Warning to Priests and Betrayal of the Covenant of Levi

Passage 2 of 4 · Greek

Summary

The Lord warns the priests who despise Him, contrasting their unfaithfulness with the covenant of Levi. He also strongly condemns their betrayal of their brothers and the wives of their youth, their intermarriage with foreign gods, and their skepticism toward God's justice.

And now, this commandment is for you, O priests.
If you do not listen, and if you do not lay it to heart to give glory to my name, says the Lord Almighty, I will send the curse upon you, and I will curse your blessing, and I will curse it; and I will scatter your blessing, and it shall not be among you, because you do not lay it to heart.
Behold, I will reject for you the shoulder, and I will scatter offal upon your faces, the offal of your feasts, and I will take you away to the same.
And you shall know that I have sent this commandment to you, so that my covenant might be with the Levites, says the Lord Almighty.
My covenant was with him of life and peace; and I gave them to him that he might fear me with fear, and that he might stand in awe of my name.
The law of truth was in his mouth, and unrighteousness was not found on his lips; in peace, walking uprightly, he went with me, and turned many back from unrighteousness.
For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and they should seek the law from his mouth; for he is the messenger of the Lord Almighty.
But you have turned aside from the way and have caused many to stumble in the law; you have corrupted the covenant of Levi, says the Lord Almighty.
And so I have made you despised and rejected among all the nations, because you have not kept my ways but have shown partiality in the law.
§2.10Οὐχὶ θεὸς εἰς ἔκτισεν ὑμᾶς;
Did not one God create you?
οὐχὶ πατὴρ εἰς πάντων ὑμῶν;
Is there not one father of you all?
τί ὅτι ἐνκατελίπετε ἕκαστος τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ, τοῦ βεβηλῶσαι τὴν διαθήκην τῶν πατέρων ὑμῶν;
Why then does each of you abandon his brother, to profane the covenant of your fathers?
Judah has been abandoned, and an abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah has profaned the holy things of the Lord, which he loved, and has gone after foreign gods.
May the Lord destroy the man who does these things, until he is brought low from the tents of Jacob and from those who offer sacrifice to the Lord Almighty.
And these things which I hated, you did; you covered the altar of the Lord with tears, and with weeping and groaning from troubles.
ἔτι ἄξιον ἐπιβλέψαι εἰς θυσίαν ἡ λαβεῖν δεκτὸν ἐκ τῶν χειροῖν ὑμῶν;
Is it still worthwhile to look upon a sacrifice or to receive it favorably from your hands?
Yet you say, 'For what reason?' Because the Lord has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, whom you have abandoned; yet she is your companion and your wife of covenant.
§2.15καὶ οὐ καλὸν ἐποίησεν καὶ ὑὑπόλιμμα πνεύματος αὐτοῦ;
And did he not make her well, and there was a remnant of his spirit?
And you say, 'What else does God seek but a seed?' Therefore, guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not abandon the wife of your youth.
'But if you hate and send her away,' says the Lord God of Israel, 'then ungodliness will cover your thoughts,' says the Lord Almighty.
'Therefore guard yourselves in your spirit, and do not abandon her.' You who provoke God with your words.
καὶ είπατε Ἐν τίνι παρωξύναμεν αὐτόν; ἐν τῷ λέγειν ὑμᾶς Πᾶς ποιῶν πονηρόν, καλὸν ἐνώπιον Κυρίου, καὶ ἐν αὐτοῖς αὐτὸς εὐδόκησεν· καί Ποῦ ἐστιν ὁ θεὸς τῆς δικαιοσύνης;
Yet you say, 'In what way have we provoked him?' In that you say, 'Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the Lord, and he takes pleasure in them,' and, 'Where is the God of justice?'

Notes

  1. §2.2καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ — The coordinating conjunction καί functions as the "apodotic καί" (reflecting Semitic influence corresponding to the Hebrew wāw-apodosis), introducing the main clause after the conditional clause (ἐὰν...). It emphasizes the consequence that will follow if the condition is met.
  2. §2.3ἀφορίζω ὑμῖν, τὸν ὥμον — A translational feature where the Greek translator rendered the Hebrew zĕrôaʿ ('arm' or 'seed') as ὥμος ('shoulder', the priest's portion). This denotes God's rejection of the priests' privileges and their allotted portions.
  3. §2.4τοῦ εἰναι — A genitive articular infinitive expressing purpose, meaning 'in order for my covenant with the Levites to continue (to be)'.
  4. §2.15καὶ οὐ καλὸν ἐποίησεν — Reflecting a difficult Hebrew text, this Greek syntax is highly complex. It is interpreted affirmatively here as 'did He not make it well?', which, along with the 'remnant of spirit' (ὑπόλιμμα πνεύματος), contrastively points to the perfection of God's original creation.
