When the Romans learned that their danger was dissolved—for the rumor, anticipating the arrival of the women, had preceded them—leaving the city with great joy, they ran outside and met the women, displaying, some in a body, and others individually, salutations and paeans and all those things that men do and say out of joy when they have been restored from great dangers to unexpected good fortune.
That night, then, they spent in festivities and enjoyments, but on the following day, the senate, having been assembled by the consuls, expressed their opinion, regarding Marcius, to postpone to other more suitable times the honors to be given to him; but to the women, they decided that praise for their devotion should be rendered in an ancient public record, which would bring eternal memory to posterity, and that a reward should be given, whichever would be most pleasant and honorable for them to receive; and the people ratified these things.
And it occurred to the women upon consultation to ask for no gift that might cause envy, but to request the senate to permit them to found a temple of Women's Fortune on the spot where they had made their supplications for the city, and to perform sacrifices to her every year, assembling on the day on which they had dissolved the war.
The senate, however, and the people decreed that from public funds a sacred precinct should be purchased and consecrated to the goddess, and in it a temple and an altar should be completed, as the interpreters of sacred matters should direct, and public sacrifices should be offered, with a woman leading the rites, whom they themselves should appoint as the minister of the sacred rites.
When the senate had decreed these things, Valeria, who had first proposed to them the idea concerning the embassy and had persuaded the mother of Marcius to join them in their departure, was then first appointed priestess by the women.
And the women offered the first sacrifice on behalf of the people, with Valeria leading the rites, upon the altar constructed in the precinct, before the temple and the wooden image were erected, in the month of December of the following year, on the new moon, which the Greeks call Neomenia, while the Romans call Kalends; for this was the day that had dissolved the war.
A year later after the first sacrifice, the temple constructed from public funds was completed and dedicated on the seventh day of the month of Quintilis, mostly according to the moon; and this, according to the Romans, is the day preceding the Nones of Quintilis.
And the one who dedicated it was Proculus Virginius, one of the two consuls.
