But Marcius did not think it right to object to either of these, but disputed about their order, demanding first to render an account of his deeds during the war, and then, if it should seem good to all the Volscians, to lay down his office.
Of these matters, he thought that not a single city, in which the greater part had been corrupted by Tullus, ought to have authority, but the whole nation assembled in the lawful assembly, to which it was their custom, whenever they were about to deliberate on the most important matters, to send representatives from every city.
But Tullus spoke against this, knowing full well that a man eloquent in speech, rendering an account of many and noble deeds while remaining in his commanding dignity, would persuade the multitude, and so far would he be from undergoing the punishment of traitors, that he would be even more illustrious and highly esteemed by them, and, with everyone consenting, would become master of concluding the war in whatever way he wished.
And for a long time there was a great contest of words and counter-arguments directed against one another, occurring every day in the assemblies and in the marketplace; for in deed it was not possible for either to force the other, being strengthened by the prestige of their equal authority.
But when there was no end to the rivalry, Tullus, having appointed a day on which he ordered Marcius to come to lay down his office and undergo trial for treason, and having incited the boldest men with hopes of rewards to become the leaders of an unholy deed, was present at the designated assembly, and having stepped forward to the tribunal, he made a lengthy accusation against Marcius, and if he should not wish to lay down his office willingly, he urged the people to depose him with all their power.
