§8.88.1τότε δʼ οὖν οἱ δημόται τῆς δημαρχικῆς ἐξουσίας οὐδὲν ἀπολαύοντες ὑφεῖντο τοῦ θράσους καὶ προσιόντες τοῖς ἐπὶ τῆς στρατολογίας τεταγμένοις τὸν ἱερὸν ὅρκον ὤμνυσαν, καὶ ὑπὸ τὰς σημαίας κατεγράφοντο.
At that time, therefore, the plebeians, deriving no benefit from the tribunician power, abated their boldness, and going to those in charge of the levy, took the sacred oath and were enrolled under the standards.
ἐπεὶ δὲ τὸ ἐλλιπὲς τῶν λόχων ἐξεπληρώθη, διεκληρώσαντο τὰς ἡγεμονίας τῶν στρατοπέδων οἱ ὕπατοι· καὶ ὁ μὲν Φάβιος τὴν ἐπὶ τῇ βοηθείᾳ τῶν συμμάχων ἀποσταλεῖσαν δύναμιν παρελάμβανεν, ὁ δὲ Οὐαλέριος τὴν ἐν Οὐολούσκοις στρατοπεδεύουσαν ἄγων τοὺς νεωστὶ καταγραφέντας.
When the deficiency in the centuries was filled, the consuls distributed the commands of the armies by lot; and Fabius took over the force that had been sent to the assistance of the allies, while Valerius, leading the newly enlisted men, took over the one encamped in the country of the Volscians.
§8.88.2μαθοῦσι δὲ τὴν παρουσίαν αὐτοῦ τοῖς πολεμίοις ἐδόκει στρατιάν θʼ ἑτέραν μεταπέμπεσθαι καὶ ἐν ἰσχυροτέρῳ τὸ στρατόπεδον ποιήσασθαι χωρίῳ καὶ μηδὲν ἐκ τοῦ καταφρονεῖν αὐτῶν ἔτι προπετὲς κινδύνευμα ὡς πρότερον ὑπομένειν.
The enemy, having learned of his arrival, resolved to send for another army, to pitch their camp in a stronger position, and to hazard no longer any rash undertaking through contempt of them, as they had done before.
ἐγεγόνει ταῦτα διὰ ταχέων, ἀμφοτέροις τε παρέστη τοῖς ἡγεμόσι τῶν δυνάμεων ὁμοία περὶ τοῦ πολέμου γνώμη, τὰ ἑαυτῶν φυλάττειν ἐρύματα, ἐάν τις ἐπίῃ, τοῖς δὲ τῶν πολεμίων ὡς βίᾳ κρατηθησομένοις μὴ ἐπιχειρεῖν.
These things were done quickly, and a similar plan concerning the war occurred to the commanders of both forces, namely, to guard their own strongholds if anyone should attack, and not to attempt those of the enemy, which would have to be taken by force.
§8.88.3καὶ ὁ διὰ μέσου χρόνος οὐκ ὀλίγος ἐγένετο φόβῳ τῶν ἐπιχειρήσεων τριβόμενος· οὐ μέντοι καὶ εἰς τέλος γε διαμένειν ἐν τοῖς ἐγνωσμένοις ἐδυνήθησαν.
And the intervening time was not short, being spent in fear of attacks; however, they were not able to abide by their resolutions to the end.
ὁπότε γὰρ ἐπισιτισμοῦ χάριν ἢ τῶν ἄλλων ἐπιτηδείων τινός, ὧν ἀμφοτέροις ἔδει, μοῖρά τις ἀποσταλείη τῆς στρατιᾶς, συμβολαί τʼ αὐτῶν ἐγίνοντο καὶ πληγαί, καὶ τὸ νικᾶν οὐκ ἀεὶ παρὰ τοῖς αὐτοῖς ἔμενε· πολλάκις δὲ συμπλεκομένων ἀλλήλοις ἀπέθνησκόν τʼ οὐκ ὀλίγοι καὶ τραυματίαι πλείους ἐγίνοντο.
For whenever any part of the army was sent out for the purpose of foraging or for any other necessary supplies, of which both stood in need, encounters and skirmishes occurred between them, and victory did not always remain with the same side; and as they frequently clashed with one another, not a few died and many more were wounded.
§8.88.4τοῖς μὲν οὖν Ῥωμαίοις τὸ ἀπαναλούμενον τῆς στρατιᾶς οὐδεμία ποθὲν ἐπικουρία ἐξεπλήρου, τὸ δὲ τῶν Οὐολούσκων στρατόπεδον ἄλλων ἐπʼ ἄλλοις ἡκόντων πολλὴν αὔξησιν ἐλάμβανε·
For the Romans, indeed, no assistance from any source filled up what was lost of their army; but the camp of the Volscians, since others arrived after others, received a great increase.
καὶ τούτῳ ἐπαρθέντες οἱ ἡγεμόνες ἐξῆγον ἐκ τοῦ χάρακος τὴν δύναμιν ὡς εἰς μάχην.
Elated by this, their commanders led the force out of the ramparts as if for battle.
