§10.3#1Περὶ μὲν οὖν τὸ στόμα τῶν ὑστερῶν ἐκ τούτων ἡ σκέψις ἐστίν, εἰ ἔχει ὡς δεῖ ἢ μή.
Therefore, concerning the mouth of the uterus, the investigation is from these things, whether it is as it should be or not.
Περὶ αὐτὴν δὲ τὴν ὑστέραν δεῖ συμβαίνειν τοιαῦτα μετὰ τὴν κάθαρσιν, πρῶτον μὲν ἐν τοῖς ὕπνοις ὡς συγγινομένην τῷ ἀνδρὶ καὶ προϊεμένην, ὡς ἂν εἰ παρεπλησίαζε, ῥᾳδίως· ἂν τοῦτο φαίνηται πλεονάκις πάσχουσα, ἄμεινον.
But concerning the uterus itself, such things must happen after the cleansing: first, in sleep, as if copulating with a man and discharging, as if he were approaching, easily; if she appears to experience this more often, it is better.
Καὶ ἀνισταμένην ὁτὲ μὲν δεῖσθαι θεραπείας οἵας ὅταν πλησιάσῃ ἀνδρί, ὁτὲ δὲ ξηρασίας· τὴν δὲ ξηρότητα ταύτην μὴ συνεχῆ, ἀλλ’ ὕστερον μετὰ τὴν ἔγερσιν ἐξυγραίνεσθαι ὁτὲ μὲν θᾶττον ὁτὲ δ’ ὀψιαίτερον καὶ ὅσον εἰς ἥμισυ τῆς ἡμέρας βραχείας προελθούσης.
And when rising, sometimes to need such care as when she approaches a man, and sometimes dryness; and this dryness not to be continuous, but later after waking up to become moist, sometimes more quickly and sometimes later, and even as much as half of a short day having passed.
Ἡ δ’ ὑγρότης ἔστω τοιαύτη οἵα ὅταν πλησιάσῃ τῷ ἀνδρί.
And let the moisture be of such a kind as when she approaches a man.
Πάντα γὰρ ταῦτα σημαίνει δεκτικὴν τὴν ὑστέραν εἶναι τοῦ διδομένου, καὶ προσσπαστικὰς τὰς κοτυληδόνας, καὶ καθεκτικὰς ὧν λαμβάνουσι, καὶ ἀκούσας ἀφιείσας.
For all these things indicate that the uterus is receptive of what is given, and that the cotyledons are attractive, and retentive of what they receive, and not discharging them unwillingly.
Ἔτι φύσας ἐγγίγνεσθαι ἄνευ πάθους, ὥσπερ ἡ κοιλία, καὶ ἀφιέναι, καὶ μεγάλας γινομένας καὶ ἐλάττους αὐτῶν, ἄνευ νόσου· καὶ γὰρ ταῦτ’ ἀποδηλοῖ αὐτάς, ὅτι οὐδὲν στερεώτεραι τοῦ δέοντός εἰσιν, οὔτε κωφαὶ οὔτε φύσει οὔτε νόσῳ, ἀλλὰ δύνανται, ὡς ἂν δέξωνται, αὐξανομένῳ παρέχειν χώραν.
Furthermore, that gases arise without suffering, just as in the belly, and are discharged, and that they become larger and smaller without disease; for this also makes them clear, that they are not at all harder than is necessary, nor numb either by nature or by disease, but are able, when they receive, to provide space for it as it grows.
Ἔχουσι δὲ καὶ διάτασιν.
And they also have extensibility.
Ὅταν δὲ τοῦτο μὴ γίγνηται, ἢ πυκνότεραί εἰσιν ἢ ἀναισθητότεραι ἢ φύσει ἢ νόσῳ.
But when this does not happen, they are either too dense or too insensible, either by nature or by disease.
Διὸ καὶ οὐ δύνανται τρέφειν, ἀλλὰ καὶ διαφθείρουσι τὰ ἔμβρυα, ἐὰν μὲν σφόδρα τοιαῦται ὦσιν, ἔτι μικρὰ ὄντα, ἐὰν δ’ ἧττον, μείζω· ἐὰν δὲ πάνυ ἠρέμα, φαυλότερα ἐκτρέφουσι τὰ ἔκγονα καὶ οἷον ἐν ἀγγείῳ φαύλῳ τραφέντα.
Therefore they are not able to nourish, but even destroy the embryos: if they are extremely so, while they are still small; if less so, when larger; and if very slightly so, they rear inferior offspring, as if nourished in a bad vessel.
Ἔτι δὲ θιγγανομένης τὰ ἐπὶ δεξιὰ καὶ τὰ ἐπ’ ἀριστερὰ ὁμαλὰ αὐτῆς εἶναι, καὶ τἆλλα τούτοις ὁμοίως.
And further, when she is touched, that the right and left sides of it are even, and other parts likewise to these.
Καὶ ἐν τῇ πρὸς τὸν ἄνδρα συνουσίᾳ μεταξὺ ὑγραίνεσθαι, μὴ πολλάκις δὲ μηδὲ σφόδρα.
And in copulation with the man, to become moist in the midst of it, but not often nor excessively.
Ἔστι δὲ τοῦτο τὸ πάθος οἷον ἵδρωμα τοῦ τόπου, ὥσπερ καὶ τῷ στόματι σιάλου πολλαχοῦ μὲν καὶ πρὸς τὴν φορὰν τῶν σιτίων, καὶ ὅταν λαλῶμεν καὶ ἐργαζώμεθα αὐτοὶ πλέον· καὶ τοῖς ὄμμασι δακρύομεν πρὸς τὰ λαμπρότερα ὁρῶντες, καὶ ὑπὸ ψύχους καὶ θερμότητος ἰσχυροτέρας, ἧς κρατεῖ τὰ μόρια ταῦτα, ὅταν τύχῃ ὑγροτέρως ἔχοντα.
And this condition is like a sweating of the place, just as for the mouth saliva occurs in many circumstances, both for the passage of food, and when we talk and work more ourselves; and we weep with our eyes when looking at brighter things, and under cold and stronger heat, by which these parts are mastered when they happen to be in a moister state.
Οὕτω καὶ αἱ ὑστέραι ὑγραίνονται ἐργαζόμεναι, ὅταν τύχωσιν ὑγροτέρας διαθέσεως.
In this way the uterus also becomes moist when working, when they happen to be of a moister disposition.
Πάσχουσι δὲ τοῦτο τὸ πάθος καὶ αἱ μάλιστα καλῶς πεφυκυῖαι.
And even those who are most well-constituted by nature experience this condition.
Διὸ θεραπείας ἀεὶ δέονται αἱ γυναῖκες ἢ πλείονος ἢ ἐλάττονος, ὥσπερ καὶ τὸ στόμα πτύσεως.
Therefore, women always need care, either more or less, just as the mouth needs spitting.
Ἀλλ’ ἐνίαις τοσαύτη ὑγρασία γίνεται, ὥστε μὴ δύνασθαι καθαρὸν τὸ τοῦ ἀνδρὸς ἀνασπάσαι διὰ τὴν σύμμιξιν τῆς
