Mount Kronion and the Sanctuaries of Sosipolis and Hippodameia

Passage 248 of 465 · Greek

Summary

Pausanias describes Mount Kronion and its sacrifices, the origin myth of the sanctuary of Eileithyia and the savior-god Sosipolis who appeared as a dragon to defeat the Arcadians, and the sacred enclosure of Hippodameia.

§6.20.1τὸ δὲ ὄρος τὸ Κρόνιον κατὰ τὰ ἤδη λελεγμένα μοι παρὰ τὴν κρηπῖδα καὶ τοὺς ἐπʼ αὐτῇ παρήκει θησαυρούς.
The mountain Kronion, according to what has already been said by me, extends along the terrace and the treasuries upon it.
ἐπὶ δὲ τοῦ ὄρους τῇ κορυφῇ θύουσιν οἱ Βασίλαι καλούμενοι τῷ Κρόνῳ κατὰ ἰσημερίαν τὴν ἐν τῷ ἦρι, Ἐλαφίῳ μηνὶ παρὰ Ἠλείοις.
On the summit of the mountain, those called the Basilai sacrifice to Kronos at the equinox in the spring, in the month of Elaphios among the Eleans.
§6.20.2ἐν δὲ τοῖς πέρασι τοῦ Κρονίου κατὰ τὸ πρὸς τὴν ἄρκτον ἔστιν ἐν μέσῳ τῶν θησαυρῶν καὶ τοῦ ὄρους ἱερὸν Εἰλειθυίας, ἐν δὲ αὐτῷ Σωσίπολις Ἠλείοις ἐπιχώριος δαίμων ἔχει τιμάς.
At the limits of Kronion, on the side towards the north, between the treasuries and the mountain, there is a sanctuary of Eileithyia, and in it Sosipolis, a local divinity of the Eleans, receives honors.
They call Eileithyia indeed 'Olympia', and choose a woman to be priestess for the goddess every year; and the old woman who tends Sosipolis, according to the law of the Eleans, performs sacred rites, and herself brings water for bathing to the god, and sets down for him barley-cakes kneaded with honey.
In the front part of the temple—for indeed it is built double—there is both an altar of Eileithyia and an entrance into it for people; but in the inner part Sosipolis has honors, and there is no entrance into it except for the woman who tends the god, who has drawn a white veil over her head and face; and maidens and women waiting in the sanctuary of Eileithyia sing a hymn, and while they purify with all kinds of incense, they are not accustomed to pour wine as a libation to him.
καὶ ὅρκος παρὰ τῷ Σωσιπόλιδι ἐπὶ μεγίστοις καθέστηκεν.
And an oath taken in the presence of Sosipolis is established for the greatest matters.
It is said also that when the Arcadians had invaded Elis with an army and the Eleans were arrayed against them, a woman came to the generals of the Eleans, holding a babe at her breast, saying that she herself had given birth to the child, but was giving him, in consequence of dreams, to fight as an ally for the Eleans.
οἱ δὲ ἐν ταῖς ἀρχαῖς—πιστὰ γὰρ τὴν ἄνθρωπον ἡγοῦντο εἰρηκέναι—τιθέασι τὸ παιδίον πρὸ τοῦ στρατεύματος γυμνόν.
And those in authority—for they believed the woman had spoken the truth—placed the child naked in front of the army.
The Arcadians advanced, and the child there was already a dragon; and upon the Arcadians, who were thrown into confusion at the sight and gave way to flight, the Eleans pressed, and won a most glorious victory, and they gave the god the name Sosipolis.
ἔνθα δέ σφισιν ὁ δράκων ἔδοξεν ἐσδῦναι μετὰ τὴν μάχην, τὸ ἱερὸν ἐποίησαν ἐνταῦθα· σὺν δὲ αὐτῷ σέβεσθαι καὶ τὴν Εἰλείθυιαν ἐνόμισαν, ὅτι τὸν παῖδά σφισιν ἡ θεὸς αὕτη προήγαγεν ἐς ἀνθρώπους.
And where the dragon seemed to them to slip into the earth after the battle, they built the sanctuary there; and they resolved to worship Eileithyia also along with him, because this goddess had brought forth the child into the world for them.
§6.20.6τοῖς δὲ τῶν Ἀρκάδων ἀποθανοῦσιν ἐν τῇ μάχῃ ἐστὶ τὸ μνῆμα ἐπὶ τοῦ λόφου διαβάντων τὸν Κλάδεον ὡς ἐπὶ ἡλίου δυσμάς.
For those of the Arcadians who died in the battle, their tomb is on the hill, after crossing the Cladeus, towards the setting of the sun.
πλησίον δὲ τῆς Εἰλειθυίας ἐρείπια Ἀφροδίτης Οὐρανίας ἱεροῦ λείπεται, θύουσι δὲ καὶ αὐτόθι ἐπὶ τῶν βωμῶν.
And near Eileithyia, ruins of a sanctuary of Aphrodite Urania remain, and they sacrifice there too upon the altars.
And there is within the Altis, near the processional entrance, the so-called Hippodameium, a space of about a plethron enclosed by a wall; into this once each year there is an entrance for the women, who sacrifice to Hippodameia and perform other things to her honor.
They say that Hippodameia retired to Midea in Argolis, inasmuch as Pelops had anger against her especially on account of the death of Chrysippus; but they themselves say that later, in consequence of an oracle, they brought the bones of Hippodameia to Olympia.

Notes

  1. 6.20.1παρὰ Ἠλείοις — The preposition `παρά` with the dative here means 'among' or 'in the custom of the Eleans', specifying that the preceding `Ἐλαφίῳ μηνὶ` (in the month of Elaphios) is a month-name belonging to the local Elean calendar.
  2. 6.20.2ἱερασομένην — The future participle `ἱερασομένην` (feminine accusative singular) functions substantively as the direct object of the verb `αἱροῦνται` (they choose), conveying a sense of purpose ('one who is to serve as priestess').
  3. 6.20.3ἐφειλκυσμένῃ ὕφος λευκόν — The perfect middle/passive participle `ἐφειλκυσμένῃ` (having drawn over oneself) governs the direct object in the accusative, `ὕφος λευκόν` (a white veil). This is a characteristic middle-voice construction expressing an action done to or for oneself (drawing the veil over her own head and face).
  4. 6.20.4λέγεται δὲ καὶ Ἀρκάδων ἐς τὴν Ἠλείαν ἐσβεβληκότων ... γυναῖκα ... λέγειν — The main clause is structured around the impersonal verb `λέγεται` (it is said), which governs an accusative and infinitive (A.c.I.) construction containing the subject accusative `γυναῖκα` and the infinitive `λέγειν`. Two temporal genitive absolute clauses (`Ἀρκάδων ... ἐσβεβληκότων` and `τῶν Ἠλείων ... ἀντικαθημένων`) are nested beforehand to establish the background.
  5. 6.20.5ἔνθα δέ σφισιν ὁ δράκων ἔδοξεν ἐσδῦναι ... τὸ ἱερὸν ἐποίησαν ἐνταῦθα — The relative adverb `ἔνθα` (where) and the demonstrative adverb `ἐνταῦθα` (there) form a correlative structure. The dative pronoun `σφισιν` (to them) represents the subject of judgment (dative of agent/interest) with the verb `ἔδοξεν` (seemed).
  6. 6.20.7κομίσαι ... ἐν Ὀλυμπίᾳ — The verb of motion `κομίσαι` (to bring) is construed with the prepositional phrase of rest `ἐν Ὀλυμπίᾳ` (in Olympia). This is a constructio praegnans (pregnant construction) where the motion of bringing and the subsequent status of the bones resting in Olympia are packed into a single phrase.
