From there, for those going along the road called Coele, there is a temple of Dionysus on the right; and they say that the image is from Euboea.
For when the shipwreck near Caphareus befell the Greeks as they were returning from Ilion, cold and hunger oppressed those of the Argives who were able to escape to the land.
When they prayed for one of the gods to become a savior in their present difficulties, immediately as they advanced there appeared to them a cave of Dionysus, and there was an image of the god in the cave; at that time wild goats, fleeing the storm, had gathered into it.
The Argives, having slaughtered these, feasted on the meat and used the skins instead of clothing.
When the storm ceased and they had repaired their ships and were returning home, they brought along the wooden image from the cave; and they still continue to honor it to this day.
Nearest to the temple of Dionysus you will see the house of Adrastus, and further from this a sanctuary of Amphiaraus, and opposite the sanctuary the tomb of Eriphyle.
Next to these is a precinct of Asclepius, and after these a sanctuary of Baton.
Baton was of the same family as Amphiaraus, of the Melampodidae, and when Amphiaraus went out to battle, Baton drove his horses; and when the rout from the wall of the Thebans occurred, a chasm in the earth opened, receiving Amphiaraus and his chariot, and swallowed up this Baton as well.
For one returning from Coele, they say there is the tomb of Hyrnetho.
If indeed it is empty and otherwise made in memory of the woman, they speak what is likely; but if they think that the corpse of Hyrnetho lies here, I for my part do not believe them, but let anyone believe who has not learned the affairs of the Epidaurians.
The most famous image of the sanctuaries of Asclepius among the Argives in our time is a seated Asclepius of white stone, and beside him stands Hygeia; and Xenophilus and Straton, who made the statues, also sit.
Originally Sphyrus founded the sanctuary, who was a son of Machaon, and a brother of Alexanor who has honors among the Sicyonians in Titane.
As for Artemis Pheraea—for the Argives also worship Pheraean Artemis in the same way as the Athenians and Sicyonians—they also say that the image was brought from Pherae in Thessaly.
In these matters I do not agree with them; for the Argives say that there is a monument in Argos of Deianeira the daughter of Oeneus, and of Helenus the son of Priam, and that an image of Athena lies among them which was carried out of Ilion and caused Ilion to be captured.
Now the Palladion—for so it is called—is clear to have been carried to Italy by Aeneas; and as for Deianeira, we know that her death occurred around Trachis and not in Argos, and her tomb is near Heracleia under Mount Oeta.
The account has already shown for me, concerning Helenus the son of Priam, that he went to Epirus with Pyrrhus the son of Achilles, and was guardian to Pyrrhus' children while living with Andromache, and that the land called Cestrine took its name from Cestrinus the son of Helenus.
Indeed, it has not escaped the notice of the guides of the Argives themselves that not everything they say is spoken in truth, but they say it nevertheless; for it is not an easy thing to persuade the multitude to change their minds to the opposite of what they believe.
There are other things worth seeing for the Argives: an underground building, upon which was the bronze chamber that Acrisius once made for the guarding of his daughter; and Perilaus demolished it when he became tyrant.
There is, then, this building, and the monument of Crotopus, and the temple of Dionysus Cresius.
For they say that when he fought against Perseus and came again to a resolution of the enmity, he was greatly honored by the Argives in other ways and this choice precinct was given to him; and it was later named Cresius because he buried Ariadne there after her death.
Lyceas says that when the temple was being rebuilt for the second time, a clay coffin was found, and it belonged to Ariadne; and he said that both he himself and other Argives saw the coffin.
Near the temple of Dionysus is also a temple of Aphrodite Urania.
