§3.18.10ἀνέχουσιν ἔμπροσθεν αὐτόν, κατὰ ταὐτὰ δὲ καὶ ὀπίσω, Χάριτές τε δύο καὶ Ὧραι δύο·
They support it in front, and likewise also behind: two Graces and two Horae.
ἐν ἀριστερᾷ δὲ Ἔχιδνα ἕστηκε καὶ Τυφώς, ἐν δεξιᾷ δὲ Τρίτωνες.
On the left stands Echidna and Typhos, and on the right Tritons.
τὰ δὲ ἐπειργασμένα καθʼ ἕκαστον ἐπʼ ἀκριβὲς διελθεῖν ὄχλον τοῖς ἐπιλεξομένοις παρέξειν ἔμελλεν· ὡς δὲ δηλῶσαι συλλαβόντι, ἐπεὶ μηδὲ ἄγνωστα τὰ πολλὰ ἦν, Ταϋγέτην θυγατέρα Ἄτλαντος καὶ ἀδελφὴν αὐτῆς Ἀλκυόνην φέρουσι Ποσειδῶν καὶ Ζεύς.
To go through the details of the reliefs individually with precision was bound to cause annoyance to readers; but to explain them in summary, since most of them are not unknown: Poseidon and Zeus are carrying Taygete, daughter of Atlas, and her sister Alcyone.
ἐπείργασται δὲ καὶ Ἄτλας καὶ Ἡρακλέους μονομαχία πρὸς Κύκνον καὶ ἡ παρὰ Φόλῳ τῶν Κενταύρων μάχη.
There is also represented Atlas, and the single combat of Heracles against Cycnus, and the battle of the Centaurs at Pholus' place.
§3.18.11τὸν δὲ Μίνω καλούμενον Ταῦρον οὐκ οἶδα ἀνθʼ ὅτου πεποίηκε Βαθυκλῆς δεδεμένον τε καὶ ἀγόμενον ὑπὸ Θησέως ζῶντα· καὶ Φαιάκων χορός ἐστιν ἐπὶ τῷ θρόνῳ καὶ ᾄδων ὁ Δημόδοκος· Περσέως τε τὸ ἔργον πεποίηται τὸ ἐς Μέδουσαν.
I do not know for what reason Bathycles has depicted the Taurus called Minos' bound and led alive by Theseus; and there is a dance of the Phaeacians on the throne, and Demodocus singing; and the deed of Perseus against Medusa is represented.
παρέντι δὲ Ἡρακλέους μάχην πρὸς Θούριον τῶν γιγάντων καὶ Τυνδάρεω πρὸς Εὔρυτον, ἔστιν ἁρπαγὴ τῶν Λευκίππου θυγατέρων· Διόνυσον δὲ καὶ Ἡρακλέα, τὸν μὲν παῖδα ἔτι ὄντα ἐς οὐρανόν ἐστιν Ἑρμῆς φέρων, Ἀθηνᾶ δὲ ἄγουσα Ἡρακλέα συνοικήσοντα ἀπὸ τούτου θεοῖς.
If one passes over the battle of Heracles against Thourios of the giants and that of Tyndareus against Eurytus, there is the rape of the daughters of Leucippus; and as for Dionysus and Heracles, Hermes is carrying the former, while he is still a child, to heaven, and Athena is leading Heracles to dwell henceforth with the gods.
§3.18.12παραδίδωσι δὲ καὶ Πηλεὺς Ἀχιλλέα τραφησόμενον παρὰ Χίρωνι, ὃς καὶ διδάξαι λέγεται· Κέφαλος δὲ τοῦ κάλλους ἕνεκα ὑπὸ Ἡμέρας ἐστὶν ἡρπασμένος, καὶ ἐς τὸν γάμον τὸν Ἁρμονίας δῶρα κομίζουσιν οἱ θεοί.
Peleus also delivers Achilles to be brought up by Chiron, who is also said to have taught him; and Cephalus is carried off by Hemera on account of his beauty, and the gods are bringing gifts to the wedding of Harmonia.
καὶ Ἀχιλλέως μονομαχία πρὸς Μέμνονα ἐπείργασται, Διομήδην τε Ἡρακλῆς τὸν Θρᾷκα καὶ ἐπʼ Εὐήνῳ τῷ ποταμῷ Νέσσον τιμωρούμενος.
And the single combat of Achilles against Memnon is represented, and Heracles punishing the Thracian Diomedes and Nessus at the river Evenus.
Ἑρμῆς δὲ παρʼ Ἀλέξανδρον κριθησομένας ἄγει τὰς θεάς, Ἄδραστος δὲ καὶ Τυδεὺς Ἀμφιάραον καὶ Λυκοῦργον τὸν Πρώνακτος μάχης καταπαύουσιν.
And Hermes leads the goddesses to Alexander to be judged, and Adrastus and Tydeus stop Amphiaraus and Lycurgus son of Pronax from fighting.
§3.18.13Ἥρα δὲ ἀφορᾷ πρὸς Ἰὼ τὴν Ἰνάχου βοῦν οὖσαν ἤδη, καὶ Ἀθηνᾶ διώκοντα ἀποφεύγουσά ἐστιν Ἥφαιστον.
And Hera looks at Io, daughter of Inachus, who is already a cow, and Athena is fleeing from Hephaestus, who is pursuing her.
ἐπὶ δὲ τούτοις Ἡρακλέους πεποίηται τῶν ἔργων τὸ ἐς τὴν ὕδραν καὶ ὡς ἀνήγαγε τοῦ Ἅιδου τὸν κύνα.
And upon these, of the labors of Heracles, the one against the hydra is made, and how he brought up the dog of Hades.
Ἀναξίας δὲ καὶ Μνασίνους, τούτων μὲν ἐφʼ ἵππου καθήμενός ἐστιν ἑκάτερος, Μεγαπένθην δὲ τὸν Μενελάου καὶ Νικόστρατον ἵππος εἷς φέρων ἐστίν.
And as for Anaxias and Mnasinous, each of these is sitting on a horse, but as for Megapenthes, the son of Menelaus, and Nicostratus, a single horse is carrying them.
ἀναιρεῖ δὲ καὶ Βελλεροφόντης τὸ ἐν Λυκίᾳ θηρίον, καὶ Ἡρακλῆς τὰς Γηρυόνου βοῦς ἐλαύνει.
Bellerophon also slays the beast in Lycia, and Heracles drives the cattle of Geryon.
§3.18.14τοῦ θρόνου δὲ πρὸς τοῖς ἄνω πέρασιν ἐφʼ ἵππων ἑκατέρωθέν εἰσιν οἱ Τυνδάρεω παῖδες· καὶ σφίγγες τέ εἰσιν ὑπὸ τοῖς ἵπποις καὶ θηρία ἄνω θέοντα, τῇ μὲν πάρδαλις, κατὰ δὲ τὸν Πολυδεύκην λέαινα.
At the upper limits of the throne, on horses, on either side, are the sons of Tyndareus; and there are sphinxes under the horses, and wild beasts running upwards: on one side a leopard, and on the side of Polydeuces a lioness.
ἀνωτάτω δὲ χορὸς ἐπὶ τῷ θρόνῳ πεποίηται, Μάγνητες οἱ συνειργασμένοι Βαθυκλεῖ τὸν θρόνον.
And at the very top, a dance is represented on the throne: the Magnesians who helped Bathycles make the throne.
§3.18.15ὑπελθόντι δὲ ὑπὸ τὸν θρόνον τὰ ἔνδον ἀπὸ τῶν Τριτώνων ὑός ἐστι θήρα τοῦ Καλυδωνίου καὶ Ἡρακλῆς ἀποκτείνων τοὺς παῖδας τοὺς Ἄκτορος, Κάλαϊς δὲ καὶ Ζήτης τὰς Ἁρπυίας Φινέως ἀπελαύνουσιν· Πειρίθους τε καὶ Θησεὺς ἡρπακότες εἰσὶν Ἑλένην καὶ ἄγχων Ἡρακλῆς τὸν λέοντα, Τιτυὸν δὲ Ἀπόλλων τοξεύει καὶ Ἄρτεμις· §3.18.16Ἡρακλέους τε πρὸς Ὄρειον Κένταυρον μάχη πεποίηται καὶ Θησέως πρὸς Ταῦρον τὸν Μίνω.
And to one going under the throne, to examine the parts inside from the Tritons, there is the hunt of the Calydonian boar, and Heracles killing the sons of Actor, and Calais and Zetes driving away the Harpies from Phineus; and Pirithous and Theseus have carried off Helen, and Heracles is choking the lion, and Apollo and Artemis are shooting Tityus with arrows; and the battle of Heracles against the Centaur Oreius is represented, and that of Theseus against the Taurus of Minos.
πεποίηται δὲ καὶ ἡ πρὸς Ἀχελῷον Ἡρακλέους πάλη καὶ τὰ λεγόμενα ἐς Ἥραν, ὡς ὑπὸ Ἡφαίστου δεθείη, καὶ ὃν Ἄκαστος ἔθηκεν ἀγῶνα ἐπὶ πατρὶ καὶ τὰ ἐς Μενέλαον καὶ τὸν Αἰγύπτιον Πρωτέα ἐν Ὀδυσσείᾳ.
Represented also is the wrestling of Heracles against Achelous, and the story told about Hera, how she was bound by Hephaestus, and the games which Acastus held in honor of his father, and the adventures of Menelaus and the Egyptian Proteus in the Odyssey.
τελευταῖα Ἄδμητός τε ζευγνύων ἐστὶν ὑπὸ τὸ ἅρμα κάπρον καὶ λέοντα καὶ οἱ Τρῶες ἐπιφέροντες χοὰς Ἕκτορι.
Last are Admetus yoking a boar and a lion to his chariot, and the Trojans offering libations to Hector.
