Θαλῆς δὲ πρῶτος παραδέδοται τὴν περὶ φύσεως ἱστορίαν τοῖς Ἕλλησιν ἐκφῆναι, πολλῶν μὲν καὶ ἄλλων προγεγονότων, ὡς καὶ Θεοφράστῳ δοκεῖ, αὐτὸς δὲ πολὺ διενεγκὼν ἐκείνων ὡς ἀποκρύψαι πάντας τοὺς πρὸ αὐτοῦ.
Fr. 40 Thales is recorded to have been the first to reveal the inquiry into nature to the Greeks; although many others had lived before him, as indeed Theophrastus thinks, yet he himself so far surpassed them as to obscure all those who came before him.
