§11>καίτοι ἔν γε ταῖς πρότερον κατηγορίαις τά τε ἄλλα κατηγόρησαν ψευδῆ τοῦ πατρός, καὶ συγγενῆ Φρύνιχον αὐτοῦ εἶναι ἔφησαν.
yet, in their previous accusations, they both made other false charges against my father and asserted that Phrynichus was his kinsman.
καίτοι εἴ τις βούλεται, ἐν τῷ λόγῳ τῷ ἐμῷ μαρτυρησάτω ὡς ἀναγκαῖον ὄντα Φρυνίχῳ.
Yet, if anyone wishes, let him testify in my speech that he was a relative to Phrynichus.
ἀλλὰ γὰρ ψευδῆ κατηγόρουν.
But indeed they were making false accusations.
ἀλλὰ μὴν οὐδʼ ἐκ παιδείας φίλος ἦν αὐτῷ· ὁ μὲν γὰρ ἐν ἀγρῷ πένης ὢν ἐποίμαινεν, ὁ δὲ πατὴρ ἐν τῷ ἄστει ἐπαιδεύετο. §12καὶ ἐπειδὴ ἀνὴρ ἐγένετο, ὁ μὲν ἐγεώργει, ὁ δʼ ἐλθὼν εἰς τὸ ἄστυ ἐσυκοφάντει, ὥστε μηδὲν ὁμολογεῖν τῷ τρόπῳ ἀλλήλων.
Furthermore, he was not even his friend from childhood; for the one was poor in the country and kept sheep, while my father was educated in the city. when they became men, the one farmed, while the other went to the city and became a sycophant, so that their characters agreed in nothing with each other.
καὶ ὅτʼ ἐξέτινε τῷ δημοσίῳ, οὐκ εἰσήνεγκεν αὐτῷ τὸ ἀργύριον· καίτοι ἐν τοῖς τοιούτοις μάλιστα δηλοῦσιν οἳ ἂν φίλοι ὦσιν.
And when he paid his fine to the treasury, my father did not contribute money for him; and yet it is in such situations that those who are friends make it most clear.
εἰ δʼ ἦν δημότης, οὐ δίκαιος διὰ τοῦτο βλάπτεσθαί ἐστιν ὁ πατήρ, §13εἰ μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀδικεῖτε, ὅτι ὑμῶν ἐστι πολίτης.
But even if he was his fellow demesman, it is not just that my father should be harmed on this account, you too are doing wrong, because he is your citizen.
πῶς δʼ ἂν γένοιτο δημοτικώτερος, ἢ ὅστις ὑμῶν ψηφισαμένων πεντακισχιλίοις παραδοῦναι τὰ πράγματα καταλογεὺς ὢν ἐνακισχιλίους κατέλεξεν, ἵνα μηδεὶς αὐτῷ διάφορος εἴη τῶν δημοτῶν, ἀλλʼ ἵνα τὸν μὲν βουλόμενον ἐγγράφοι, εἰ δέ τῳ μὴ οἷόν τʼ εἴη, χαρίζοιτο.
And how could anyone be more democratic than he, who, when you voted to hand over the government to five thousand, being a registrar, enrolled nine thousand, so that none of his fellow demesmen might be at variance with him, but rather that he might enroll anyone who wished, and if it were not possible for someone, he might do him a favor?
καίτοι οὐχ οἳ ἂν πλείους τοὺς πολίτας ποιῶσιν, οὗτοι καταλύουσι τὸν δῆμον, ἀλλʼ οἳ ἂν ἐκ πλειόνων ἐλάττους.
And yet it is not those who make the citizens more numerous who overthrow the democracy, but those who make them fewer from a larger number.
οὗτος δὲ οὔτε ὀμόσαι ἤθελεν οὔτε καταλέγειν, §14ἀλλʼ αὐτὸν ἠνάγκαζον, ἐπιβολὰς ἐπιβάλλοντες καὶ ζημιοῦντες·
But this man wished neither to take the oath nor to make the enrollment, they compelled him, imposing fines and punishing him.
ἐπεὶ δὲ ἠναγκάσθη καὶ ὤμοσε τὸν ὅρκον, ὀκτὼ ἡμέρας εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὸ βουλευτήριον ἐξέπλει εἰς Ἐρέτριαν, καὶ ἐδόκει ἐκεῖ τὴν ψυχὴν οὐ πονηρὸς εἶναι ἐν ταῖς ναυμαχίαις, καὶ τετρωμένος δεῦρʼ ἦλθε, καὶ ἤδη μετεπεπτώκει τὰ πράγματα.
And when he was compelled and took the oath, having entered the council chamber for eight days, he sailed out to Eretria, and there he showed himself not to be of a cowardly spirit in the sea fights, and he came back here wounded, and by then the government had already changed.
καὶ οὗτος μὲν οὔτʼ εἰπὼν γνώμην οὐδεμίαν, οὔτε πλέον ὀκτὼ ἡμερῶν ἐλθὼν εἰς τὸ βουλευτήριον ὦφλε χρήματα τοσαῦτα· τῶν δʼ εἰπόντων ὑμῖν τἀναντία καὶ διὰ τέλους ἐν τῷ βουλευτηρίῳ ὄντων πολλοὶ ἀποπεφεύγασι. §15καὶ οὐ φθονῶν τούτοις λέγω, ἀλλʼ ἡμᾶς ἐλεῶν· οἱ μὲν γὰρ δοκοῦντες ἀδικεῖν ἐξῃτημένοι εἰσὶν ὑπὸ τῶν ὑμῖν προθύμων ἐν τοῖς πράγμασι γενομένων, οἱ δʼ ἠδικηκότες ἐκπριάμενοι τοὺς κατηγόρους οὐδʼ ἔδοξαν ἀδικεῖν.
And while this man, without having proposed any motion and without having entered the council chamber for more than eight days, was fined so much money; many of those who spoke against you and remained in the council chamber to the end have been acquitted. I say this not because I envy them, but because I pity us; for those who were thought to do wrong have been begged off by those who were zealous on your behalf in public affairs, while those who had actually done wrong, by buying off the accusers, were not even thought to do wrong.
πῶς οὖν οὐκ ἂν δεινὰ πάσχοιμεν; §16καὶ κατηγοροῦσι μὲν τῶν τετρακοσίων, ὅτι ἦσαν κακοί· καίτοι ὑμεῖς αὐτοὶ πεισθέντες ὑπὸ τούτων παρέδοτε τοῖς πεντακισχιλίοις, καὶ εἰ αὐτοὶ τοσοῦτοι ὄντες ἐπείσθητε, ἕνα ἕκαστον τῶν τετρακοσίων οὐ χρῆν πεισθῆναι;
How then should we not suffer a terrible fate? also accuse the Four Hundred of being wicked; yet you yourselves, being persuaded by them, handed over the government to the five thousand, and if you yourselves, being so many, were persuaded, was it not bound to happen that each single one of the Four Hundred was persuaded?
ἀλλʼ οὐχ οὗτοι ἀδικοῦσιν, ἀλλʼ οἳ ὑμᾶς ἐξηπάτων καὶ κακῶς ἐποίουν.
But it is not these who do wrong, but those who deceived you and did you harm.
οὗτος δʼ ἐν πολλοῖς δηλοῖ ὑμῖν εὐνοῶν καὶ ὅτι, εἴ πέρ τι νεωτερίζειν ἐβούλετο εἰς τὸ ὑμέτερον πλῆθος, οὐκ ἄν ποτʼ ἐν ὀκτὼ ἡμέραις, εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὸ βουλευτήριον, §17ᾤχετο ἐκπλέων.
And this man shows in many things that he is well-disposed to you, and that, if indeed he wished to make any revolution against your democracy, he would never, after entering the council chamber for eight days, gone away by sailing out.
ἀλλʼ εἴποι ἄν τις κερδαίνειν ἐπιθυμῶν ἐξέπλευσεν, ὥσπερ ἔνιοι ἥρπαζον καὶ ἔφερον.
But someone might say that he sailed out wishing to make a profit, just as some were plundering and carrying off booty.
οὐδεὶς τοίνυν ἂν εἴποι τι ὅπως τῶν ὑμετέρων ἔχει, ἀλλὰ πάντα μᾶλλον κατηγοροῦσιν ἢ εἰς τὴν ἀρχήν.
No one, however, can point to his holding any of your property, but they accuse him of everything rather than anything regarding his office.
καὶ οἱ κατήγοροι τότε μὲν οὐδαμῇ εὖνοι ὄντες ἐφαίνοντο τῷ δήμῳ οὐδὲ ἐβοήθουν· νῦν δὲ ἡνίκα αὐτὸς ἑαυτῷ εὐνούστατός ἐστιν ὁ δῆμος, βοηθοῦσι τῷ μὲν ὀνόματι ὑμῖν, §18τῷ δὲ ἔργω σφίσιν αὐτοῖς.
And the accusers at that time showed themselves in no way well-disposed to the democracy, nor did they help it; but now, when the democracy is most well-disposed to itself, they help you in name indeed, in deed they help themselves.
καὶ μὴ θαυμάζετε, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί, ὅτι τοσαῦτα ὦφλε χρήματα.
And do not wonder, gentlemen of the jury, that he was fined so much money.
ἔρημον γὰρ αὐτὸν λαβόντες αὐτοῦ τε καὶ ἡμῶν κατηγοροῦντες εἷλον.
For they took him when he was defenseless, and won their case by accusing both him and us.
τῷ μὲν γὰρ οὐδʼ εἴ τις εἶχε μαρτυρίαν, εἶχε μαρτυρεῖν διὰ τὸ δέος τὸ τῶν κατηγόρων, τοῖς δὲ καὶ τὰ ψευδῆ δεδοικότες ἐμαρτύρουν.
For on his side, even if anyone had evidence, he was unable to testify because of the fear of the accusers, while on their side, people testified even to falsehoods because they were afraid.
ἦ δεινά γʼ ἂν πάθοιμεν, ὦ ἄνδρες δικασταί,
We should indeed suffer a terrible fate, gentlemen of the jury,
