§6.67.1ταῦτʼ εἰπόντες διέλυσαν τὸν σύλλογον·
Having said this, they dismissed the assembly.
ταῖς δʼ ἑξῆς ἡμέραις παραγγεῖλαι κελεύσαντες ἅπασι τοῖς κατὰ τοὺς ἀγροὺς καὶ τὰ φρούρια παρεῖναι καὶ τῇ βουλῇ προαγορεύσαντες ἥκειν εἰς τὴν αὐτὴν ἡμέραν, ἐπειδὴ κατέμαθον ὄχλου μεστὴν οὖσαν τὴν πόλιν καὶ τὰς γνώμας τῶν πατρικίων ἐξηττωμένας τῶν δεήσεων, ἃς ἐποιοῦντο σὺν οἰμωγῇ καὶ ὀδυρμῷ πατέρες τε καὶ παιδία νήπια τῶν ἀποστατῶν, τῇ κυρίᾳ τῶν ἡμερῶν ἐξῄεσαν ἐπὶ τὴν ἀγορὰν στενοχωρουμένην ἐκ §6.67.2πολλῆς ἔτι νυκτὸς ἅπασαν ὄχλῳ παντοδαπῷ.
And having ordered a proclamation to be made during the following days to all those in the fields and garrisons to be present, and having previously warned the senate to meet on the same day, when they perceived that the city was full of a crowd and that the resolution of the patricians was yielding to the entreaties which the fathers and infant children of the seceders were making with wailing and lamentation, on the appointed day they went out to the forum, which was crowded from still deep in the night all over with a multitude of every sort.
καὶ παρελθόντες ἐπὶ τὸ ἱερὸν τοῦ Ἡφαίστου, ἔνθα ἦν ἔθος αὐτοῖς τὰς ἐκκλησίας ἐπιτελεῖν, πρῶτον μὲν ἐπῄνεσαν τὸν δῆμον ἐπὶ τῇ σπουδῇ καὶ προθυμίᾳ τῆς κατὰ πλῆθος ἀφίξεως· ἔπειτα παρεκάλεσαν ἐκδέχεσθαι μεθʼ ἡσυχίας, ἕως ἂν γένηται τὸ προβούλευμα τῆς βουλῆς· τοῖς δʼ οἰκείοις τῶν ἀποστατῶν ἀγαθὰς παρῄνουν ἐλπίδας ἔχειν, ὡς οὐ διὰ μακροῦ κομιουμένοις τὰ φίλτατα, καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο παρελθόντες εἰς τὸ συνέδριον αὐτοί τε διελέχθησαν ἐπιεικεῖς καὶ μετρίους λόγους, καὶ τοὺς ἄλλους ἠξίουν χρηστὰς καὶ φιλανθρώπους ἀποδείκνυσθαι γνώμας.
And having advanced to the temple of Hephaestus, where it was their custom to hold the assemblies, first they praised the people for their zeal and eagerness in coming in such numbers; then they exhorted them to wait quietly until the preliminary decree of the senate should be made; and they advised the relations of the seceders to have good hopes, as they would before long recover those dearest to them; and after this, having entered the senate-house, they themselves both spoke mild and moderate words, and urged the others to declare good and benevolent opinions.
πρῶτον δὲ τῶν ἄλλων ἐκάλουν τὸν Μενήνιον· ὃς ἀναστὰς τοῖς αὐτοῖς ἐχρήσατο λόγοις οἷς καὶ πρότερον ἐπὶ τὰς διαλλαγὰς τὴν βουλὴν παρακαλῶν καὶ γνώμην ἀπεφήνατο τὴν αὐτὴν ἀξιῶν πρεσβείαν ἀποστέλλειν πρὸς τοὺς ἀφεστηκότας διὰ ταχέων αὐτοκράτορα τῶν διαλλαγῶν.
And first of all, they called upon Menenius; who, rising, used the same words with which he had previously urged the senate to reconciliation, and declared the same opinion, demanding that they should send an embassy with full powers for reconciliation to the seceders without delay.
