Then the island of Elaeoussa after Corycus, lying close to the mainland, which Archelaus settled and where he built his palace, having received the whole of rugged Cilicia except Seleucia, in the same manner as Amyntas formerly held it, and even before him Cleopatra.
For since the place was naturally well-adapted for piracy both by land and by sea (by land because of the size of the mountains and the tribes lying above them, who possessed large and easily-overrun plains and farmlands; and by sea because of the abundance of shipbuilding timber, harbors, fortresses, and hiding-places), it seemed preferable, for all such purposes, that these places should be ruled by a king rather than be under the Roman governors sent for the administration of justice, who were neither likely to be always present nor equipped with arms.
In this way Archelaus received rugged Cilicia in addition to Cappadocia.
And the boundary of this region between Soli and Elaeoussa is the river Lamos and a village of the same name.
Along the foothills of the Taurus is Olympus, both a mountain and a fortress of the same name, which was the stronghold of the pirate Zenicetus, from which all Lycia, Pamphylia, Pisidia, and Milyas can be surveyed.
But when the mountain was taken by Isauricus, Zenicetus burned himself along with his entire household.
Corycus, Phaselis, and many places of the Pamphylians also belonged to him, but Isauricus captured them all.
After the Lamos comes the notable city of Soli, the beginning of the other Cilicia, that around Issus, a foundation of the Achaeans and of the Rhodians from Lindus.
Into this city, which had suffered from depopulation, Pompey the Great settled those of the surviving pirates whom he judged most worthy of preservation and some consideration, and renamed it Pompeiopolis.
From here have come notable men: Chrysippus the Stoic philosopher, whose father was a Tarsian who had migrated from there; Philemon the comic poet; and Aratus, who composed the "Phenomena" in hexameters.
Then Zephyrium, of the same name as the one near the Calycadnus.
Then Anchiale, slightly above the sea, a foundation of Sardanapalus, as Aristobulus says.
And there, he says, is the monument of Sardanapalus and a stone figure snapping the fingers of his right hand together, and there is an inscription in Assyrian letters to this effect: "Sardanapalus, the son of Anacyndaraxes, built Anchiale and Tarsus in one day.
Eat, drink, play, since all other things are not worth this," meaning the snapping of the fingers.
Choirilus also mentions these things; and indeed, these verses are widely circulated: "These things I have, what I ate and wantonness enjoyed, and the sweet pleasures I felt with love; but those many and prosperous possessions have been left behind." Above Anchiale lies Cyinda, a fortress which the Macedonians once used as a treasury; and Eumenes, having revolted from Antigonus, carried off the funds.
Still higher above this and Soli is a mountainous country, in which is the city of Olbe, having a temple of Zeus, a foundation of Ajax the son of Teucer.
And the priest became the ruler of rugged Cilicia; then many tyrants attacked the country, and pirate bands were organized.
After the destruction of these, already in our time, they called this the dynasty of Teucer, which was the same as the priesthood; and most of those who served as priests were named Teucer or Ajax.
But Aba, the daughter of Zenophanes, one of the tyrants, having entered into this family by marriage, herself held the rule, her father having previously taken it in the guise of a guardian; and later, Antony and Cleopatra also bestowed it upon her as a favor, having been won over by her flatteries.
Afterwards she was deposed, but the rule remained to those of her family.
After Anchiale comes the mouth of the Cydnus at the place called Rhegma.
It is a marshy place which also has ancient docks, into which empty the Cydnus, which flows through the middle of Tarsus, having its sources in the Taurus which lies above the city; and the lake is the harbor of Tarsus.
