The Royal Decree Saving the Jews and Mordecai's Honor

Passage 12 of 14 · Greek

Summary

King Artaxerxes issues a new decree exposing Haman's plot and defending the Jews, granting them the right to self-defense and vengeance. Consequently, Mordecai is highly honored, and joy and light spread among the Jews.

And to give attention to future times, so that we may render the kingdom undisturbed with peace to all men, making use of changes, and always judging the things that come under our eyes with a gentler approach.
For Haman, son of Hammedatha, a Macedonian, in truth an alien to the blood of the Persians and far removed from our kindness, having been received by us as a guest, obtained the benevolence which we have toward every nation to such an extent that he was proclaimed our father, and continued to be bowed down to by all as the second person of the royal throne.
But not bearing his pride, he endeavored to deprive us of our rule and our life, asking for the destruction of our savior and constant benefactor Mordecai, and Esther, the blameless partner of our kingdom, along with their entire nation, through the intricate deceits of methods; for by these means he thought, having taken us friendless, to transfer the dominion of the Persians to the Macedonians.
But we find that the Jews, who were delivered to destruction by this thrice-cursed man, are not evildoers, but govern themselves by the most righteous laws, and are children of the Most High, Greatest, Living God, who directs the kingdom for us and our ancestors in the fairest order.
Therefore you will do well not to make use of the letters sent by Haman, son of Hammedatha, because he himself who worked these things has been crucified at the gates of Susa with all his household, since the all-ruling God swiftly rendered to him the fitting judgment.
But having published the copy of this letter in every place with boldness, permit the Jews to use their own customs, and to help them in order that they may defend themselves against those who attack them in the time of affliction, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, Adar, on that very day.
For the all-ruling God made this day a day of joy for them instead of destruction of the chosen race.
Therefore you also, among your named feasts, observe a notable day with all rejoicing, so that both now and hereafter there may be salvation for us and for the loyal Persians, but for those who plot against us a memorial of destruction.
But every city or land whatsoever that does not act according to these things shall be utterly consumed with spear and fire in anger; it shall be made not only impassable for men, but also most hostile to beasts and birds for all time.
And let the copies be posted visibly in the whole kingdom, and let all the Jews be ready for this day to fight against their adversaries.
So the horsemen went out, hastening to perform the words spoken by the king; and the decree was posted also in Susa.
And Mordecai went out clothed in a royal robe, having a golden crown and a diadem of fine linen and purple; and those in Susa, seeing him, rejoiced.
And to the Jews there came light and gladness in every city and province, wherever the decree was posted, wherever the proclamation was posted: joy and gladness for the Jews, feasting and gladness; and many of the nations circumcised themselves and became Jews because of the fear of the Jews.

Notes

  1. 8.8aπροσέχειν — Interpreted as an infinitive with an imperative force (infinitivus pro imperio), continuing the general decree or acting independently.
  2. 8.11aἧς ἔχομεν πρὸς πᾶν ἔθνος φιλανθρωπίας — An attraction of the relative pronoun, where the relative pronoun (originally accusative ἥν as the object of ἔχομεν) is assimilated to the genitive case of its antecedent φιλανθρωπίας.
  3. 8.13aαἰτησάμενος — A participle agreeing with the subject (Haman), taking the accusative objects (Μαρδοχαῖον... καὶ... Ἐσθὴρ σὺν παντὶ τῷ τούτων ἔθνει), meaning 'by requesting' or 'having requested'.
  4. 8.14aλαβὼν ἡμᾶς ἐρήμους — The adjective ἐρήμους acts predicatively with the pronoun ἡμᾶς, meaning 'having caught us in a destitute/friendless state'.
  5. 8.19aἐᾷν — Like συνεπισχύειν in §8.20a, this infinitive is used with an imperative force typical of official decrees.
