§62LXII.
LXII. The offices appointed by lot were formerly as follows: some, together with the nine archons, were drawn from the whole tribe, while those drawn in the Theseum were divided among the demes.
But since the demes sold these, they now draw these also from the whole tribe, except for the members of the Council and the guards; these they assign to the demes.
The assemblymen first receive pay: for the other assemblies a drachma, but for the sovereign assembly, nine obols.
Next, the law-courts, three obols.
The Council, five obols; and to those serving as prytaneis, an obol is added for their maintenance.
Next, for maintenance the nine archons receive four obols each, and they maintain a herald and a flute-player. Next, the archon for Salamis receives a drachma a day.
The athletic directors dine in the Prytaneum during the month of Hekatombaion, when the Panathenaia are held, beginning on the fourth of the first decade of the month.
The amphictyons to Delos receive a drachma a day from Delos.
And also whatever magistrates are sent out to Samos, Skyros, Lemnos, or Imbros receive money for their maintenance.
And it is permitted to hold the military offices multiple times, but of the other offices, none, except to serve on the Council twice.
§63LXIII.
LXIII. The nine archons assign the courtrooms by lot by tribes, and the secretary of the thesmothetai for the tenth tribe.
There are ten entrances into the courts, one for each tribe, and twenty allotment machines, two for each tribe, and a hundred boxes, ten for each tribe, and other boxes into which the tokens of the selected jurors are thrown, and two water-jars.
And staffs are placed at each entrance, as many as there are jurors, and bronze acorns are thrown into the water-jar, equal in number to the staffs, and on the acorns are inscribed letters of the alphabet from the eleventh, lambda, as many as the courts that are to be filled.
And those who are over thirty years of age are permitted to judge, as many of them as do not owe money to the public treasury or are not disfranchised.
If anyone judges who is not permitted, he is denounced and brought into the court; and if he is convicted, the jurors assess against him whatever punishment they think he deserves to suffer or pay.
And if he is fined in money, he must be imprisoned until he pays both the previous debt for which he was denounced and whatever additional fine the court assesses against him.
And each juror has a ticket of boxwood, inscribed with his own name, his father's name, his deme, and one letter of the alphabet up to kappa; for the jurors are divided by tribes into ten sections, roughly equal in each letter.
And when the thesmothetes has drawn by lot the letters which are to be assigned to each court, the assistant carries and places on each court the letter drawn.
