§1.36οἱ δὲ δύο πρεσβύτεροι εἶπαν Ἡμεῖς περιεπατοῦμεν ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς αὐτῆς, §1.37καὶ κυκλοῦντες τὸ στάδιον εἵδομεν ταύτην ἀναπαυομένην μετὰ ἀνδρός, καὶ στάντες ἐθεωροῦμεν αὐτοὺς ὁμιλοῦντας ἀλλήλοις,
And the two elders said, "We were walking in her husband's garden, and as we were circling the stadium, we saw this woman resting with a man; and standing there, we watched them conversing with each other.
§1.38καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐκ ἤδεισαν ὅτι εἱστήκειμεν.
And they did not know that we were standing there.
τότε συνειπάμεθα ἀλλήλοις λέγοντες Μάθωμεν τίνες εἰσὶν οὗτοι. §1.39καὶ προσελθόντες ἐπέγνωμεν αὐτὴν· ὁ δὲ νεανίσκος ἔφυγε συγκεκαλυμμένος.
Then we agreed with each other, saying, 'Let us find out who they are.' And coming closer, we recognized her, but the young man covered himself and fled.
And laying hold of her, we asked her, 'Who is the man?' But she did not report to us who he was.
ταῦτα μαρτυροῦμεν. καὶ ἐπίστευσεν αὐτοῖς ἡ συναγωγὴ πᾶσα, ὡς πρεσβυτέρων ὄντων καὶ κριτῶν τοῦ λαοῦ.
These things we testify." And the whole assembly believed them, since they were elders and judges of the people.
§1.44–45 Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄγγελος Κυρίου, ἐκείνης ἐξαγομένης ἀπολέσθαι· καὶ ἔδωκεν ὁ ἄγγελος, καθὼς προσετάγη, πνεῦμα συνέσεως νεωτερῶ ὄντι Δανιὴλ.
–45 And behold, an angel of the Lord [appeared] as she was being led away to perish; and the angel gave, as he was commanded, a spirit of understanding to Daniel, who was still young.
§1.48διαστείλας δὲ Δανιὴλ τὸν ὄχλον καὶ στὰς ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῶν εἶπεν Οὕτως μωροί, υἱοὶ Ἰσραήλ;
And Daniel, having parted the crowd and standing in their midst, said, "Are you so foolish, O sons of Israel?
οὐκ ἀνακρίναντες οὐδὲ τὸ σαφές ἐπιγνόντες ἀπεκτείνατε θυγατέρα Ἰσραήλ; §1.51καὶ νῦν διαχωρίσατέ μοι αὐτοὺς ἀπʼ ἀλλήλων μακράν, ἵνα ἐτάσω αὐτούς. §1.51aa ὡς δὲ διεχωρίσθησαν, εἶπεν Δανιὴλ τῇ συναγωγῇ Νῦν μὴ βλέψητε ὅτι οὗτοί εἰσι πρεσβύτεροι, λέγοντες Οὐ μὴ ψεύσωνται· ἀλλὰ ἀνακρινῶ αὐτοὺς κατὰ τὰ ὑποπίπτοντά μοι. §1.52καὶ ἐκάλεσε τὸν ἕνα αὐτῶν, καὶ προσήγαγον τὸν πρεσβύτερον τῷ νεωτέρῳ· καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Δανιὴλ Ἅκουε ἄκουε, πεπαλαιωμένε ἡμερῶν κακῶν· νῦν ἥκασί σου αἱ ἁμαρτίαι ἃς ἐποίεις τὸ πρότερον, §1.53πιστευθεὶς ἀκούειν καὶ κρίνειν κρίσεις θάνατον ἐπιφερούσας, καὶ τὸν μέν ἀθῷον κατέκρινας, τοὺς δὲ ἐνόχους ἠφίεις, τοῦ κυρίου λέγοντος Ἀθῷον καὶ δίκαιον οὐκ ἀποκτενεῖς. §1.54νῦν οὖν ὑπὸ τί δένδρον καὶ ποταπῷ τοῦ παραδείσου τόπῳ ἑώρακας αὐτοὺς ὄντας σὺν ἑαυτοῖς; καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἀσεβής ῾ γπὸ σχῖνον. §1.55εἶπεν δὲ ὁ νεώτερος Ὀρθῶς ἔψευσαι εἰς τὴν σεαυτοῦ ψυχήν· ὁ γὰρ ἄγγελος Κυρίου σχίσει σου τὴν ψυχὴν σήμερον. §1.56καὶ τοῦτον μεταστήσας εἶπεν προσαγαγεῖν αὐτῷ τὸν ἕτερον·
Without cross-examining or finding out the clear truth, have you condemned a daughter of Israel to death?" "And now separate them far from each other, so that I may examine them." a And when they were separated, Daniel said to the assembly, "Now do not look at the fact that these men are elders, saying, 'They surely will not lie'; but I will examine them according to what occurs to me." And he called one of them, and they brought the elder to the youth; and Daniel said to him, "Listen, listen, you who have grown old in evil days; now your sins have come upon you, which you committed before, having been trusted to hear and judge cases bringing death, and indeed you condemned the innocent and acquitted the guilty, though the Lord says, 'You shall not kill the innocent and righteous.' Now then, under what tree and in what place of the garden did you see them being together?" And the impious man said, "Under a mastic tree." And the youth said, "Rightly have you lied against your own soul; for the angel of the Lord will cut your soul in two today." And having removed him, he ordered the other to be brought to him.
καὶ τούτῳ δὲ εἶπεν Διὰ τί διεστραμμένον τὸ σπέρμα σου, ὡς Σιδῶνος καὶ οὐχ ὡς Ἰούδα;
And to him he said, "Why is your offspring perverted, like that of Sidon and not of Judah?
τὸ κάλλος σε ἠπάτησεν, ἡ μικρὰ ἐπιθυμία.
Beauty has deceived you, and a petty desire [has perverted you].
§1.57καὶ οὕτως ἐποιεῖτε θυγατράσιν Ἰσραήλ, καὶ ἐκεῖναι φοβούμεναι ὡμιλοῦσαν ὑμῖν· ἀλλʼ οὐ θυγάτηρ Ἰούδα ὑπέμεινε τὴν νόσον ὑμῶν ἐν ἀνομίᾳ ὑπενεγκεῖν.
Thus you did to the daughters of Israel, and they, being afraid, associated with you; but a daughter of Judah did not endure to submit to your lawless disease.
§1.58νῦν οὖν λέγε μοι ῾ γπὸ ὸ τί δένδρον καὶ ἐν ποίῳ τοῦ κήπου τόπῳ κατέλαβες αὐτοὺς ὁμιλοῦντας ἀλλήλοις; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ῾ γπὸ πρῖνον. §1.59καὶ εἶπεν Δανιὴλ Ἁμαρτωλέ, νῦν ὁ ἄγγελος Κυρίου τὴν ῥομφαίαν ἕστηκεν ἔχων, ἕως ὁ λαὸς ἐξολεθρεύσει ὑμᾶς, ἵνα καταπρίσῃ σε. §1.60–62 Καὶ πᾶσα ἡ συναγωγὴ ἀνεβόησεν ἐπὶ τῷ νεωτέρῳ, ὡς ἐκ τοῦ ἰδίου στόματος ὁμολόγους αὐτοὺς κατέστησεν ἀμφοτέρους ψευδομάρτυρας· καὶ ὡς ὁ νόμος διαγορεύει ἐποίησαν αὐτοῖς, καθὼς ἐπονηρεύσαντο κατὰ τῆς ἀδελφῆς.
Now then, tell me, under what tree and in what place of the garden did you catch them conversing with each other?" And he said, "Under a holm oak." And Daniel said, "Sinner, now the angel of the Lord stands holding a sword, waiting until the people shall utterly destroy you, in order to saw you in two." –62 And the whole assembly cried out against the youth, because he had established both of them as self-confessed false witnesses from their own mouths; and they did to them as the law prescribes, just as they had maliciously plotted against their sister.
καὶ ἐφίμωσαν αὐτοὺς καὶ ἐξαγαγόντες ἔρριψαν εἰς φάραγγα· τότε ὁ ἅγγελος Κυρίου ἔρριψε πῦρ διὰ μέσου αὐτῶν.
And they gagged them and, leading them out, threw them into a chasm; then the angel of the Lord threw fire between them.
καὶ ἐσώθη αἶμα ἀναίτιον ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ.
And innocent blood was saved on that day.
§1.62aᵃΔιὰ τοῦτο οἱ νεώτεροι ἀγαπητοὶ Ἰακὼβ ἐν τῇ ἁπλότητι αὐτῶν.
ᵃBecause of this, the younger ones are beloved of Jacob in their simplicity.
§1.62bκαὶ ἡμεῖς φυλασσώμεθα εἰς υἱοὺς δυνατοὺς νεωτέρους· εὐσεβήσουσι γὰρ νεώτεροι, καὶ ἔσται ἐν αὐτοῖς πνεῦμα ἐπιστήμης καὶ συνέσεως εἰς αἰῶνα αἰῶνος.
And let us also watch over powerful younger sons; for the younger will walk in piety, and there will be in them a spirit of knowledge and understanding forever and ever.
