Messenian Migration to Sicily and the Renaming of Zancle

Passage 166 of 465 · Greek

Summary

The Second Messenian War ends with the fall of Eira, and the exiled Messenians migrate to Sicily at the invitation of Anaxilas, tyrant of Rhegion, where they jointly settle in Zancle and rename it Messene.

Of the Messenians, as many as were captured around Eira or elsewhere in Messenia, these the Lacedaemonians assigned to the Helot class; but the Pylians, the Mothonaeans, and those who inhabited the coastal regions set sail in ships for Kyllene, the port of the Eleans, just about the time of the capture of Eira.
From there they sent messengers to the Messenians in Arcadia, wishing to seek in a common fleet a land where they might dwell, and they urged Aristomenes to lead them to a colony.
But he indeed said that as long as he lived he would make war on the Lacedaemonians, and that he knew for certain that some evil would always arise to Sparta through him; but to them he gave Gorgos and Mantiklos as leaders.
And Euergetidas also retreated with the other Messenians to Lykaion; but from there, when he saw that the plan of Aristomenes for the capture of Sparta had failed, having persuaded about fifty of the Messenians, he went back against the Lacedaemonians at Eira, and fell upon them while they were still plundering for their victory celebration, and brought grief upon them.
And there fate overtook him, but Aristomenes, when he had appointed the leaders for the Messenians, ordered whoever wished to take part in the colony to go to Kyllene.
And all took part, except if old age prevented anyone, or if anyone happened not to be well-provided for the journey; and these remained there with the Arcadians.
And Eira was captured and the second war between the Lacedaemonians and the Messenians came to an end when Autosthenes was archon at Athens, in the first year of the twenty-eighth Olympiad, which Chionis the Laconian won.
And when the Messenians were assembled in Kyllene, they decided to winter there for the coming winter, and the Eleans provided them with a market and money; and at the same time with the spring they deliberated where they ought to be sent.
And the opinions were, on the part of Gorgos, that they should seize Zakynthos, which lies beyond Kephallenia, and, becoming islanders instead of mainlanders, sail against the coastal areas of Laconia with ships and ravage the land; but Mantiklos urged them to forget Messene and their hatred of the Lacedaemonians, and, sailing to Sardo, acquire the greatest island and the first in prosperity.
Meanwhile Anaxilas sent messengers to the Messenians, calling them to Italy.
And Anaxilas was tyrant of Rhegion, and he was the fourth descendant of Alkidamidas; and Alkidamidas had migrated from Messene to Rhegion after the death of King Aristodemos and the capture of Ithome.
This Anaxilas, then, sent for the Messenians; and when they arrived, he told them that the Zancleans were at variance with him, and had a fertile territory and a city in a beautiful part of Sicily, which indeed he said he wished to give them after conquering it together with them.
And when they accepted his proposal, Anaxilas thus transported them to Sicily.
And Zancle was from the beginning occupied by pirates, who, having built a fort in the deserted land only around the harbor, used it as a base for raids and naval excursions; and their leaders were Krataimenes the Samian and Perieres from Chalcis.
But later Perieres and Krataimenes decided to bring in other Greeks as inhabitants.
And at that time Anaxilas defeated the Zancleans as they put to sea to oppose him with ships, and the Messenians defeated them in a land battle; and the Zancleans, besieged on land by the Messenians and at the same time from the sea by the Rhegines with ships, and when their wall was already being captured, fled to the altars of the gods and to the temples.
Anaxilas indeed urged the Messenians to kill those of the Zancleans who were supplicating and to enslave the rest, together with their women and children; but Gorgos and Mantiklos begged Anaxilas not to force them, who had suffered unholy things from related men, to do similar things to Greek men.
And after this they raised the Zancleans from the altars, and having given oaths and received them from them, they both dwelt in common; and they changed the name of the city to be called Messene instead of Zancle.
And these things were done during the twenty-ninth Olympiad, which Chionis the Laconian won for the second time, when Miltiades was archon at Athens.
And Mantiklos also made the sanctuary of Heracles for the Messenians, and the god is established outside the wall, being called Heracles Mantiklos, just as Ammon in Libya and Belos in Babylon, the latter having his name from an Egyptian man, Belos the son of Libya, and Ammon from the shepherd who established it.
For the exiled Messenians, then, there was an end to their wandering;

Notes

  1. §4.23.1ὑπὸ τὴν ἅλωσιν — The preposition `ὑπό` with the accusative when expressing time can mean either 'just before' or 'just after'. Here it indicates that they set sail around the very time when the capture (`ἅλωσις`) of Eira took place or became imminent.
  2. §4.23.2διαπεπτωκὸς — A perfect participle of the verb `διαπίπτω` (to fail, fall through) acting as a predicative participle of indirect discourse with the verb of perception `ἑώρα` (imperfect of `ὁράω`). It expresses that he saw the plan in a state of having failed.
  3. §4.23.3τὸ χρεών — A neuter noun (originally a neuter participle) derived from the impersonal verb `χρή` (it is necessary), meaning 'fate' or 'death'. Here it functions as the subject, taking the accusative `τὸν μὲν` (Euergetidas) as its object, meaning 'fate overtook him' (i.e., he died in battle).
  4. §4.23.6ἃ δὴ σφίσιν ἐθέλειν ἔφη συγκατεργασάμενος δοῦναι — The relative pronoun `ἃ` (neuter plural, referring back to `χώραν ... καὶ πόλιν`) is the direct object of the infinitive `δοῦναι`. The subject of `ἐθέλειν` is omitted because it is identical to the subject of `ἔφη` (Anaxilas), hence the agreeing participle `συγκατεργασάμενος` is in the nominative. `σφίσιν` (indirect object) refers to the Messenians.
ἀναγκάσαι — An infinitive clause dependent on the verb of entreating `παραιτέομαι` (`παρῃτοῦντο`). The negative particle `μή` is used to express a request to prevent or avoid an action ('entreated him not to force them'). `σφᾶς` (accusative plural of the indirect reflexive pronoun, referring to the Messenians) is the subject accusative of the infinitive `ἀναγκάσαι`.
