And it is possible for anyone who wishes to compare and count both those who assembled at Thermopylae against King Xerxes and those who were gathered then against the Galatians.
For against the Mede there arrived the following of the Greeks: Lacedaemonians with Leonidas, no more than three hundred; Tegeans, five hundred, and an equal number from Mantinea; and from the Orchomenians of Arcadia, one hundred and twenty, and from the other cities in Arcadia, one thousand; eighty from Mycenae, and two hundred from Phlius, and double this number of Corinthians; and there also arrived seven hundred of the Boeotians from Thespiae and four hundred from Thebes.
And one thousand of the Phocians were guarding the path on Mount Oeta, and let their number also be added to the whole Greek force.
As for the Locrians under Mount Cnemis, Herodotus indeed did not bring them into a number, but said that they arrived from all their cities; but it is possible to estimate their number also very close to the truth; for the Athenians arrived at Marathon with the class unfit for service and with slaves, not more than nine thousand, so one would not number the fighting force of the Locrians that went to Thermopylae as more than six thousand.
In this way the entire army would become eleven thousand two hundred.
But even these do not appear to have remained for the whole time on guard at Thermopylae; for except for the Lacedaemonians themselves, the Thespians, and the Mycenaeans, the rest left before the end of the battle.
But against the barbarians from the Ocean, the following Greeks arrived at Thermopylae: ten thousand hoplites and five hundred cavalry from the Boeotians; and Cephisodotus, Thearidas, Diogenes, and Lysander were Boeotarchs.
And from the Phocians, five hundred cavalry and their infantry numbered up to three thousand; and the generals of the Phocians were Critobulus and Antiochus.
And Meidias led the Locrians facing the island of Atalante; and their number was seven hundred, and they had no cavalry.
And from the Megarians there arrived four hundred hoplites; these were led by †Hippikon the Megarian.
And the largest army was that of the Aetolians, and equipped for every kind of battle; they do not say how many cavalry, but the light-armed were seven hundred and ninety, and those serving as hoplites were more than seven thousand in number; and Polyarchus, Polyphron, and Lacrates led the Aetolians.
And the general of the Athenians was Callippus, the son of Moirocles, as I have also shown in the earlier parts of my narrative, and their force consisted of all the seaworthy triremes, five hundred for the cavalry, and one thousand were stationed among the infantry; and these held the command according to ancient prestige.
And as mercenary forces of the kings, five hundred came from Macedonia and an equal number in count from Asia; and the commander of those sent by Antigonus was Aristodemus, a Macedonian, and of those sent by Antiochus and from Asia, Telesarchus, of the Syrians on the Orontes.
