because of its mixture with the moisture arising from the woman.
Πρὸς δὲ τούτοις τοῖς πάθεσι καὶ τοσόνδε δεῖ κατανοεῖν, εἰ συμβαίνει, ὅταν δόξῃ ἐν τῷ ὕπνῳ πλησιάσαι τῷ ἀνδρί, πῶς ἔχουσα ἐξανίσταται, οἷον εἰ ἀσθενεστέρα, καὶ εἰ ἀεί, μὴ ὁτὲ μὲν ὁτὲ δ’ οὔ, ἢ ἐνίοτε καὶ ἰσχυροτέρα· εἰ δὲ μὴ ξηροτέρα τὸ πρῶτον, εἶτα ἐφυγραίνεται.
In addition to these conditions, one must also observe this much: if it happens, when she seems in sleep to approach a man, in what state she rises, for instance whether weaker, and whether always so, and not sometimes so and sometimes not, or sometimes even stronger; and whether she is not drier at first, and then becomes moist.
Δεῖ γὰρ ταῦτα συμβαίνειν τῇ γονίμῳ γυναικί.
For these things must happen to the fertile woman.
Τὸ μὲν γὰρ ἐκλύεσθαι σημαίνει προετικὸν εἶναι τὸ σῶμα σπέρματος ἀεί, τήν τε ποιοῦσαν ποιεῖ· καὶ σωματωδῶν δ’ οὐσῶν ἀθενεστέρα.
For to be weakened indicates that the body is always ready to discharge seed, and it makes active that which produces it; and when they are corporeal, she is weaker.
Τὸ δ’ ἀνόσως τοῦτο πάσχειν σημεῖον ὅτι κατὰ φύσιν καὶ ὃν δεῖ τρόπον ἡ ἄφοδος τούτου γίνεται· εἰ γὰρ μή, νοσώδης ἦν ἡ ἀρρωστία.
And to experience this without disease is a sign that the discharge of this takes place according to nature and in the proper manner; for if not, the weakness would be diseased.
Τὸ δέ ποτε καὶ ἰσχύειν μᾶλλον, καὶ ξηρὰν εἶναι τὴν ὑστέραν, εἶτ’ ἐφυγραίνεσθαι, σημεῖον ὅτι πᾶν τὸ σῶμα λαμβάνει καὶ ἀφανίζει, καὶ οὐ μόνον ἡ ὑστέρα καὶ τὸ σῶμα ἰσχύει.
And sometimes even to be stronger, and for the uterus to be dry and then become moist, is a sign that the whole body receives and assimilates it, and not only the uterus but also the body is strong.
Πνεύματί τε γὰρ ἕλκει ἡ ὑστέρα τὸ προσελθὸν ἔξωθεν αὐτῇ, ὥσπερ πρότερον εἴρηται.
For, as was said before, the uterus draws by breath that which approaches it from the outside.
Οὐ γὰρ εἰς αὐτὴν προΐεται, ἀλλ’ οὗ καὶ ὁ ἀνήρ.
For she does not discharge into herself, but where the man also does.
Ὅσα δὲ πνεύματι, πάντα ἰσχύϊ ἐργάζεται.
And whatever is done by breath, all works by strength.
Ὥστε δῆλον ὅτι καὶ τὸ σῶμα προσσπαστικὸν τῆς τοιαύτης.
So it is clear that the body of such a woman is also attractive of it.
Εἰσὶ δέ τινες αἳ πάσχουσί τι τοιοῦτον ὃ καλοῦσιν ἐξανεμοῦσθαι· δεῖ δὴ καὶ τοῦτο μὴ πάσχειν.
But there are some who experience a certain condition which they call "to be wind-blown"; indeed, she must not experience this either.
Ἔστι δὲ τὸ τοιοῦτον πάθος· ὅταν συγγένωνται τῷ ἀνδρί, οὔτε προϊέμεναι δῆλαι τὸ σπέρμα οὔτε κυΐσκονται, διὸ καὶ καλεῖται ἐξανεμοῦσθαι. Αἴτιον δὲ τοῦ πάθους ἡ ὑστέρα, ὅταν ᾖ λίαν ξηρά· ἑλκύσασα γὰρ πρὸς αὑτὴν τὸ ὑγρὸν ἀφίησιν ἔξω· τὸ δὲ κατασκελετεύεται, καὶ μικρόν τι γινόμενον ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἀπέπεσέ τε καὶ ἔλαθε διὰ μικρότητα ἐξιόν.
And such a condition is this: when they copulate with a man, they neither appear to discharge seed nor do they conceive, which is why it is called "to be wind-blown." And the cause of the condition is the uterus when it is too dry; for having drawn the moisture to itself, it discharges it outside; and it is dried up, and what becomes a small thing from it both falls away and escapes notice as it exits because of its smallness.
Καὶ ὅταν μὲν τοῦτο σφόδρα πάθῃ ἡ ὑστέρα καὶ γένηται ὑπέρξηρος, ταχύ τε ἀπέβαλε καὶ ταχὺ δῆλον γίνεται ὅτι οὐ κύει· ἐὰν δὲ μὴ σφόδρα ταχέως ταῦτα ποιῇ, ἐν τῷ μεταξὺ χρόνῳ δοκεῖ κύειν, ὃ ἂν ἔχῃ αὐτὴ πρὸς αὑτήν, ἕως ἂν ἀποβάλῃ.
And when the uterus experiences this severely and becomes extremely dry, it both discharges quickly and it quickly becomes clear that she is not pregnant; but if it does not do these things very quickly, in the intervening time she seems to be pregnant, because of what she holds within herself, until she discharges it.
Καὶ ὅμοια συμβαίνει ταχὺ ταύταις πάθη οἷα ταῖς ὀρθῶς κυούσαις, καὶ ἐὰν γίγνηται πολὺς χρόνος, αἴρεται ἡ ὑστέρα, ὥστε φανερῶς δοκεῖ κύειν, ἕως ἂν ἀποπέσῃ· τότε δ’ ὁμοία ἐγένετο οἵα πρὸ τοῦ ἦν.
And conditions similar to those of women who are properly pregnant quickly happen to them, and if a long time passes, the uterus rises, so that she clearly seems to be pregnant until it falls away; and then it becomes similar to what it was before.
Ἀναφέρουσι δὲ τοῦτο τὸ πάθος εἰς τὸ δαιμόνιον· ὅ ἐστι θεραπευτόν, ἐὰν μὴ φύσει τοιαύτη ᾖ σφόδρα πάσχουσα τὸ πάσχον.
And they attribute this condition to the divine; which is curable, unless the suffering part is by nature of such a kind as to experience this severely.
Σημεῖον δὲ τοῦ μὴ τοιαύτας εἶναι, ἐὰν φαίνωνται μὴ προϊέμεναι, ὅταν λάβωσι παρὰ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς καὶ μὴ συλλάβωσιν.
And a sign of their not being of such a kind is if they do not appear to discharge it when they receive it from the man and do not conceive.
