Then is Joppa, at which the coast-line from Egypt bends signally toward the north, having previously extended toward the east.
Here some mythologize that Andromeda was exposed to the sea-monster; and the place is sufficiently on an elevation so that they say Jerusalem, the metropolis of the Jews, is visible from it; and indeed, the Jews have used this as a station for ships when they came down as far as the sea; but the stations of pirates are obviously pirate-strongholds.
And to these pirates belonged both Carmel and the forest; and indeed, this place became so well-peopled that from the neighboring village Jamnia and the settlements around it, forty thousand men could be armed.
From here to Mount Casius near Pelusium is a little more than a thousand stadia, and another three hundred to Pelusium itself.
And in between is also Gadaris, which itself the Jews also appropriated; then Azotus and Ascalon.
And from Jamnia to Azotus and Ascalon are about two hundred stadia.
And the country of the Ascalonites is good for onions, though the town is small.
From here was Antiochus the philosopher, who lived a little before our time.
And from Gadara came both Philodemus the Epicurean, and Meleager, and Menippus the jester, and Theodorus the rhetorician in our time.
Then near is the harbor of the Gazaeans; and the city also lies above it at a distance of seven stadia, having once been illustrious, but having been demolished by Alexander and remaining desert.
And from here there is said to be a passage of one thousand two hundred and sixty stadia to the city Ailana, which lies at the recess of the Arabian Gulf; and this gulf is double, one part extending toward the side of Arabia and Gaza, which they call Ailanitic after the city in it, and the other toward the side of Egypt near Heroonpolis, to which the transit from Pelusium is shorter; and the passages through desert and sandy places are made on camels; and the abundance of reptiles in them is also great.
And after Gaza is Raphia, where the battle occurred between Ptolemy the Fourth and Antiochus the Great.
Then Rhinocolura, so called from the people with mutilated noses who were settled there in ancient times; for one of the Ethiopians, having invaded Egypt, instead of putting the malefactors to death, cut off their noses and settled them here, as they would no longer dare to do evil because of the shame of their appearance.
Now this region from Gaza is all wretched and sandy; and still more so is the next region lying above it, which has the Sirbonis Lake lying in a way parallel to the sea, leaving between them a narrow passage as far as the so-called outlet, of a length of about two hundred stadia and a maximum width of fifty; but the outlet has been silted up.
Then continuous with this is another such region extending to Casius, and from there to Pelusium.
Casius is a sandy, waterless hill forming a cape, where the body of Pompey the Great lies and there is a temple of Zeus Casius; and near it the Great Pompey was slaughtered, having been treacherously murdered by the Egyptians.
Then is the road to Pelusium, on which are Gerra and the so-called palisade of Chabrias, and the pits near Pelusium, which the Nile makes by overflowing, as the places are by nature low-lying and marshy.
Such is Phoenicia.
And Artemidorus says that to Pelusium from Orthosia is three thousand six hundred and fifty stadia for one who follows the curves of the gulfs; and from Melanae or Melaniae in Cilicia, near Celenderis, to the boundaries of Cilicia and Syria is one thousand nine hundred; and from there to the Orontes, five hundred and twenty; and then to Orthosia, one thousand one hundred and thirty.
