Those of the Messenians who happened to have guest-friendships in Sicyon and Argos, and with some of the Arcadians, departed to these cities, while those of the priestly family and those who performed the mysteries of the Great Goddesses went to Eleusis; but the great mass of the people dispersed, each to their ancient homelands.
The Lacedaemonians first razed Ithome to the ground, and then, marching against the remaining cities, captured them.
They also dedicated bronze tripods from the spoils to the Amyclaean god; a statue of Aphrodite stands under the first tripod, of Artemis under the second, and of Kore or Demeter under the third.
These things indeed they dedicated there, but of the Messenian land, they gave to the Asinaeans, who had been expelled by the Argives, that portion by the sea which the Asinaeans still inhabit even now; and to the descendants of Androcles—for Androcles had a daughter, and there were children of this daughter, who had fled to Sparta at the death of Androcles— to these they assigned the land called Hyameia.
The treatment of the Messenians themselves by the Lacedaemonians was as follows.
First they imposed an oath upon them never to revolt from them nor to attempt any other revolution; secondly, they ordered no fixed tribute, but they carried to Sparta half of all the crops grown on their land for them.
It had also been commanded that, for the funerals of the kings and others in authority, both men and women from Messenia should come in black garments; and a penalty was laid upon those who transgressed.
In regard to the punishments with which they insulted the Messenians, Tyrtaeus has written in his poems: "Like asses worn down by heavy burdens, carrying to their masters under grievous necessity half of all the fruit that the ploughed land bears." And that they were also forced to join in mourning, he has shown in these lines: "Lamenting their masters, both the wives and themselves alike, whenever the destructive fate of death should overtake anyone." The Messenians, therefore, since such disasters had overtaken them, and at the same time seeing no hope of clemency from the Lacedaemonians for the future, and thinking it preferable to die fighting or to flee from the Peloponnese altogether rather than endure their present state, resolved by all means to revolt.
To this indeed they were urged not least by the younger men, who were still inexperienced in war, but were high in spirit and preferred to die in a free country, even if it were possible to be slaves in wealth in other respects.
The youth grew up also in other parts of Messenia, but the best and greatest in number were around Andania, and among them was Aristomenes, who even now still receives honors as a hero among the Messenians.
They also believe that the circumstances of his birth were of a more illustrious nature; for they say that a daemon or a god in the likeness of a serpent had intercourse with his mother Nicoteleia.
I know that the Macedonians said similar things of Olympias and the Sicyonians of Aristodama, but there was this difference: For the Messenians do not claim Aristomenes as a son of Heracles or of Zeus, as the Macedonians do Alexander to Ammon and the Sicyonians Aratus to Asclepius; but while most of the Greeks say that Pyrrhus was the father of Aristomenes, I myself know that the Messenians in their libations call Aristomenes the son of Nicomedes.
He then, being in the flower of his age and courage, along with others in authority, incited them to the revolt; but these things were not done openly at once, but they sent secretly to Argos and to the Arcadians to see if they would be willing to aid them without hesitation and no less than in the former war.
