But when Aristomenes declined the leadership of those who were setting out for the colony, he married off his sister Hagnagora and his daughters—the eldest and the one after her: the sister to Tharyx in Phigalia, and the daughters to Damothoidas of Lepreum and to Theopompos of Heraea.
And he himself, having arrived in Delphi, consulted the god.
And the oracle given to Aristomenes is not recorded.
But to Damagetos the Rhodian, who was king in Ialysos, and who at that time had come to Apollo and asked from where he ought to take a wife, the Pythia declared that he should marry the daughter of the best of the Greeks.
And he—for Aristomenes had also a third daughter—married her, considering that man to be by far the best of the Greeks of that time.
And Aristomenes arrived in Rhodes with his daughter, and from there he intended to go up to Sardis to Ardys the son of Gyges, and to Median Ecbatana to King Phraortes.
But indeed, before these things, it happened that he fell ill and died; for it was not destined that any further calamity should come to the Lacedaemonians from Aristomenes.
And when he died, Damagetos and the Rhodians made a prominent monument for him and rendered him honors starting from him.
Now, the stories told about those called the Diagoridai in Rhodes, who were descended from Diagoras, the son of Damagetos, the son of Dorieus, the son of Damagetos and the daughter of Aristomenes, I have passed over, lest I should seem to write inappropriately.
And the Lacedaemonians at that time, when they had conquered Messenia, divided the rest of it by lot among themselves, except for the territory of the Asinaeans, and they gave Mothone to the Nauplians, who had recently been expelled from Nauplia by the Argives.
And as for those of the Messenians who were left behind in the land, who were by necessity reckoned among the Helots, it befell them afterwards to revolt from the Lacedaemonians during the seventy-ninth Olympiad, which Xenophon the Corinthian won, when Archimedes was archon in Athens; and they revolted having found the following opportunity.
Men of the Lacedaemonians, having been condemned to death on some charge or other, fled as suppliants to Taenarum; from there, the board of the ephors, having dragged them away from the altar, put them to death.
And to the Spartans, who had held the suppliants in no account, there came wrath from Poseidon, and the god threw their entire city down to the ground.
And upon this calamity, those of the Helots who were of old Messenians revolted to Mount Ithome.
And the Lacedaemonians sent for other allied forces against them, and also Cimon the son of Miltiades, who was their proxenos, and a force of the Athenians; but when the Athenians arrived, they seem to have suspected them of being likely to make a revolution, and because of this suspicion, they sent them away not long after from Ithome.
And the Athenians, having perceived the suspicion of the Lacedaemonians against them, became friends with the Argives because of this, and to those of the Messenians who were besieged in Ithome and departed under truce, they gave Naupactus, having taken it from the Locrians who are called Ozolian near Aetolia.
And what allowed the Messenians to depart from Ithome was both the strength of the place, and at the same time the Pythia had foretold to the Lacedaemonians that indeed there would be punishment for them if they sinned against the suppliant of Zeus of Ithome.
On account of these things, they were let go from the Peloponnese under truce.
