Septuagint · Micah §1.1-1.16

Judgment on Samaria and Jerusalem and the Coming Mourning

Passage 1 of 7 · Greek

Summary

The word of the Lord comes to Micah, declaring God's fierce judgment and destruction upon Samaria and Jerusalem due to their transgressions, and describing the mourning of the surrounding cities.

The word of the Lord which came to Micah the Morasthite in the days of Joatham, Achaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.
Hear, ye peoples, all of you; let the earth give ear, and all that are in it: and let the Lord God be among you for a witness, the Lord from his holy temple.
For behold, the Lord is coming forth out of his place, and will come down, and tread upon the high places of the earth.
And the mountains shall be shaken under him, and the valleys shall melt as wax before the fire, and as water poured down a steep place.
All this is for the transgression of Jacob, and for the sin of the house of Israel.
τίς ἡ ἀσέβεια τοῦ Ἰακώβ, οὐ Σαμάρεια καὶ τίς ἡ ἁμαρτία οἵκου Ἰούδα, οὐχὶ Ἰερουσαλήμ;
What is the transgression of Jacob? Is it not Samaria? And what is the sin of the house of Judah? Is it not Jerusalem?
Therefore I will make Samaria as a lodge of the field, and as a planting of a vineyard: and I will drag down her stones into the gulf, and I will discover her foundations.
And they shall cut in pieces all her graven images, and all her hires they shall burn with fire, and all her idols I will lay desolate: for she gathered them of the hires of fornication, and of the hires of fornication she has amassed them.
For this reason she shall lament and wail, she shall go unshod and naked, she shall make a wailing like that of dragons, and a mourning as of the daughters of sirens.
For her plague has prevailed; for it has come even to Judah, and has reached to the gate of my people, even to Jerusalem.
Ye that are in Geth, exalt not yourselves, and ye in Achim, build not again from the house of laughter; sprinkle dust upon your laughter.
She that dwells well in her cities came not forth, she that dwells in Senjaar, to lament for the house next to her: she shall receive of you a stroke of pain.
§1.12τίς ἡρξατο εἰς ἀγαθὰ κατοικούσῃ ὀδύνας;
Who has begun to bring pain to her that dwells in peace?
For evil has come down from the Lord upon the gates of Jerusalem, even a noise of chariots and horsemen: she that dwells in Lachis, she is the leader of sin to the daughter of Sion, for in thee were found the transgressions of Israel.
Therefore shall she give messengers as far as the inheritance of Geth, even vain houses; they became a frustration to the kings of Israel, until they bring the heirs, O inhabitant of Lachis: the inheritance shall come as far as Odollam, even the glory of the daughter of Israel.
Shave thine hair, and shear it for thy delicate children; enlarge thy baldness as an eagle; for they are gone into captivity from thee.

Notes

  1. 1.1ὑπὲρ ὧν — The relative pronoun ὧν is neuter plural, referring to the 'visions or events' that Micah saw. The preposition ὑπέρ is used here in the sense of 'concerning' (synonymous with περί).
  2. 1.10ἐξ οἴκου καταγέλωτα — This expression represents the Greek translator's (LXX) rendering or wordplay on the Hebrew place-name 'Beth-le-aphrah' (house of dust), interpreting it as 'house of mockery' (καταγέλωτα).
  3. 1.11κατοικοῦσα — A feminine singular participle, functioning vocatively, referring to the personified city or its female inhabitants.
  4. 1.15τοῖς κληρονόμους — A syntactical anomaly in the manuscripts where the dative article τοῖς is combined with the accusative noun κληρονόμους. It is likely a scribal error for the accusative object τοὺς κληρονόμους of the verb ἀγάγωσιν.
