσεσθαι ἔμελλε, πιστεύων αὑτῷ μηδὲν ἡμαρτῆσθαι ἀλλʼ ἀγωνιεῖσθαι εὖ μετὰ τοῦ δικαίου.
But those men, having condemned themselves beforehand of wrongdoing, have gone away so that they might not pay the penalty; and if any others do wrong, though less than those, yet they do wrong, their fear of you and of the accusers makes them not stay at home but serve in the army, in order that they may either make you more lenient or persuade these accusers. this man paid his penalty to you, having done you no wrong, immediately after the events, when you remembered best what had happened and he was going to be put to the test, trusting in himself that he had committed no error but would contend well with justice on his side.
ὡς δʼ ἦν δημοτικός, ἐγὼ ὑμῖν ἀποδείξω. §23πρῶτον μὲν γὰρ ὅσων οὐδεμιᾶς στρατείας ἀπελείφθη, ἀλλʼ ἐστρατεύετο, ὡς συνειδότες ἂν εἴποιεν οἱ δημόται· καὶ ἐξὸν αὐτῷ τὴν οὐσίαν ἀφανῆ καταστήσαντι μηδὲν ὑμᾶς ὠφελεῖν, εἵλετο μᾶλλον συνειδέναι ὑμᾶς, ἵνʼ εἰ καὶ βούλοιτο κακὸς εἶναι, μὴ ἐξείη αὐτῷ, ἀλλʼ εἰσφέροι τε τὰς εἰσφορὰς καὶ λῃτουργοίη.
And how democratic he was, I will demonstrate to you. first of all, as for all the campaigns from which he was not exempt, he served in them, as his fellow demesmen would say from their own knowledge; and when it was possible for him to make his property invisible and render you no service, he chose rather that you should be aware of it, so that even if he wished to be a bad citizen, it might not be possible for him, but that he might pay the war taxes and perform public services.
καὶ ἡμᾶς παρεσκεύασεν, ὡς ἂν τῇ πόλει ὠφελιμώτατοι εἴημεν. §24καὶ ἐμὲ μὲν εἰς Σικελίαν ἐξέπεμψεν, ὑμῖν δʼ οὐκ ἦ, ὥστʼ εἰδέναι τοὺς ἱππέας, οἷος ἦ τὴν ψυχήν, ἕως τὸ στρατόπεδον σῶν ἦν· ἐπειδὴ δὲ διεφθάρη καὶ ἀνεσώθην εἰς Κατάνην, ἐλῃζόμην ὁρμώμενος ἐντεῦθεν καὶ τοὺς πολεμίους κακῶς ἐποίουν, ὥστε τῇ θεῷ τε τὰς δεκάτας ἐξαιρεθῆναι πλέον ἢ τριάκοντα μνᾶς καὶ τοῖς στρατιώταις εἰς σωτηρίαν ὅσοι ἐν τοῖς πολεμίοις ἦσαν. §25καὶ ἐπειδὴ Καταναῖοι ἠνάγκαζον ἱππεύειν, ἵππευον καὶ οὐδενὸς οὐδʼ ἐνταῦθα κινδύνου ἀπελειπόμην, ὥστʼ εἰδέναι ἅπαντας οἷος ἦν τὴν ψυχὴν ἱππεύων τε καὶ ὁπλιτεύων.

ἀκηκόατε μὲν τῶν μαρτύρων, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί· οἷος δʼ εἰμὶ περὶ τὸ ὑμέτερον πλῆθος, ἐγὼ ὑμῖν ἀποδείξω.
Of these things I will provide you with the witnesses. You have heard the witnesses, gentlemen of the jury; and of what character I am toward your democracy, I will demonstrate to you.
ἀφικομένου γὰρ ἐκεῖσε Συρακουσίου ὅρκιον ἔχοντος καὶ ἑτοίμου ὄντος ὁρκοῦν καὶ προσιόντος πρὸς ἕνα ἕκαστον τῶν ἐκεῖ ὄντων, ἀντεῖπον εὐθὺς αὐτῷ, καὶ ἐλθὼν ὡς Τυδέα διηγούμην ταῦτα, καὶ σύλλογον ἐποίει, καὶ λόγοι οὐκ ὀλίγοι ἦσαν.
For when a Syracusan arrived there with a treaty and was ready to administer the oath, and approached each single one of those who were there, I immediately opposed him, and going to Tydeus I related these things, and he called an assembly, and there were not a few speeches.

σκέψασθε δὴ καὶ τοῦ πατρὸς τὴν ἐπιστολήν, ἣν ἔδωκεν ἀποδοῦναι ἐμοί, πότερα τῷ ὑμετέρῳ πλήθει ἀγαθὰ ἐνῆν ἢ οὔ.
Of the things indeed that I said, I call witnesses. Consider indeed also my father's letter, which he gave to be delivered to me, whether there was good in it for your democracy or not.
τά τε γὰρ οἰκεῖα ἐνεγέγραπτο, καὶ ἔτι, ὅτε καλῶς ἔχοι τὰ ἐν Σικελίᾳ, ἥκειν.
For both our family affairs were written in it, and further, that I should return when things in Sicily were in a good state.
καίτοι ταὐτὰ ὑμῖν συνέφερε καὶ τοῖς ἐκεῖ· ὥστʼ εἰ μὴ εὔνους ἦν τῇ πόλει καὶ ὑμῖν, οὐκ ἄν ποτε τοιαῦτα ἐπέστελλεν. §28ἀλλὰ μὴν καὶ τὸν ἀδελφὸν τὸν νεώτατον, οἷος εἰς ὑμᾶς ἐστιν, ἐγὼ ἀποδείξω.
And yet the same things were advantageous to you and to those there; so that if he were not well-disposed to the city and to you, he would never have sent such instructions., also of my youngest brother, what kind of person he is toward you, I will demonstrate.
καταδρομῆς γὰρ γενομένης τῶν φυγάδων, οἳ οὐ μόνον ἐνθάδε ὅ τι οἷοι τʼ ἦσαν κακὸν εἰργάζοντο, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀπὸ τοῦ τείχους ἔφερον καὶ ἦγον ὑμᾶς, ἐξελάσας ἐκ τῶν ἄλλων ἱππέων ἕνα ἀπέκτεινεν.
For when an incursion was made by the exiles, who not only did whatever evil they could here, but also plundered and carried you off from the fort, he, riding out from the other cavalry, killed one of them.
ὧν ὑμῖν αὐτοὺς μάρτυρας τοὺς παραγενομένους παρέξομαι.
