Near the statues of Pausanias is an image of Aphrodite Ambologera (Postponer of Old Age), set up in accordance with an oracle, and other images of Hypnos and Thanatos; and they believe them to be brothers in accordance with the verses in the Iliad.
As you go towards the place called Alpium, there is a temple of Athena Ophthalmitis (Of the Eye); and they say that Lycurgus dedicated it after having one of his eyes knocked out by Alcander, because the laws he established happened not to be pleasing to Alcander.
Having fled to this place, while the Lacedaemonians defended him so that he would not lose his remaining eye as well, he thus built the temple of Athena Ophthalmitis.
As you go forward from here, there is a sanctuary of Ammon; and from the beginning the Lacedaemonians appear to have used the oracle in Libya more than any other Greeks.
It is also said that when Lysander was besieging Aphytis in Pallene, Ammon appeared to him by night and declared that it would be better for both him and Lacedaemon if they ceased from the war against the Aphytians; and so Lysander broke up the siege and led the Lacedaemonians to worship the god even more, while the Aphytians worship Ammon no less than the Ammonians of Libya do.
The story about Artemis Knagia is told as follows: they say that Knageus, a local man, marched against Aphidna together with the Dioscuri, and having been taken prisoner in the battle and sold into Crete, he lived as a slave there, where the Cretans had a sanctuary of Artemis; in course of time he escaped, carrying off the maiden who was priestess and taking the image with them as they went.
Because of this they say they name her Artemis Knagia.
But to me this Knageus seems to have arrived in Crete in some other way, and not as the Lacedaemonians say, since I do not believe that a battle took place at Aphidna at all, as Theseus was held in Thesprotis and the Athenians were not in agreement but rather inclined in their favors towards Menestheus.
Indeed, even if a conflict had occurred, one would not believe that prisoners were taken from those who were victorious, especially since the victory was so complete that Aphidna itself was captured.
So much for these matters.
As you go down from Sparta to Amyclae, there is a river Tiasa; and they believe Tiasa to be a daughter of Eurotas; and beside it is a sanctuary of the Graces, Phaenna and Cleta, just as Alcman also wrote in his poems.
They believe that Lacedaemon founded the sanctuary here for the Graces and gave them these names.
Worth seeing in Amyclae is a pentathlete on a stele, named Aenetus; they say that after he won a victory at Olympia, his life came to an end while he was still being crowned.
There is therefore an image of him, and also bronze tripods; and they say that the older of them are a tithe from the war against the Messenians.
Under the first tripod stands a statue of Aphrodite, and under the second an Artemis, which themselves and their reliefs are the work of Gitiadas; the third is by Callon of Aegina, and under it stands a statue of Core, daughter of Demeter.
Aristandrus of Paros and Polyclitus of Argos made, the former a woman holding a lyre, representing Sparta, and Polyclitus an Aphrodite who is called "beside the Amyclaean." These tripods excel the others in size and were dedicated from the victory at Aegospotami.
Dedicated by Bathycles the Magnesian, who made the throne of the Amyclaean, upon the completed throne are the Graces and an image of Artemis Leucophryene.
Who this Bathycles had been a disciple of, and during whose reign over the Lacedaemonians he made the throne, I pass over; but I saw the throne and will write what it was like.
