§6.44.1εἰ μὲν οὖν ὁ δῆμος εὖ προπαθὼν ἐξέλιπε τὰς διʼ ἐμοῦ τῇ βουλῇ γενομένας ὑποσχέσεις, ἐκεῖνά μοι ἀπολογητέα ἦν, ὅτι ἐψεύσασθε ὑμεῖς, ἐν ἐμοὶ δʼ οὐδὲν κακούργημα ἦν·
If, therefore, the people, having previously received benefits, had failed to perform the promises made through me to the senate, I should have had to defend myself on those grounds, namely, that you had lied and that there was no wrongdoing in me.
ἐπεὶ δὲ τὰ παρὰ τῆς βουλῆς ὁμολογηθέντα οὐ γέγονεν ὑμῖν ἐπιτελῆ, πρὸς τὸν δῆμον ὁ λόγος ἤδη ἀναγκαῖος γίγνεταί μοι, ὅτι οὐκ ἐμοὶ συνδοκοῦντα πεπόνθατε, ἀλλʼ ὁμοίως πεφενακίσμεθα καὶ παραλελογίσμεθα ἀμφότεροι, καὶ μᾶλλον ὑμῶν ἐγώ, ὅς γε οὐχ ἃ κοινῇ ἠπάτημαι μετὰ πάντων μόνον ἀδικοῦμαι, ἀλλὰ καὶ ὅσα ἰδίᾳ κακῶς ἀκήκοα, ὡς δὴ τά τε παρὰ τῶν πολεμίων ἁλόντα οὐ μετὰ κοινῆς γνώμης τοῦ συνεδρίου τοῖς ἀπόροις ὑμῶν βουλόμενος ἰδίαν ὠφέλειαν περιποιήσασθαι παρασχὼν καὶ τὰς τῶν πολιτῶν οὐσίας δημεύειν ἀξιῶν ἐκείνης γε κωλυούσης καὶ μὴ παρανομεῖν, στρατιάς τʼ ἐναντιουμένων τῶν βουλευτῶν ἀφεικώς, δέον ὑπὸ ταῖς ἀγραυλίαις καὶ πλάναις §6.44.2ἐν τῇ πολεμίᾳ κατέχειν ὑμᾶς.
But since the agreements made on the part of the senate have not been fulfilled for you, my speech now becomes necessary before the people, to show that you have suffered what did not seem good to me, but we both have been equally deceived and cheated, and I even more than you, since I am wronged not only in what I have been deceived in common with everyone, but also in all the slanders I have personally heard—as if, forsooth, I had granted the spoils taken from the enemy to your needy without the common consent of the council, wishing to procure a private advantage for them, and had demanded the confiscation of the citizens' properties, though the senate forbade it and urged me not to break the laws, and had disbanded the army while the senators opposed it, whereas I ought, under bivouacs and wanderings, to have kept you in the enemy's country.
ὠνείδισται δέ μοι καὶ ἡ τῶν κληρούχων εἰς Οὐολούσκους ἐκπομπή, ὅτι γῆν πολλὴν καὶ ἀγαθὴν οὐ τοῖς πατρικίοις οὐδὲ τοῖς ἱππεῦσιν ἐχαρισάμην, ἀλλὰ τοῖς ἀπόροις ὑμῶν διένειμα· καὶ ὃ μάλιστά μοι τὴν πλείστην ἀγανάκτησιν παρέσχεν, ὅτι πλείους ἢ τετρακόσιοι ἄνδρες ἐκ τοῦ δήμου τοῖς ἱππεῦσι προσκατελέγησαν ἐπὶ τῆς στρατολογίας βίων εὐπορήσαντες.
I am also reproached for the sending of the colonists to the Volscians, on the ground that I did not grant much good land to the patricians nor to the knights, but distributed it to your needy; and what caused me the greatest indignation was that more than four hundred men from the people were enrolled among the knights at the levy, having acquired sufficient means.
§6.44.3εἰ μὲν οὖν ἀκμάζοντί μοι τὸ σῶμα ταῦτα προσέπεσε, δῆλον ἂν ἔργῳ ἐποίησα τοῖς ἐχθροῖς, οἷον ὄντα με ἄνδρα προὐπηλάκισαν·
If, therefore, these things had fallen upon me when my body was in its prime, I would have made it clear in deed to my enemies what kind of man they had insulted.
ἐπειδὴ δʼ ὑπὲρ ἑβδομήκοντα ἔτη γέγονα καὶ οὐ δυνατὸς ἔτι ἀμύνειν ἑαυτῷ εἰμι ὁρῶ τε, ὅτι οὐκ ἂν ἔτι ὑπʼ ἐμοῦ παύσαιτο ἡ στάσις ὑμῶν, ἀποτίθεμαι τὴν ἀρχὴν καὶ ἐπὶ τοῖς βουλομένοις τὸ σῶμα ἐμαυτοῦ ποιῶ, εἴ τι οἴονται ὑπʼ ἐμοῦ ἐξηπατῆσθαι, χρήσασθαί μοι ὅτι ἂν δικαιῶσι.
But since I have become over seventy years old and am no longer able to defend myself, and I see that your sedition can no longer be stopped by me, I resign my office and place my person at the disposal of those who wish, so that if they think they have been deceived by me in any way, they may treat me as they think just.
