§6.87.1τοιαῦτα λέγοντος τοῦ Μενηνίου πολλαὶ καὶ ποικίλαι παρʼ ὅλην ἐγίγνοντο τὴν δημηγορίαν ἐκ τῶν παρόντων φωναί.
While Menenius was speaking in this way, many and various voices from those present arose throughout the whole of his speech.
ἐπειδὴ δὲ τελευτῶν τοῦ λόγου πρὸς ὀλοφυρμοὺς ἐτράπετο καὶ τὰς μελλούσας καθέξειν συμφορὰς τούς τε ὑπομένοντας ἐν τῇ πόλει καὶ τοὺς ἀπελαυνομένους καὶ τὰς ἀμφοῖν ἀνεκλαύσατο τύχας, δάκρυά θʼ ἁπάντων ἐξεχεῖτο καὶ μιᾷ βοῇ συμφρονήσαντες ἀνεβόησαν ἀπάγειν σφᾶς εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ μὴ τρίβειν τὸν χρόνον·
But when at the end of his speech he turned to lamentations, and wept over the calamities that were about to overtake both those who remained in the city and those who were being driven out, and the fortunes of both, tears poured from everyone, and with one voice they cried out, having united in sentiment, to lead them back to the city and not to waste time.
ὀλίγου τε πάνυ ἐδέησαν ἀπιέναι διὰ τάχους ἐκ τῆς ἐκκλησίας ἅπαντα τὰ πράγματα τοῖς πρεσβευταῖς ἐπιτρέψαντες καὶ μηδὲν ἄλλο τῶν εἰς ἀσφάλειαν πραγματευσάμενοι, εἰ μὴ παρελθὼν ὁ Βροῦτος ἐπέσχε τὰς ὁρμὰς αὐτῶν τὰ μὲν ἄλλα καλῶς ἔχειν τῷ δήμῳ λέγων, ὅσα ἡ βουλὴ ὑπισχνεῖτο, καὶ πολλὴν αὐτῇ τῶν συγχωρηθέντων χάριν ἔχειν ἀξιῶν· δεδοικέναι μέντοι τὸν ἅπαντα χρόνον φάσκων καὶ τοὺς αὖθίς ποτε τυραννικοὺς ἄνδρας ἐπιχειρήσοντας εἰ τύχοι,
Indeed, they were within a very little of departing in haste from the assembly, having entrusted all affairs to the envoys and having negotiated nothing else for their safety, had not Brutus come forward and restrained their impulses, saying that all other things which the senate promised were well for the people, and urging that they should be very grateful for what had been granted; claiming, however, to fear for all time to come lest ever again tyrannical men should attempt, to bear a grudge against the people for what had happened.
§6.87.2περὶ τῶν γεγονότων τῷ δήμῳ μνησικακεῖν. μίαν δʼ εἶναι πᾶσι τοῖς δεδοικόσι τοὺς κρείττονας μόνην ἀσφάλειαν ταύτην, εἰ γένοιτο αὐτοῖς φανερόν, ὅτι τοῖς βουλομένοις αὐτοὺς ἀδικεῖν οὐχ ὑπάρχει δύναμις· ἕως δʼ ἂν παρῇ τὸ δύνασθαι τὰ πονηρὰ δρᾶν, οὐκ ἐλλείψειν τοῖς πονηροῖς τὸ βούλεσθαι.
And he said that there was only this one safety for all who fear those stronger than themselves, if it should become manifest to them that those wishing to wrong them do not possess the power; for as long as the ability to do evil is present, the desire will not be lacking to the wicked.
ταύτης οὖν εἰ τύχοιεν τῆς ἀσφαλείας, οὐθὲν αὐτοῖς ἔτι δεήσειν.
If therefore they should obtain this safety, they would have no further need of anything.
§6.87.3ὑποτυχόντος δὲ τοῦ Μενηνίου καὶ κελεύσαντος λέγειν τὴν ἀσφάλειαν, ἧς ἔτι τὸν δῆμον οἴεται δεῖσθαι, συγχωρήσατε, φησίν, ἡμῖν ἄρχοντας ἀποδεικνύναι καθʼ ἕκαστον ἐνιαυτὸν ἐξ ἡμῶν ὁσουσδήτινας, οἵτινες ἄλλου μὲν οὐδενὸς ἔσονται κύριοι, τοῖς δʼ ἀδικουμένοις ἢ κατισχυομένοις τῶν δημοτῶν βοηθήσουσι καὶ οὐ περιόψονται τῶν δικαίων ἀποστερούμενον οὐθένα·
When Menenius interrupted and bade him name the safety which he thought the people still needed, he said: "Grant us to appoint from among ourselves each year some number of magistrates, whoever they may be, who shall be masters of nothing else, but shall help those of the citizens who are wronged or oppressed, and shall not allow anyone to be deprived of his rights.
τοῦτο ὑμᾶς ἀντιβολοῦμεν καὶ δεόμεθα πρὸς τοῖς ἄλλοις οἷς δεδώκατε, εἰ μὴ λόγος, ἀλλʼ ἔργον εἰσὶν αἱ διαλλαγαί, δοῦναι καὶ χαρίσασθαι.
This we entreat and beg of you, in addition to the other things you have granted, if the reconciliation is not a matter of words but of deeds, to grant and bestow upon us."
