§6.84.1αἱ δὲ βεβαιώσουσαι τὰς ὁμολογίας ταύτας καὶ τὸ ἀσφαλὲς ὑμῖν παρέξουσαι πίστεις ἔσονται πᾶσαι νόμιμοί τε καὶ ἐν ἔθει τοῖς διαλυομένοις τὰς ἔχθρας.
And the pledges that will confirm these agreements and provide security to you will all be lawful and customary for those who dissolve their enmities.
ἐπιψηφιεῖται μὲν ἡ βουλὴ ταῦτα καὶ νόμου τάξιν ἀποδώσει τοῖς γραφησομένοις· μᾶλλον δʼ ὑφʼ ὑμῶν ἐνθάδε γραφέσθω τὰ δόξαντα, καὶ ἡ βουλὴ τούτοις πείσεται.
The senate will pass a vote on these matters and will give the force of law to what is written; or rather, let what has been decided be written down here by you, and the senate will comply with these things.
§6.84.2τοῦ δὲ μενεῖν βέβαια τὰ συγχωρούμενα νῦν, καὶ μηδὲν ὕστερον ἐναντίον αὐτοῖς ὑπὸ τῆς βουλῆς ἐξενεχθήσεσθαι, πρῶτον μὲν ἡμεῖς οἱ πρέσβεις ἀνάδοχοι, διδόντες ὑμῖν σώματα καὶ ψυχὰς καὶ γενεὰς τὰς ἑαυτῶν ἐνέχυρα· ἔπειτα οἱ ἄλλοι βουλευταί, ὅσοι τῷ ψηφίσματι συνεγγραφήσονται· οὐ γὰρ δή ποτε ἀκόντων ἡμῶν γραφήσεταί τι κατὰ τοῦ δήμου.
And to ensure that the things now conceded remain secure, and that nothing contrary to them will later be brought forward by the senate, we the envoys are in the first place guarantors, offering our own bodies, souls, and offspring as pledges to you; and next, all the other senators who will sign the decree with us; for surely nothing will ever be written against the people against our will.
οἱ γὰρ ἡγούμενοι τοῦ συνεδρίου καὶ πρῶτοι τὰς αὑτῶν γνώμας ἀποφαινόμενοι τῶν ἄλλων ἡμεῖς ἐσμεν.
For we are the leaders of the senate and the first to declare our opinions before the others.
§6.84.3τελευταία δὲ πίστις ἅπασίν ἐστιν ἀνθρώποις Ἕλλησί τε καὶ βαρβάροις, ἣν οὐδεὶς πώποτε ἀναιρήσει χρόνος, ἡ διʼ ὅρκων καὶ σπονδῶν ἐγγυητὰς θεοὺς ποιουμένη τῶν συμβάσεων· ὑφʼ ἧς πολλαὶ μὲν ἰδιωτῶν ἔχθραι πικραί, πολλοὶ δὲ πόλεμοι πόλεσι πρὸς πόλεις συστάντες διηλλάγησαν.
And the final pledge for all mankind, both Greeks and barbarians, which no time will ever destroy, is that which through oaths and treaty-libations makes gods the guarantors of agreements; by which many bitter enmities of private individuals, and many wars undertaken by cities against cities, have been reconciled.
καὶ ταύτην εἴ τινα λαμβάνετε τὴν πίστιν, εἴτʼ ὀλίγοις ἐπιτρέπετε τοῖς ἡγεμόσι τοῦ συνεδρίου περὶ ὅλης ὑμῖν δοῦναι τῆς βουλῆς τοὺς ὅρκους, εἴτε πάντας ἀξιοῦτε τοὺς ἐπιγραφομένους τοῖς δόγμασιν ὀμνύειν καθʼ ἱερῶν ἦ μὴν βέβαια τὰ συγκείμενα φυλάξειν. §6.84.4δεξιὰς δὲ καὶ σπονδὰς καὶ πίστεις ἐπὶ θεῶν γιγνομένας μήτε σὺ διάβαλλε, Βροῦτε, μήτʼ ἀναίρει τὸ κάλλιστον ἐπιτήδευμα τῶν ἀνθρωπίνων, μηδʼ ὑμεῖς ἀνάσχησθε αὐτοῦ λέγοντος ἀνοσίων καὶ τυραννικῶν ἀνθρώπων πονηρεύματα, ἃ τῆς Ῥωμαίων ἀρετῆς πολὺ ἀπέχει.
And if you receive any such pledge, whether you permit a few leaders of the senate to take the oaths to you on behalf of the whole senate, or whether you require all those who sign the decrees to swear over the victims that they will surely keep the agreements, neither do you, Brutus, slander the handshakes, libations, and pledges made in the presence of the gods, nor abolish the most beautiful practice of human affairs; nor should you tolerate him when he calls these things the knaveries of unholy and tyrannical men, which are far removed from Roman virtue.
