Between the outlets of the Hebrus and the heights of the Pyrenees, on which the trophies of Pompey are set up, Tarraco is the first city; it is indeed without a harbor, but situated in a gulf, and adequately equipped in other respects, and at present no less populous than Carthage.
For it is naturally well suited for the stays of the governors, and is as it were a metropolis not only of Nearer Iberia but also of most of Further Iberia.
The Gymnensian Islands lying near and Ebysus, islands of note, suggest the favorable situation of the city.
Eratosthenes says that it even has a naval station, though it is not very well favored even with anchorages, as Artemidorus has said in contradiction.
And indeed the whole coast from the Pillars as far as here is poorly provided with harbors, but from here on the parts that follow are well-harbored, and there is a fertile country of the Leeetani, Lartolaietae, and others of this kind, as far as Emporium.
This is a foundation of the Massaliotes, distant about forty stadia from the Pyrenees and from the boundaries between Iberia and Celtica; and this whole region is fertile and well-harbored.
And here is also the small town of Rhode, a foundation of the Emporitans, though some say it was of the Rhodians; and both here and in Emporium they worship the Ephesian Artemis; and we shall tell the cause in our account of Massalia.
The Emporitans formerly lived on a small island lying in front of the coast, which is now called Old City, but now they live on the mainland.
And it is a double city, divided by a wall, formerly having some of the Indicetae as neighbors, who, although they lived under their own laws, nevertheless wished to have a common wall of enclosure with the Greeks for the sake of safety; and in time they came together into the same mixed government made up of both barbarian and Greek customs, which indeed happened in many other places.
And a river also flows nearby, having its sources in the Pyrenees, and its mouth is a harbor for the Emporitans.
The Emporitans are skilled linen-weavers; and they hold the inland country, part of which is fertile, while the other is spart-bearing of the less useful and marshy rush, and they call it the Juncarian Plain; and some also pasture on the heights of the Pyrenees as far as the trophies of Pompey, through which people walk into what is called Further Iberia from Italy, and especially Baetica.
And this road sometimes approaches the sea, and sometimes is distant from it, and especially in the western parts.
It runs to Tarraco from the trophies of Pompey through the Juncarian Plain, and Vetera, and the plain called Marathon in the Latin tongue because it produces much marathon; and from Tarraco to the crossing of the Hebrus at the city of Dertossa; thence, carried through Saguntum and the city of Saetabis, it gradually recedes from the sea and joins the Spartarian, or as it were Rush-Plain, as it is called; and this is large and waterless, producing the spart used for rope-weaving, which is exported to every place, and especially to Italy.
Formerly, indeed, the road happened to be through the middle of the plain and Egelasta, difficult and long, but now they have made it along the parts near the sea, only touching on the Spartarian Plain, but tending to the same destination as the former, the places about Castulo and Obulco, through which is the road to Corduba and Gadeira, the greatest of the emporiums.
And Obulco is about three hundred stadia distant from Corduba.
And the historians say that Caesar came from Rome in twenty-seven days to Obulco and the camp there, when he was about to join in the war around Munda.
