And hair, feathers, and skins, of horses, cattle, sheep, humans, and all other animals, become both white and grey, reddish, and black, through the same cause: white, indeed, when the moisture, still having its proper color, is dried up during the process of ripening; black, on the contrary, when during their generation the moisture around the skin, just as in all other cases, becomes black because of its abundance, growing old and lasting a long time; for the skin and hides of all such animals become black.
But they have grey, reddish, yellow, and other colors, as many as are dried up before the moisture in them changes completely into the black color.
And in those in which this happens unevenly, the colors also become variegated in like manner.
Therefore, all these also follow the skins and their color; since indeed of red-complexioned humans, the hair also becomes light-reddish, and of black-complexioned ones, black; and if white leprosy breaks out on any part of the body, all have white hair in this place, just as with variegated animals.
Thus all hair and feathers follow the skins, both in part and over the whole body.
Likewise to these are hooves, claws, beaks, and horns; for these also of black animals become black, and of white ones, white, because in all of these also the nourishment is filtered through the skin to the outer region.
And that this is the cause is not difficult to perceive from many things.
For the heads of all children at first become reddish because of the small amount of nourishment.
And this is manifest; for indeed the hair is weak, thin, and short when it first grows on all children.
But as age advances, they turn black again as they become colored because of the abundance of the flowing nourishment.
Likewise also about the pubes and the chin, when they first begin to reach puberty and grow a beard, these also at first become reddish quickly because of the smallness of the moisture being dried up in them, but when more nourishment is carried to the place, they turn black again.
But those on the body remain reddish for the longest time because of the lack of nourishment; since at whatever time they grow, these also happen to turn black in like manner, just as those on the pubes and the head.
And it is manifest; for indeed such of the hairs as have length are for the most part blacker near the body, and yellower near the tips.
And those of sheep, horses, and humans do so, because the least nourishment is carried for them to these places, and they are quickly dried up.
And the feathers of black birds also become blackest of all near the body, but yellower near the tips.
