They call the acropolis Larissa after the daughter of Pelasgus; after her, also, two of the cities in Thessaly were named, the one on the sea and the one by the Peneus.
For those ascending to the acropolis there is a sanctuary of Acraean Hera, and there is also a temple of Apollo, which Pythaeus is said to have been the first to build upon his arrival from Delphi.
The image now is of bronze and standing, called Apollo Deiradiotes, because this place is also called Deiras.
His method of divination—for it still divines even down to our time—is established in this manner.
There is a woman who prophesies, being barred from the bed of a husband; each month, when a female lamb is sacrificed at night, the woman, having tasted of the blood, becomes possessed by the god.
Adjacent to the temple of Apollo Deiradiotes is a sanctuary of Athena called Oxyderces, a dedication of Diomedes, because the goddess once took away the mist from his eyes when he was fighting in Ilion; and adjacent to it is the stadium, in which they hold the contest for Nemean Zeus and the Heraea.
For those going to the acropolis there is on the left of the road a monument of the sons of Aegyptus as well here.
For their heads are here apart from their bodies, and the rest of their bodies are apart in Lerna; for the murder of the youths was indeed wrought in Lerna, and when they had died, the women cut off their heads as a proof to their father of what they had dared.
On the summit of Larissa is a temple of Zeus surnamed Larissaeus, having no roof; and the image, made of wood, was no longer standing upon its pedestal.
There is also a temple of Athena worth seeing; in it lie other dedications and especially a wooden image of Zeus, which has two eyes just as we are naturally made, and a third upon its forehead.
They say that this Zeus was the ancestral god of Priam, the son of Laomedon, set up in the open air of his courtyard, and when Ilion was being captured by the Greeks, Priam fled for refuge to this altar.
When they were dividing the spoils, Sthenelus the son of Capaneus took it, and for this reason it is dedicated here; and one might infer that he has three eyes for the following reason.
That Zeus reigns in heaven is a story common to all men.
But of the one whom they say rules beneath the earth, there is a verse of Homer which names this one also Zeus: "Both underworld Zeus and dread Persephone.
"
"And Aeschylus the son of Euphorion calls the god in the sea also Zeus.
Whoever it was who made the image, therefore, made him seeing with three eyes, inasmuch as this same god rules in the three said shares of the universe.
There are roads from Argos to other parts of the Peloponnese, and towards Arcadia to Tegea.
On the right is Mount Lycone, having mostly cypress trees.
On the peak of the mountain is built a sanctuary of Artemis Orthia, and images of Apollo, Leto, and Artemis have been made of white stone; they say they are the works of Polyclitus.
For those who have descended from the mountain, there is again on the left of the highway a temple of Artemis.
A little further on, on the right of the road, is a mountain called Chaon, and under it grow cultivated trees, and here the water of the Erasinus rises to the light; until then it flows from Stymphalus in Arcadia, just as the Rheiti flow from the Euripus towards Eleusis and the sea there.
Near the outlets of the Erasinus at the mountain, they sacrifice to Dionysus and Pan, and for Dionysus they also hold a festival called Tyrbe.
For those returning to the road to Tegea, there is on the right of the place called Trochus, Cenchreae.
They do not say for what reason the place got its name, unless indeed this too was named after Cenchrias, the son of Peirene.
And there are common graves here of the Argives who conquered the Lacedaemonians in battle around Hysiae.
I found that this contest occurred when Pisistratus was archon at Athens, in the fourth year of the twenty-seventh Olympiad in which Eurybotus the Athenian won the stadium race.
For one descending to the lower ground, there are the ruins of Hysiae, once a city in Argolis, and they say that the defeat befell the Lacedaemonians here.
