His son received the priesthood; then later Lycomedes, to whom another four schoeni were added; and when he too was overthrown, now Dyteutus, the son of Adiatorix, holds it, who is thought to have obtained this honor from Caesar Augustus on account of his merit.
For Caesar, after having led Adiatorix in triumph along with his children and wife, decided to put him to death along with the eldest of his children (and this man was the eldest), but when the second of his brothers claimed to the soldiers who were leading them away that he was the eldest, there was a dispute between both of them for a long time, until the parents persuaded Dyteutus to yield the victory to his younger brother; for they argued that he, being more advanced in age, would be a more suitable guardian for his mother and the remaining brother; and so the former died together with his father, while the latter was saved and obtained this honor.
For Caesar, having realized the truth after the men had already been executed, as it seems, was grieved, and regarded those who survived as worthy of benefit and care, giving them this honor.
Comana, then, is populous, and is a noteworthy emporium for those from Armenia; and during the exits of the goddess, men together with women assemble for the festival from all sides, both from the cities and from the country; and certain others are always residing there on account of vows, performing sacrifices to the goddess.
And the inhabitants live luxuriously, and all their properties are planted with vines, and there is a multitude of women who work with their bodies, of whom the majority are sacred.
For in a certain way the city is a little Corinth; for there too, on account of the multitude of courtesans, who were sacred to Aphrodite, many were those who resided and joined in the festivities in the place; and the merchants and soldiers were completely ruined, so that concerning them even such a proverb as this became current: "Not for every man is the voyage to Corinth.
"
"Such, then, is Comana.
But Pythodoris holds all the surrounding country, in which are Phanaroea, Zelitis, and Megalopolitis.
Concerning Phanaroea indeed it has been said; and Zelitis has a city Zela, fortified upon a mound of Semiramis, containing the temple of Anaitis, whom the Armenians also worship.
Thus the sacred rites are performed here with greater sanctity, and all the Pontic people make their oaths concerning the most important matters here; and the multitude of temple-slaves and the honors of the priests had, under the kings, the same form which we mentioned before, but now everything is in the power of Pythodoris.
But many have damaged and diminished both the multitude of temple-slaves and the rest of their wealth.
And the adjacent country was also diminished, having been divided into several principalities.
This is the so-called Zelitis.
For anciently the kings administered Zela not as a city, but as a temple of the Persian gods, and the priest was the master of everything; and it was inhabited by the multitude of temple-slaves, and the priest who was in great wealth, and to those around him no small amount of sacred land was subject, and belonged to the priest.
But Pompey assigned many districts to the place and named both this and Megalopolis a city, compounding this latter into one along with Culupene and Camisene, which border on Lesser Armenia and Laviansene, and possess rock salt and an ancient fortress, Camisa, which is now demolished; and the subsequent leaders of the Romans distributed these two polities, assigning some parts to the priests of Comana, some to the priest of Zela, and others to Ateporix, a man who was a dynast of the tetrarchical family of the Galatians; and when he died, it happened that this portion, which was not large, was under the Romans, being called a province (and the small town formed by the synoecism of Carana is a system by itself, from which also the country is called Caranitis), while the rest Pythodoris and Dyteutus hold.
