§12εἰσαρπάσειαν αὐτόν.
so that they might kidnap him.
ἐν δὲ τούτῳ τῷ καιρῷ ἀφικνοῦμαι ἐγὼ ἐκ Πειραιῶς, καὶ τρέπομαι παριὼν ὡς τὸν Λυσίμαχον· ὀλίγον δὲ χρόνον διατρίψαντες ἐξερχόμεθα.
And at this moment, I arrived from Piraeus, and turned aside as I passed by to the house of Lysimachus; and having spent a short time there, we came out.
οὗτοι δʼ ἤδη μεθύοντες ἐκπηδῶσιν ἐφʼ ἡμᾶς καὶ οἱ μέν τινες αὐτῷ τῶν παραγενομένων οὐκ ἠθέλησαν συνεξαμαρτεῖν, Σίμων δὲ οὑτοσὶ καὶ Θεόφιλος καὶ Πρώταρχος καὶ Αὐτοκλῆς εἷλκον τὸ μειράκιον.
But these men, already drunk, leaped out upon us; and while some of those present with him refused to join in their wrongdoing, this Simon here, along with Theophilus, Protarchus, and Autocles, began to drag the youth away.
ὁ δὲ ῥίψας τὸ ἱμάτιον ᾤχετο φεύγων.
But he, throwing off his cloak, fled and escaped.
§13ἐγὼ δὲ ἡγούμενος ἐκεῖνον μὲν ἐκφεύξεσθαι, τούτους δʼ, ἐπειδὴ τάχιστα ἐντύχοιεν ἀνθρώποις, αἰσχυνομένους ἀποτρέψεσθαι — ταῦτα διανοηθεὶς ἑτέραν ὁδὸν ᾠχόμην ἀπιών·
I, thinking that he would escape, and that these men, as soon as they met with other people, would turn back out of shame—having reasoned in this way, I went off by another road.
οὕτω σφόδρʼ αὐτοὺς ἐφυλαττόμην, καὶ πάντα τὰ ὑπὸ τούτων γιγνόμενα μεγάλην ἐμαυτῷ συμφορὰν ἐνόμιζον.
So carefully did I guard against them, and I considered everything that was done by them to be a great misfortune for myself.
§14κἀνταῦθα μέν, ἵνα φησὶ Σίμων τὴν μάχην γενέσθαι, οὔτε τούτων οὔτε ἡμῶν οὐδεὶς οὔτε κατεάγη τὴν κεφαλὴν οὔτε ἄλλο κακὸν οὐδὲν ἔλαβεν, ὧν ἐγὼ τοὺς παραγενομένους ὑμῖν παρέξομαι μάρτυρας.
And there, where Simon says the battle took place, no one either of their party or of ours had his head broken or suffered any other harm; and concerning these matters, I will provide those who were present as witnesses to you.
§15Μάρτυρες
ὅτι μὲν τοίνυν οὗτος ἦν ὁ ἀδικήσας, ὦ βουλή, καὶ ἐπιβουλεύσας ἡμῖν, καὶ οὐκ ἐγὼ τούτῳ, ὑπὸ τῶν παραγενομένων μεμαρτύρηται ὑμῖν.
Witnesses That he, therefore, members of the Council, was the one who did the wrong and plotted against us, and not I against him, has been testified to you by those who were present.
μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα τὸ μὲν μειράκιον εἰς γναφεῖον κατέφυγεν, οὗτοι δὲ συνεισπεσόντες ἦγον αὐτὸν βίᾳ, βοῶντα καὶ κεκραγότα καὶ μαρτυρόμενον.
After this, the youth fled into a fuller's shop, but these men, bursting in with him, began to drag him away by force, while he was shouting and screaming and calling people to witness.
§16συνδραμόντων δὲ ἀνθρώπων πολλῶν καὶ ἀγανακτούντων τῷ πράγματι καὶ δεινὰ φασκόντων εἶναι τὰ γιγνόμενα, τῶν μὲν λεγομένων οὐδὲν ἐφρόντιζον, Μόλωνα δὲ τὸν γναφέα καὶ ἄλλους τινὰς ἐπαμύνειν ἐπιχειροῦντας συνέκοψαν.
And though many people ran together and were indignant at the deed, saying that what was happening was terrible, they cared nothing for what was said, but beat Molon the fuller and some others who attempted to defend him.
§17ἤδη δὲ αὐτοῖς οὖσι παρὰ τὴν Λάμπωνος οἰκίαν ἐγὼ μόνος βαδίζων ἐντυγχάνω, δεινὸν δὲ ἡγησάμενος εἶναι καὶ αἰσχρὸν περιιδεῖν οὕτως ἀνόμως καὶ βιαίως ὑβρισθέντα τὸν νεανίσκον, ἐπιλαμβάνομαι αὐτοῦ.
But when they were already near Lampon's house, I, walking alone, happened upon them; and thinking it a terrible and shameful thing to overlook the youth being so lawlessly and violently outraged, I laid hold of him.
οὗτοι δέ, διότι μὲν τοιαῦτα παρενόμουν εἰς ἐκεῖνον, οὐκ ἠθέλησαν εἰπεῖν ἐρωτηθέντες, ἀφέμενοι δὲ τοῦ νεανίσκου ἔτυπτον ἐμέ.
But they, when asked, refused to say why they were committing such lawless acts against him, but letting go of the youth, began to beat me.
μάχης δὲ γενομένης, §18ὦ βουλή, καὶ τοῦ μειρακίου βάλλοντος αὐτοὺς καὶ περὶ τοῦ σώματος ἀμυνομένου καὶ τούτων ἡμᾶς βαλλόντων, ἔτι δὲ τυπτόντων αὐτὸν ὑπὸ τῆς μέθης καὶ ἐμοῦ ἀμυνομένου, καὶ τῶν παραγενομένων ὡς ἀδικουμένοις ἡμῖν ἁπάντων ἐπικουρούντων, ἐν τούτῳ τῷ θορύβῳ συντριβόμεθα τὰς κεφαλὰς ἅπαντες.
A battle having ensued, members of the Council, with the youth pelting them and defending his person, and these men pelting us, and still beating him because of their drunkenness, and me defending myself, and all those present helping us as the injured party, in this confusion we all had our heads broken.
§19καὶ οἱ μὲν ἄλλοι οἱ μετὰ τούτου παροινήσαντες, ἐπειδὴ τάχιστά με εἶδον μετὰ ταῦτα, ἐδέοντό μου συγγνώμην ἔχειν, οὐχ ὡς ἀδικούμενοι ἀλλʼ ὡς δεινὰ πεποιηκότες· καὶ ἐξ ἐκείνου τοῦ χρόνου τεττάρων ἐτῶν παρεληλυθότων οὐδέν μοι πώποτε ἐνεκάλεσεν οὐδείς.
And the others who had joined in the drunken outrage with him, as soon as they saw me after these events, begged me to forgive them, not as if they were the injured party, but as having done terrible things; and since that time, four years having passed, no one has ever brought any charge against me.
§20Σίμων δʼ οὑτοσί, πάντων τῶν κακῶν αἴτιος γενόμενος, τὸν μὲν ἄλλον χρόνον ἡσυχίαν ἦγε δεδιὼς περὶ αὑτοῦ, ἐπειδὴ δὲ δίκας ἰδίας ᾔσθετο κακῶς ἀγωνισάμενον ἐξ ἀντιδόσεως, καταφρονήσας μου οὑτωσὶ τολμηρῶς εἰς τοιοῦτον ἀγῶνά με κατέστησεν.
But this Simon here, who was the cause of all the evils, kept quiet for the rest of the time, fearing for himself; but when he perceived that I had fared badly in private lawsuits resulting from a property-exchange, despising me, he boldly brought me into a trial of this kind.
ὡς οὖν καὶ ταῦτʼ ἀληθῆ λέγω, τούτων ὑμῖν τοὺς παραγενομένους μάρτυρας παρέξομαι.
To prove that I speak the truth in this also, I will provide those who were present as witnesses to you.
§21Μάρτυρες
τὰ μὲν οὖν γεγενημένα καὶ ἐμοῦ καὶ τῶν μαρτύρων ἀκηκόατε·
Witnesses What happened, then, you have heard both from me and from the witnesses.
ἐβουλόμην δʼ ἄν, ὦ βουλή, Σίμωνα τὴν αὐτὴν γνώμην ἐμοὶ ἔχειν, ἵνʼ ἀμφοτέρων ἡμῶν ἀκούσαντες τἀληθῆ ῥᾳδίως ἔγνωτε τὰ δίκαια.
And I could wish, members of the Council, that Simon had the same mind as I, so that having heard the truth from both of us, you might easily have decided what was just.
ἐπειδὴ δὲ αὐτῷ οὐδὲν μέλει τῶν ὅρκων ὧν ὠμόσατο, πειράσομαι καὶ περὶ ὧν οὗτος ἔψευσται διδάσκειν ὑμᾶς.
But since he cares nothing for the oaths he swore, I will also try to instruct you concerning the lies he has told.
§22ἐτόλμησε γὰρ εἰπεῖν ὡς αὐτὸς μὲν τριακοσίας δραχμὰς ἔδωκε Θεοδότῳ, συνθήκας πρὸς αὐτὸν ποιησάμενος, ἐγὼ δʼ ἐπιβουλεύσας ἀπέστησα αὐτοῦ τὸ μειράκιον.
For he dared to say that he himself had given three hundred drachmas to Theodotus, having made a contract with him, and that I, by plotting, seduced the youth from him.
καίτοι ἐχρῆν αὐτόν, εἴπερ ἦν ταῦτʼ ἀληθῆ, παρακαλέσαντα μάρτυρας ὡς πλείστους κατὰ τοὺς νόμους διαπράττεσθαι περὶ αὐτῶν.
Yet he ought, if indeed these things were true, to have summoned as many witnesses as possible and to have settled the matter according to the laws.
§23οὗτος δὲ τοιοῦτον οὐδὲν πώποτε φαίνεται ποιήσας, ὑβρίζων δὲ καὶ τύπτων ἀμφοτέρους ἡμᾶς καὶ κωμάζων καὶ τὰς θύρας ἐκβάλλων καὶ νύκτωρ εἰσιὼν ἐπὶ γυναῖκας ἐλευθέρας.
But he is shown never to have done any such thing, but to have outraged and beaten both of us, and to have gone on revels, broken open doors, and entered by night to free women.
ἃ χρὴ μάλιστα, ὦ βουλή, τεκμήρια νομίζειν ὅτι ψεύδεται πρὸς ὑμᾶς.
These things, members of the Council, you must consider to be the greatest proofs that he is lying to you.
§24σκέψασθε δὲ ὡς ἄπιστα εἴρηκε.
And consider how incredible his statements are.
τὴν γὰρ οὐσίαν τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἅπασαν πεντήκοντα καὶ διακοσίων δραχμῶν ἐτιμήσατο.
For he estimated his entire property at two hundred and fifty drachmas.
καίτοι θαυμαστὸν εἰ τὸν ἑταιρήσοντα πλειόνων ἐμισθώσατο ὧν αὐτὸς τυγχάνει κεκτημένος.
Yet it is astonishing if he hired the companion for more than he himself happens to possess.
§25εἰς τοῦτο δʼ ἥκει τόλμης ὥστε οὐκ ἐξαρκεῖ περὶ τούτου μόνον αὐτῷ ψεύσασθαι, περὶ τοῦ δεδωκέναι τὸ ἀργύριον, ἀλλὰ καὶ κεκομίσθαι φησί·
And he has reached such a pitch of audacity that it does not suffice for him to lie about this alone, concerning his having given the money, but he also says that he has recovered it.
καίτοι πῶς εἰκός ἐστι τότε μὲν ἡμᾶς τοιαῦτα ἐξαμαρτάνειν οἷα κατηγόρηκεν οὗτος, ἀποστερῆσαι βουλομένους τὰς τριακοσίας δραχμάς, ἐπειδὴ δὲ ἀπεμαχεσάμεθα, τηνικαῦτα ἀποδοῦναι τὸ ἀργύριον αὐτῷ, μήτε ἀφειμένους τῶν ἐγκλημάτων μήτε ἀνάγκης ἡμῖν μηδεμιᾶς γενομένης;
Yet how is it likely that at that time we committed such offenses as he has charged, wishing to deprive him of the three hundred drachmas, but when we had fought it out, we then returned the money to him, without being released from the charges and with no necessity having come upon us?
