§3.26.1ἐς Θαλάμας δὲ ἐξ Οἰτύλου μῆκος τῆς ὁδοῦ στάδιοι περὶ τοὺς ὀγδοήκοντά εἰσι, κατὰ δὲ τὴν ὁδὸν ἱερόν ἐστιν Ἰνοῦς καὶ μαντεῖον.
From Oitylos to Thalamai the length of the road is about eighty stades, and along the road is a sanctuary and oracle of Ino.
μαντεύονται μὲν οὖν καθεύδοντες, ὁπόσα δʼ ἂν πυθέσθαι δεηθῶσιν, ὀνείρατα δείκνυσί σφισιν ἡ θεός.
They consult the oracle by sleeping, and whatever they need to learn, the goddess shows to them in dreams.
χαλκᾶ δὲ ἕστηκεν ἀγάλματα ἐν ὑπαίθρῳ τοῦ ἱεροῦ, τῆς τε Πασιφάης καὶ Ἡλίου τὸ ἕτερον· αὐτὸ δὲ τὸ ἐν τῷ ναῷ σαφῶς μὲν οὐκ ἦν ἰδεῖν ὑπὸ στεφανωμάτων, χαλκοῦν δὲ καὶ τοῦτο εἶναι λέγουσι.
Bronze images stand in the open air of the sanctuary, one of Pasiphae, and the other of Helios; the image itself in the temple could not be seen clearly because of garlands, but they say that this also is of bronze.
ῥεῖ δὲ καὶ ὕδωρ ἐκ πηγῆς ἱερᾶς πιεῖν ἡδύ· Σελήνης δὲ ἐπίκλησις καὶ οὐ Θαλαμάταις ἐπιχώριος δαίμων ἐστὶν ἡ Πασιφάη.
Water also flows from a sacred spring, sweet to drink; and Pasiphae is a surname of Selene, and not a local deity of the people of Thalamai.
§3.26.2Θαλαμῶν δὲ ἀπέχει σταδίους εἴκοσιν ὀνομαζομένη Πέφνος ἐπὶ θαλάσσῃ.
Twenty stades from Thalamai is a place on the sea called Pephnos.
πρόκειται δὲ νησὶς πέτρας τῶν μεγάλων οὐ μείζων, Πέφνος καὶ ταύτῃ τὸ ὄνομα· τεχθῆναι δὲ ἐνταῦθα τοὺς Διοσκούρους φασὶν οἱ Θαλαμᾶται.
In front of it lies a small island, no larger than a great rock, and its name is also Pephnos; the people of Thalamai say that the Dioscuri were born here.
τοῦτο μὲν δὴ καὶ Ἀλκμᾶνα ἐν ᾄσματι οἶδα εἰπόντα· τραφῆναι δὲ οὐκέτι ἐν τῇ Πέφνῳ φασὶν αὐτούς, ἀλλὰ Ἑρμῆν τὸν ἐς Πελλάναν κομίσαντα εἶναι.
Indeed, I know that Alcman also said this in a song; but they say that they were no longer reared in Pephnos, but that it was Hermes who carried them to Pellana.
§3.26.3ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ νησῖδι ἀγάλματα Διοσκούρων χαλκᾶ μέγεθος ποδιαῖα ἐν ὑπαίθρῳ τῆς νησῖδός ἐστιν· ταῦτα ἡ θάλασσα ἀποκινεῖν οὐκ ἐθέλει κατακλύζουσα ὥρᾳ χειμῶνος τὴν πέτραν.
On this islet there are bronze images of the Dioscuri, a foot in height, in the open air of the islet; the sea, though it floods the rock in the winter season, does not move them.
τοῦτό τε δὴ θαῦμά ἐστι καὶ οἱ μύρμηκες αὐτόθι λευκότερον ἢ ὡς μυρμήκων τὸ χρῶμα φαίνουσι.
This is indeed a wonder, and the ants there appear whiter than is the usual color of ants.
τὴν δὲ χώραν οἱ Μεσσήνιοι ταύτην αὑτῶν φασιν εἶναι τὸ ἀρχαῖον, ὥστε καὶ τοὺς Διοσκούρους μᾶλλόν τι αὑτοῖς καὶ οὐ Λακεδαιμονίοις προσήκειν νομίζουσιν.
The Messenians say that this territory was anciently theirs, so that they believe the Dioscuri belong more to themselves than to the Lacedaemonians.
§3.26.4Πέφνου δὲ στάδια εἴκοσιν ἀπέχει Λεῦκτρα.
Twenty stades from Pephnos is Leuctra.
ἐφʼ ὅτῳ μὲν δή ἐστιν ὄνομα τῇ πόλει Λεῦκτρα, οὐκ οἶδα· εἰ δʼ ἄρα ἀπὸ Λευκίππου τοῦ Περιήρους, ὡς οἱ Μεσσήνιοί φασι, τούτου μοι δοκοῦσιν ἕνεκα οἱ ταύτῃ θεῶν μάλιστα Ἀσκληπιὸν τιμᾶν, ἅτε Ἀρσινόης παῖδα εἶναι τῆς Λευκίππου νομίζοντες.
For what reason the city has the name Leuctra I do not know; but if indeed, as the Messenians say, it is from Leucippus the son of Perieres, it is for this reason, it seems to me, that the people here worship Asclepius most of the gods, believing him to be the son of Arsinoe, the daughter of Leucippus.
λίθου δέ ἐστιν Ἀσκληπιοῦ τε ἄγαλμα καὶ Ἰνοῦς ἑτέρωθι.
There is an image of Asclepius of stone, and of Ino in another place.
§3.26.5πεποίηται δὲ καὶ Κασσάνδρας τῆς Πριάμου ναὸς καὶ ἄγαλμα, Ἀλεξάνδρας ὑπὸ τῶν ἐγχωρίων καλουμένης· καὶ Ἀπόλλωνος Καρνείου ξόανά ἐστι κατὰ ταὐτὰ καθὰ δὴ καὶ Λακεδαιμονίων νομίζουσιν οἱ Σπάρτην ἔχοντες.
There is also a temple and image of Cassandra the daughter of Priam, who is called Alexandra by the inhabitants; and there are wooden images of Apollo Carneus according to the very same customs as the Lacedaemonians who hold Sparta observe.
ἐπὶ δὲ τῆς ἀκροπόλεώς ἐστιν ἱερὸν καὶ ἄγαλμα Ἀθηνᾶς, καὶ Ἔρωτός ἐστιν ἐν Λεύκτροις ναὸς καὶ ἄλσος· ὕδωρ δὲ ὥρᾳ χειμῶνος διαρρεῖ τὸ ἄλσος, τὰ δὲ φύλλα τῷ ἦρι ἀπὸ τῶν δένδρων πίπτοντα οὐκ ἂν ὑπὸ τοῦ ὕδατος οὐδὲ πλεονάσαντος παρενεχθείη.
On the acropolis there is a sanctuary and image of Athena, and there is a temple and grove of Eros in Leuctra; and in the winter season, water flows through the grove, but the leaves that fall from the trees in spring would not be carried away by the water, not even if it flooded.
