Aristotle · Topics §5.6#1

Properties Derived from the Four Kinds of Opposites

Passage 50 of 94 · Greek

Summary

The author presents topics for refuting or establishing properties based on four relationships of opposite things: contraries, relatives, states and privations, and affirmations and negations.

Next, one must consider from opposite things, first from contraries. For refuting, if the contrary of the contrary is not its property; for then neither will the contrary of the contrary be its property.
For instance, since injustice is contrary to justice, and the worst to the best, but the best is not the property of justice, the worst would not be the property of injustice.
And for establishing, if the contrary of the contrary is its property; for then the contrary of the contrary will also be its property.
For instance, since evil is contrary to good, and the object of avoidance to the object of choice, but the object of choice is the property of good, the object of avoidance would be the property of evil.
Secondly, from relative things. For refuting, if the relative of the relative is not its property; for then neither will the relative of the relative be its property.
For instance, since double is spoken of in relation to half, and what exceeds in relation to what is exceeded, but what exceeds is not the property of double, what is exceeded would not be the property of half.
And for establishing, if the relative of the relative is its property; for then the relative of the relative will also be its property.
For instance, since double is spoken of in relation to half, and two in relation to one, but the property of double is as two to one, the property of half would be as one to two.
Thirdly, for refuting, if what is spoken of in accordance with a state is not the property of the state; for then neither will what is spoken of in accordance with a privation be the property of the privation.
And if what is spoken of in accordance with a privation is not the property of the privation, neither will what is spoken of in accordance with the state be the property of the state.
For instance, since "to be without sensation" is not said to be the property of deafness, neither would "to be a sensation" be the property of hearing.
And for establishing, if what is spoken of in accordance with a state is the property of the state; for then what is spoken of in accordance with a privation will also be the property of the privation.
And if what is spoken of in accordance with a privation is the property of the privation, what is spoken of in accordance with the state will also be the property of the state.
For instance, since "to see" is the property of sight, insofar as we have sight, "not to see" would be the property of blindness, insofar as we do not have sight though being naturally fitted to have it.
Next, from affirmations and negations, first from the predicates themselves.
This topic is useful only for refuting.
For instance, if the affirmation or what is spoken of in accordance with the affirmation is its property; for then neither its negation nor what is spoken of in accordance with the negation will be its property.
And if the negation or what is spoken of in accordance with the negation is its property, neither the affirmation nor what is spoken of in accordance with the affirmation will be its property.
For instance, since "animate" is the property of animal, "inanimate" would not be the property of animal.

Notes

  1. §5.6#1οὐδὲ γὰρ τοῦ ἐναντίου ἔσται τὸ ἐναντίον ἴδιον — Meaning "for neither will the contrary of the contrary be [the original's] property." Here, the first "τοῦ ἐναντίου" refers to the contrary of the subject, and "τὸ ἐναντίον" refers to the contrary of the property (or vice versa). Logically, it states the contrapositive: if the contrary property (the worst) is not the property of the contrary subject (injustice), then the original property (the best) cannot be the property of the original subject (justice).
  2. p.349τὸ ὡς δύο πρὸς ἕν — The adverbial phrase "ὡς δύο πρὸς ἕν" (as two to one) is substantivized by the neuter singular article "τὸ" to express the conceptual property of "being in the ratio of two to one."
  3. p.349πεφυκότες ἔχειν — The perfect active participle masculine plural nominative "πεφυκότες" (from φύω) modifies the implied "we" (the subject of "ἔχομεν"). It means "being naturally disposed to have [it]," grammatically defining the concept of "privation" (στέρησις) in Aristotelian philosophy, which is not a simple absence but the lack of a naturally expected quality.
