§1.1ΚΑΙ ἦν ἀνὴρ οἰκῶν ἐν Βαβυλῶνι, καὶ ὄνομα αὐτῷ Ἰωακείμ.
And there was a man living in Babylon, and his name was Joakim.
§1.2καὶ ἔλαβε γυναῖκα ᾖ ὄνομα Σουσάννα, θυγάτηρ Χελκίου, καλὴ σφόδρα καὶ φοβουμένη τὸν κύριον·
And he took a wife whose name was Susanna, the daughter of Helkias, exceedingly beautiful and fearing the Lord.
§1.3καὶ οἱ γονεῖς αὐτῆς δίκαιοι, καὶ ἐδίδαξαν τὴν θυγατέρα αὐτῶν κατὰ τὸν νόμον Μωυσῆ.
And her parents were righteous, and they educated their daughter according to the law of Moses.
§1.4καὶ ἦν Ἰωακεὶμ πλούσιος σφόδρα, καὶ ἦν αὐτῷ παράδεισος γειτνιῶν τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ· καὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν προσήγοντο οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι διὰ τὸ εἶναι αὐτὸν ἐνδοξότερον πάντων.
And Joakim was very rich, and he had a garden adjoining his house; and the Jews would gather to him because he was more honorable than all.
§1.5Καὶ ἀπεδείχθησαν δύο πρεσβύτεροι ἐκ τοῦ λαοῦ κριταὶ ἐν τῷ ἐνιαυτῷ ἐκείνῳ, περὶ ὧν ἐλάλησεν ὁ δεσπότης ὅτι ἐξῆλθεν ἀνομία ἐκ Βαβυλῶνος ἐκ πρεσβυτέρων κριτῶν οἱ ἐδόκουν κυβερνῶν τὸν λαόν.
And two elders from the people were appointed judges in that year, of whom the Lord spoke, saying that lawlessness came forth from Babylon from elder judges who seemed to govern the people.
§1.6καὶ ἤρχοντο κρίσεις ἐξ ἄλλων πόλεων πρὸς αὐτοὺς.
And judgements came to them from other cities.
§1.7οὗτοι ἰδόντες γυναῖκα ἀστείαν τῷ εἴδει, γυναῖκα ἀδελφοῦ αὐτῶν ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραήλ, ὄνομα Σουσάνναν, θυγατέρα Χελκίου, γυναῖκα Ἰωακείμ, περιπατοῦσαν ἐν τῷ παραδείσῳ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς αὐτῆς τὸ δειλινὸν §1.8καὶ ἐπιθυμήσαντες αὐτῆς, §1.9διέστρεψαν τὸν νοῦν αὐτῶν καὶ ἐξέκλιναν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτῶν τοῦ μὴ βλέπειν εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν μηδέ μνημονεύειν κριμάτων δικαίων.
These men, seeing a woman beautiful in appearance—a wife of their brother from the sons of Israel, named Susanna, daughter of Helkias, wife of Joakim—walking in her husband's garden in the evening, and desiring her, perverted their minds and turned away their eyes so as not to look toward heaven nor remember righteous judgements.
§1.10καὶ ἀμφότεροι ἦσαν κατανενυγμένοι περὶ αὐτῆς, καὶ ἕτερος τῷ ἑτέρῳ οὐ προσεποιεῖτο τὸ κακὸν τὸ ἔχον αὐτοὺς περὶ αὐτῆς, οὐδέ ἡ γυνὴ ἔγνω τὸ πρᾶγμα τοῦτο.
And both were deeply pained concerning her, yet one did not acknowledge to the other the evil they had concerning her, nor did the woman know of this matter.
§1.12καὶ ὡς ἐγίνετο ὄρθρος, ἐρχόμενοι ἔκλεπτον ἀλλήλους σπεύδοντες, τίς φανήσεται αὐτῇ πρότερος καὶ λαλήσει πρὸς αὐτήν.
And as morning came, they came, stealthily watching each other in haste, to see who would appear to her first and speak to her.
§1.13καὶ ἰδοὺ αὕτη κατὰ τὸ εἰωθὸς περιεπάτει, καὶ ὁ εἶς τῶν πρεσβυτέρων ἐληλύθει, καὶ ἰδοὺ ὁ ἕτερος παρεγένετο, καὶ εἶς τὸν ἕτερον ἀνέκρινε λέγων Τί σὺ οὕτως ὄρθρου ἐξῆλθες οὐ παραλαβὼν με; §1.14καὶ ἐξωμολογήσαντο πρὸς ἀλλήλους ἑκάτερος τὴν ὀδύνην αὐτοῦ.
And behold, she was walking according to her custom, and one of the elders had come, and behold, the other arrived, and one questioned the other, saying, "Why did you go out so early in the morning without taking me along?" And they confessed to each other, each his own pain.
§1.19καὶ εἶπεν εἶς τῷ ἑτέρῳ Πορευθῶμεν πρὸς αὐτὴν· καὶ συνθέμενοι προσήλθοσαν αὐτῇ καὶ ἐξεβιάζοντο αὐτήν.
And one said to the other, "Let us go to her." And having agreed, they approached her and began to force her.
§1.22καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ἡ Ἰουδαία Οἶδα ὅτι ἐὰν πράξω τοῦτο θάνατός μοί ἐστι, καὶ ἐὰν μὴ πράξω οὐκ ἐκφεύξομ τὰς χεῖρας ὑμῶν·
And the Jewish woman said to them, "I know that if I do this, it is death for me; and if I do not do it, I shall not escape your hands.
§1.23κάλλιον δέ με μὴ πράξασαν ἐμπεσεῖν εἰς τὰς χεῖρας ὑμῶν ἤ ἁμαρτεῖν ἐνώπιον Κυρίου. §1.28οἱ δὲ παράνομοι ἄνδρες ἀπέστρεψαν ἀπειλοῦντες ἐν ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐνεδρεύοντες ἵνα θανατώσουσιν αὐτὴν·
But it is better for me to fall into your hands without having done this, than to sin in the sight of the Lord." And the lawless men turned away, threatening in themselves and plotting to put her to death.
καὶ ἐλθόντες ἐπὶ τὴν συναγωγὴν τῆς πόλεως οὖ παρῴκουσαν, καὶ συνήδρευσαν οἱ ὄντες ἐκεῖ πάντες οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραήλ·
And they went to the synagogue of the city where they lived, and all the sons of Israel who were there gathered together.
§1.29καὶ ἀναστάντες οἱ δύο πρεσβύτεροι καὶ κριταὶ εἶπαν Ἀποστείλατε ἐπὶ Σουσάνναν, θυγατέρα Χελκίου, ἥτις ἐστὶ γυνὴ Ἰωακείμ. οἱ δὲ εὐθέως ἐκάλεσαν αὐτήν.
And the two elders and judges stood up and said, "Send for Susanna, the daughter of Helkias, who is the wife of Joakim." And they called her immediately.
§1.30ὡς δὲ παρεγενήθη ἡ γυνὴ σὺν τῷ πατρὶ ἑαυτῆς καὶ τῇ μητρί, καὶ οἱ παῖδες καὶ αἱ παιδίσκαι αὐτῆς ὄντες τὸν ἀριθμὸν πεντακόσιοι παρεγένοντο, καὶ τὰ παιδία Σουσάννας τέσσαρα.
And when the woman arrived with her father and her mother, and her male and female servants, who numbered five hundred, also arrived, along with Susanna's four children.
§1.31ἧν δὲ ἡ γυνὴ τρυφερὰ σφόδρα.
Now the woman was exceedingly delicate.
§1.32καὶ προσέταξαν οἱ παράνομοι ἀποκαλύψαι αὐτήν, ἵνα ἐμπλησθῶσιν κάλλους ἐπιθυμίας αὐτῆς.
And the lawless men commanded her to be uncovered, so that they might be filled with desire for her beauty.
§1.33καὶ ἐκλαίοσαν οἱ παρʼ αὐτῆς πάντες καὶ ὅσοι αὐτὴν ᾔδεισαν πάντες.
And all her people wept, and all who knew her wept.
§1.34ἀναστάντες δὲ οἱ πρεσβύτεροι καὶ κριταὶ ἐπέθηκαν τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῶν ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς αὐτῆς·
And the elders and judges stood up and laid their hands upon her head.
§1.35ἡ δὲ καρδία αὐτῆς ἐπεποίθει ἐπὶ Κυρίῳ τῷ θεῷ αὐτῆς, καὶ ἀνακύψασα ἔκλαυσεν ἐν αὐτῇ λέγουσα §1.35aa Κύριε ὁ θεὸς ὁ αἰώνιος, ὁ εἰδὼς τὰ πάντα πρὶν γενέσεως αὐτῶν, σὺ οἶδας ὅτι οὐκ ἐποίησα ἃ πονηρεύονται οἱ ἄνομοι οὗτοι ἐπʼ ἐμοί. καὶ εἰσήκουσε Κύριος τῆς δεήσεως αὐτῆς.
But her heart trusted in the Lord her God, and looking up, she wept within herself, saying, "O Lord, the eternal God, who knows all things before their birth, you know that I did not do what these lawless men maliciously plot against me." And the Lord heard her prayer.
