The Tribes of Aquitania, Their Gold Mines, and Hot Springs

Passage 130 of 577 · Greek

Summary

This section details the geographical and ethnic traits of Aquitania, introducing the fourteen Gallic tribes situated between the Garunas and Liger rivers, as well as the trading ports of Burdigala and Corbilo. It also describes the highly productive gold mines of the Tarbelli and the notable hot springs of the inland regions.

Next we must speak of the Aquitanians and of the fourteen Gallic tribes which have been additionally assigned to them, who dwell between the Garunas and the Liger; some of these tribes even touch upon the region of the river Rhodanus and the plains near Narbonitis.
ἁπλῶς γὰρ εἰπεῖν, οἱ Ἀκυιτανοὶ διαφέρουσι τοῦ Γαλατικοῦ φύλου κατά τε τὰς τῶν σωμάτων κατασκευὰς καὶ κατὰ τὴν γλῶτταν, ἐοίκασι δὲ μᾶλλον Ἴβηρσιν.
To speak simply, the Aquitanians differ from the Gallic race both in their bodily constitutions and in their language, and they resemble the Iberians more.
ὁρίζονται δὲ τῷ Γαρούνᾳ ποταμῷ ἐντὸς τούτου καὶ τῆς Πυρήνης οἰκοῦντες.
They are bounded by the river Garunas, dwelling within this and the Pyrenees.
ἔστι δὲ ἔθνη τῶν Ἀκυιτανῶν πλείω μὲν τῶν εἴκοσι, μικρὰ δὲ καὶ ἄδοξα τὰ πολλά, μὲν παρωκεανιτικὰ τὰ δὲ εἰς τὴν μεσόγαιαν καὶ τὰ ἄκρα τῶν Κεμμένων ὀρῶν μέχρι Τεκτοσάγων ἀνέχοντα.
There are more than twenty tribes of the Aquitanians, but most of them are small and obscure; some dwell along the ocean, while others extend into the interior and to the heights of the Cemmenus Mountains as far as the Tectosages.
ἐπειδὴ δὲ μικρὰ μερὶς ἦν ἡ τοσαύτη, προσέθεσαν καὶ τὴν μεταξὺ τοῦ Γαρούνα καὶ τοῦ Λίγηρος.
But since this portion was so small, they added to it the territory between the Garunas and the Liger.
These rivers are in a way parallel to the Pyrenees and form with it two parallelogram-shaped tracts, bounded on the other sides by the ocean and the Cemmenus Mountains; the navigation of each of the two rivers is about two thousand stadia.
The Garunas, increased by three rivers, empties into the sea between the Bituriges who are called Uisci and the Santoni, both of whom are Gallic tribes; for indeed this tribe of the Bituriges alone is settled among the Aquitanians as a foreign race, and does not pay tribute to them, but has an emporium, Burdigala, situated on a certain lagoon formed by the outlets of the river.
ὁ δὲ Λίγηρ μεταξὺ Πικτόνων τε καὶ Ναμνιτῶν ἐκβάλλει.
The Liger empties between the Pictones and the Namnetes.
Formerly, Corbilo was an emporium on this river, concerning which Polybius has spoken, mentioning the mythical stories told by Pytheas, namely, that of the Massaliotes who associated with Scipio, none had anything worth remembering to say when questioned by Scipio about Britain, nor had those from Narbo nor those from Corbilo, which were the best cities in this region, yet Pytheas dared to tell so many falsehoods.
τῶν δὲ Σαντόνων πόλις ἐστὶ Μεδιολάνιον.
The city of the Santoni is Mediolanium.
ἔστι δʼ ἡ μὲν παρωκεανῖτις τῶν Ἀκυιτανῶν ἀμμώδης ἡ πλείστη καὶ λεπτή, κέγχρῳ τρέφουσα, τοῖς δὲ ἄλλοις καρποῖς ἀφορωτέρα.
Most of the ocean coast of the Aquitanians is sandy and thin, producing millet, but rather unfruitful in other crops.
ἐνταῦθα δʼ ἐστὶ καὶ ὁ κόλπος ὁ ποιῶν τὸν ἰσθμὸν πρὸς τὸν ἐν τῇ Ναρβωνίτιδι παραλίᾳ Γαλατικὸν κόλπον, ὁμώνυμος ἐκείνῳ καὶ αὐτός.
Here is also the gulf which forms the isthmus with the Gallic Gulf on the Narbonite coast, and is itself of the same name.
ἔχουσι δὲ Τάρβελλοι τὸν κόλπον, παρʼ οἷς ἐστι τὰ χρυσεῖα σπουδαιότατα πάντων· ἐν γὰρ βόθροις ὀρυχθεῖσιν ἐπὶ μικρὸν εὑρίσκονται καὶ χειροπληθεῖς χρυσίου πλάκες ἔσθʼ ὅτε μικρᾶς ἀποκαθάρσεως δεόμεναι.
The Tarbelli possess this gulf, in whose territory are the most valuable gold mines of all; for in shallow pits that are dug, slabs of gold as large as the hand are sometimes found, requiring but little refining.
τὸ δὲ λοιπὸν ψῆγμά ἐστι καὶ βῶλοι, καὶ αὗται κατεργασίαν οὐ πολλὴν ἔχουσαι.
The rest consists of dust and nuggets, and these too require not much working.
The interior and mountainous part has better land, such as the territory of the Convenae (which means "assembled people") near the Pyrenees, in which is the city of Lugdunum and the hot springs of the Onesii, which are the most beautiful and consist of the most drinkable water; the country of the Ausci is also beautiful.

Notes

  1. 4.2.1ὧν ἔνια ἐπιλαμβάνει — The antecedent of the relative pronoun ὧν is the "fourteen Gallic tribes" (τετταρεσκαίδεκα Γαλατικῶν). The verb ἐπιλαμβάνει is used intransitively here in the sense of "reaches to" or "touches upon", governing the genitive τῆς τοῦ Ῥοδανοῦ ποταμίας.
  2. 4.2.1οὐ συντελεῖ αὐτοῖς — The verb συντελέω is construed here with the dative αὐτοῖς (referring to the Aquitanians), meaning "to pay tribute to" or "to contribute to the same administrative/political organization."
  3. 4.2.1οὐδεὶς εἶχε λέγειν — The verb ἔχω with the infinitive (λέγειν) expresses capability ("to be able to"). In the subsequent phrase starting with οὐδὲ τῶν ἐκ..., the subject and verb structure οὐδεὶς [τῶν ἐκ...] εἶχε λέγειν is omitted and understood in parallel.
  4. 4.2.1ὅ ἐστι συνηλύδων — The neuter singular relative pronoun ὅ refers not to the proper noun Κωνουενῶν itself, but to the semantic meaning of that name. συνηλύδων is the genitive plural of συνήλυς, meaning "assembled people" or "immigrants."
